Book excerpt: The food on our plates has always been inextricably linked to the agricultural cycle. The numerous festivals and rituals that crop up on the Odia calendar (or Panji) with unfailing regularity, inevitably extend clues to eat what’s best in the season. This book takes one through the never-ending cycle of pray, eat and repeat while delving into the intricacies of the interrelationships between the agrarian calendar, the festivals observed in the various parts of the state of Odisha and the changing seasons. Beyond Dalma attempts to focus on the similarities rather than the diversities of the Odia cuisine which itself is an interesting amalgamation of various micro-cuisines that have evolved independently, shaped by diverse stimuli for the better part of history. At the same time, one cannot discount that dynamic exchanges among various micro-culinary traditions have always occurred due to a multitude of reasons ranging from trade to migrations to even marriages. The resulting culinary legacy is one that can be best described as a curious interplay between heterogeneity and homogeneity. The recipes are carefully selected keeping the focus on the seasonal aspects of the cuisine rather than emphasizing the regional aspects. However, a mild proclivity towards Western Odisha may be discernible at times as the author has spent a substantial part of her life in that region. The recipes are curated based on local and seasonal produce, and designed to help one adhere to a sustainable, low-carbon footprint lifestyle that is harmoniously aligned with mother nature’s basket rather than the supermarket shelves.

Book excerpt: Indian Shield: Precambrian Evolution and Phanerozoic Reconstitution highlights unique evolutionary trends covering a period of over 3,500 million years, from the oldest crust to the most recent geological activity of the Indian Subcontinent. The book discusses regional terrain geology in terms of the evolutionary history of the crust, describing how the Precambrian Shield evolved from a stable continental region to a tectonically unstable zone marked by frequent high-intensity earthquakes in a Plate-interior setting. It is a complete and readable account of the history of growth and evolution of the Indian Subcontinent, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and teachers in the geosciences, especially geophysics, geomorphology and geology. The book also serves as an important resource for tectonics and petrology researchers, as well as those involved in exploration of mineral resources. Features comprehensive geological information on the evolution of the Indian Subcontinent, from the growth of early crust to the present day in a single volume Discusses different processes of post-Precambrian reconstitution of the Indian Shield that ultimately produced the present-day geomorphology as well as the tectonic character of the region Assesses the impacts and effects of the ongoing post-Himalayan tectonism on the Indian Subcontinent

Psychologist Abby Cohen is still reeling from the loss of her beloved daughter when another young girl arrives in her life—twelve-year-old Miranda, who appears at Abby's hospital mute, terrified, and completely alone. As she struggles to connect with this deeply disturbed child and unravel the mystery of her past, Abby must grapple with her own frozen self. Numbed by grief and on the verge of losing her relationship with both her husband and little boy, Abby finds herself tempted to leave behind what remains of the family she once cherished. But something about Miranda and the bond that has begun to form between them awakens Abby's capacity to feel and reminds her of the power—and the limits—of love. “A beautifully-written, deeply moving novel about loss, love, and redemption.”—Jessica Barksdale Inclan

Book Beyond the Unconscious

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark S. Micale
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2014-07-14
  • ISBN : 1400863422
  • Pages : 429 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Unconscious written by Mark S. Micale and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri F. Ellenberger, the Swiss medical historian, is best remembered today as the author of The Discovery of the Unconscious (1970), a brilliant, encyclopedic study of psychiatric theory and therapy from primitive times to the mid-twentieth century. However, in addition to this well-known work, Ellenberger has written over thirty essays in the history of the mental sciences. This collection unites fourteen of Ellenberger's most interesting and methodologically innovative historical essays, many of which draw on new and rich bodies of primary materials. Several of the articles appear here in English translation for the first time. The essays deal with subjects such as the intellectual origins of psycho-analysis, the work of the French psychological school of Jean-Martin Charcot and Pierre Janet, the role of the "great patients" in the history of psychiatry, and the cultural history of psychiatry. The publication of these writings, which corresponds with the opening in Paris of the Institut Henri Ellenberger, truly establishes Ellenberger as the founding figure of the historiography of psychiatry. Accompanying the essays are an extensive interpretive introduction and a detailed bibliographical essay by the editor. Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book The Council of Trent Reform and Controversy in Europe and Beyond 1545 1700

Download or read book The Council of Trent Reform and Controversy in Europe and Beyond 1545 1700 written by Wim François and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exactly 450 years after the solemn closure of the Council of Trent on 4 December 1563, scholars from diverse regional, disciplinary and confessional backgrounds convened in Leuven to reflect upon the impact of this Council, not only in Europe but also beyond. Their conclusions are to be found in these three impressive volumes. Bridging different generations of scholarship, the authors reassess in a first volume Tridentine views on the Bible, theology and liturgy, as well as their reception by Protestants, deconstructing many myths surviving in scholarship and society alike. They also deal with the mechanisms 'Rome' developed to hold a grip on the Council's implementation. The second volume analyzes the changes in local ecclesiastical life, initiated by bishops, orders and congregations, and the political strife and confessionalisation accompanying this reform process. The third and final volume examines the afterlife of Trent in arts and music, as well as in the global impact of Trent through missions.
