Book Time and Eternity in Jewish Mysticism

Download or read book Time and Eternity in Jewish Mysticism written by Brian Ogren and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time and eternity are concepts that have occupied an important place within Jewish mystical thought. This present volume gives pride of place to these concepts, and is one of the first works to bring together diverse voices on the subject. It offers a multivalent picture of the topic of time and eternity, not only by including contributions from an array of academics who are leaders in their fields, but by proposing six diverse approaches to time and eternity in Jewish mysticism: the theoretical approach to temporality, philosophical definitions, the idea of time and pre-existence, the idea of historical time, the idea of experiential time, and finally, the idea of eternity beyond time. This multivocal treatment of Jewish mysticism and time as based on variant academic approaches is novel, and it should lay the groundwork for further discussion and exploration.

Book excerpt: The heart is where the human soul and God meet. This is what teachings from Scripture and the mystics reveal: the heart is the temple of God within us and within the heart we hold the key to live a truly divine life. But how do we embody the tremendous love available to us, deep in our hearts? In Eternal Heart, Carl McColman, author of The Big Book of Christian Mysticism, invites us to create an optimistic, visionary, and imaginative path to personal happiness and fulfillment. Weaving together teachings from the biblical tradition, literature of the mystics, and wisdom of the world's contemplative traditions, McColman engages us in profound, practical exercises for cultivating fuller, more abundant, and more satisfying lives. The path of Christian Mysticism is a path of both contemplation and action. By unlocking the mysteries in our hearts, we discover a source of divine love deep within us: a power for spiritual growth, and for creating meaningful relationships and working together to change the world for the better.

Book Whispers Beyond the Edge Glimpses of the Beloved

Download or read book Whispers Beyond the Edge Glimpses of the Beloved written by Royal L. Craig and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SPIRITUAL FEAST! Even as the moth is drawn to self-immolation in the brightness of the candle's flame, so is the spirit of the mystic drawn to self-immolation as it soars to the Sun of its own being. The earth ceases to exist and the heavens grow ever brighter. Words are tattered beyond repair and the spirit becomes one with the living Flame of Love. Such is the ecstasy and the passion as the mystic reaches ever deeper into the mysterious Source of all. Once triumphant in the journey, the realized souls moved by compassion, return to assist others in the upward path. Individually commissioned as the need arises, they come into the prison of this world as ambassadors of Truth. All of us are mystics, but man is an unrealized mystic due to preoccupation with the gifts of this world and his blind ignorance of the Divine Giver. We have become saturated with the world, but the true goal of life is to become saturated with the Divine and return to that home we left so long ago. Royal has been a student at a number of schools of esoteric and mystical teachings in Canada, America, Europe, and the Far East. He states, "Reading these writings of mine are like dipping your toe at the water's edge along the shore of the Ocean of Love for one brief moment; may you be brave enough to dive to the depths." Book Zen and the Unspeakable God

Download or read book Zen and the Unspeakable God written by Jason N. Blum and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen and the Unspeakable God reevaluates how we study mystical experience. Forsaking the prescriptive epistemological box that has constrained the conversation for decades, ensuring that methodology has overshadowed subject matter, Jason Blum proposes a new interpretive approach—one that begins with a mystic’s own beliefs about the nature of mystical experience. Blum brings this approach to bear on the experiential accounts of three mystical exemplars: Meister Eckhart, Ibn al-ʿArabi, and Hui-neng. Through close readings of their texts, he uncovers the mystics’ own fundamental assumptions about transcendence and harnesses these as interpretive guides to their experiences. The predominant theory-first path to interpretation has led to the misunderstanding and misrepresentation of individual mystical experiences and fostered specious conclusions about cross-cultural comparability among them. Blum’s hermeneutic invites the scholarly community to begin thinking about mystical experience in a new way—through the mystics’ eyes. Zen and the Unspeakable God offers a sampling of the provocative results of this technique and an explanation of its implications for theories of consciousness and our contemporary understanding of the nature of mystical experience.

Book The Mysticism of Saint Augustine

Download or read book The Mysticism of Saint Augustine written by John Peter Kenney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-09-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's vision at Ostia is one of the most influential accounts of mystical experience in the Western tradition, and a subject of persistent interest to Christians, philosophers and historians. This book explores Augustine's account of his experience as set down in the Confessions and considers his mysticism in relation to his classical Platonist philosophy. John Peter Kenney argues that while the Christian contemplative mysticism created by Augustine is in many ways founded on Platonic thought, Platonism ultimately fails Augustine in that it cannot retain the truths that it anticipates. The Confessions offer a response to this impasse by generating two critical ideas in medieval and modern religious thought: firstly, the conception of contemplation as a purely epistemic event, in contrast to classical Platonism; secondly, the tenet that salvation is absolutely distinct from enlightenment.

Book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism

Download or read book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism written by Carl McColman and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular usage, "mysticism" typically refers to New Age or Eastern forms of spirituality. However, the mystical tradition is also an important component of the Christian tradition. At its heart--and much like its expression in other faith traditions--Christian mysticism is an ancient practice that incorporates meditation, contemplation, worship, philosophy, the quest for personal enlightenment, and the experience of Divine presence. This volume is a comprehensive introduction and guide to Christian mysticism. It is a big book about a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, blissful, experiential unison with God. Among the topics covered here are a general introduction to mysticism, the Bible and mysticism, the history and types of Christian mysticism, biographical sketches of leading Christian mystics, and practical instructions about practicing mysticism today. This is a breathtaking work that explores a form of spirituality that has changed lives over the course of 2,000 years. Learning about Christian mysticism and how it has been articulated through the centuries will prove inspirational for today's seekers, regardless of the faith tradition. "The mystic is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of mytic." --William McNamara

Book Language Mysticism

Download or read book Language Mysticism written by Shira Wolosky and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Mysticism explores the place granted to language within metaphysical and theological hierarchies traditional to Western culture. Within these hierarchies, language represents embodiment, division, and historical differentiation; whereas silence points to an eternal unity beyond linguistic form and limitation. But this reflects a deeply embedded ambivalence in the Western tradition toward material and temporal conditions in general. The author uses the writings of T. S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett, and Paul Celan to show how far-reaching and immediate this history of ambivalence remains in its influence and consequences. In each of these writers, theological traditions inform and situate linguistic imagery and practices, albeit in quite different ways. The author argues that the stances toward language of these three writers register values not only fundamental to their work but general to our culture. Language is the sign of body, of history, of difference; and a negative attitude toward language therefore implies a displacement of value away from concrete, historical condition. The approach to language of Eliot, Beckett, and Celan therefore inscribes their struggle to define and locate the values that endow our lives with meaning, and the possibility of translating these values into historical reality.

Book Practical Mysticism A Little Book for Normal People and Abba Meditations Based on the Lord s Prayer

Download or read book Practical Mysticism A Little Book for Normal People and Abba Meditations Based on the Lord s Prayer written by Evelyn Underhill and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2003-08-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two classics in one volume that show a British poet and mystic to be one of the most authoritative modern voices on mysticism. "God gives without stint all that the creature needs, but it must do its part. He gives the wheat: we must reap and grind and bake it." –Evelyn Underhill Written on the eve of World War I, Practical Mysticism reviews the works of the greatest Western mystics, including Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, and Thomas à Kempis. Underhill’s goal is to guide her readers on a journey toward mystical consciousness, to teach them to see the “eternal beauty beyond and beneath apparent ruthlessness.” Abba, first published in 1940, takes as its starting point the seven phrases of the Lord’s Prayer, using them as a means to propel the self toward union with God. In these important works, Underhill brings an often esoteric subject onto a practical footing, showing that the profound gifts of mysticism are not only for the few but are within reach of us all.
