Book Beyond Business as Usual

Download or read book Beyond Business as Usual written by Michael Munn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wherever we are in the quality movement, there is more to discover--to explore. Today, quality serves business as a way of increasing profits. That is one end of a spectrum. Tomorrow, quality takes business into the rest of the spectrum. In this new dimension, business learns to serve, and be served, from a foundation of unconditional love. At the other end of the spectrum is quality's far-reaching goal--the attainment of harmony between people and the entire cosmos. This goal reveals the gap, and steps, between it and what we do today. This book is intended for explorers and pioneers. It is not for those who are comfortable in today's paradigms. It is for those who search and yearn for new ways bring heart into the world of business and society. It is not for those who are comfortable living an unexamined and changeless life. It is for those who sense a thrill in the heart with the changes of each new day. Experience, not dry learning, is the heart of this book. For this reason, "Practical Exercises" are included in most of the chapters. They are experiences of things that can be known, but not told or taught. Without the exercises, your knowing will be superficial. With them, you can enter into dimensions unknown to you today. Michael W. Munn, Ph.D., heads the Gaia Center for Quality in Palo Alto, California. He provides keynotes, experiential change seminars, and business quality workshops. Strategic planning, executive development, proposal, and reengineering efforts are among the topics of his workshops.

Book Beyond the Triple Bottom Line

Download or read book Beyond the Triple Bottom Line written by Francisco Szekely and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pragmatic new business model for sustainability that outlines eight steps that range from exploring a mission to promoting innovation; with case studies. Many recent books make the case for businesses to become more sustainable, but few explain the specifics. In this book, Francisco Szekely and Zahir Dossa offer a pragmatic new business model for sustainability that extends beyond the traditional framework of the triple bottom line, describing eight steps that range from exploring a vision and establishing a strategy to implementing the strategy and promoting innovation. Szekely and Dossa argue that businesses and organizations need to move away from the business case for sustainability toward a sustainable business model. That is, businesses should go beyond the usual short-term focus on minimizing harm while maximizing profits. Instead, businesses on the path to sustainability should, from the start, focus on addressing a societal need and view profitability not as an end but as a means to support the sustainable organization. Szekely and Dossa explore key problems organizations face when pursuing a sustainability agenda. Each chapter presents one of the eight steps, describes a business dilemma for sustainability, provides a theoretically grounded strategic framework, offers case studies that illustrate the dilemma, and summarizes key findings; the case studies draw on the experiences of such companies as Tesla Motors, Patagonia, TOMs, and Panera. The book emphasizes leadership, arguing that leaders who question the status quo, inspire others, and take risks are essential for achieving sustainable business practices.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the findings of the ARC discovery project, Reconfiguring the enterprise: shifting manufacturing culture in Australia (DP # DP160101674). Research conducted between 2016 and 2019 collected data from 10 manufacturing enterprises, across diverse sectors, scales and organisational forms through in-depth interviews, site visits and workshops. The project's main finding is that there is a culture of manufacturing that is beyond business as usual in Australia. This report counters ill-founded fears that manufacturing in Australia is dead by presenting convincing evidence of dynamic companies that are committed to just and sustainable manufacturing practices. It demonstrates how there is a viable future for manufacturing in Australia in the 21st century that is being shaped by a culture that is beyond business as usual. Through the case examples we uncovered how this new manufacturing culture: a) maintains firm viability and thereby safeguards manufacturing in Australia; b) provides decent jobs in an inclusive society and thereby builds a more just manufacturing sector; and c) produces with a smaller ecological footprint and thereby builds a more environmentally sustainable manufacturing sector. These economic, social and ecological goods are realised in these firms through practical commitments expressed in the daily enterprise operations and over time. The findings are significant for Australia. Manufacturing supports 1.27 million jobs in Australia. It plays a major role in the social inclusion, nurturing the productive capacity of people from many different backgrounds and experiences. It is a point of concentration for innovation and investment in R&D.However, the current business as usual model is no longer viable. Growth without regard for a social licence to produce is no longer acceptable. Nor is growth with disregard for the environmental impacts of production and consumption. The new culture of manufacturing rewrites the social licence for enterprises. It is building viable firms with the capacity to withstand threats that might undermine the sector. At the same time, their ongoing commitments and practices are helping Australia address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

Book A Left Green New Deal

Download or read book A Left Green New Deal written by Becker Riexinger and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a successful socialist Green New Deal look like? With the cascading effects of multiple ongoing health and economic crises, conditions are ripe for the emergence of a global progressive social project capable of moving us beyond business-as-usual and eradicating the fundamental causes of misery: namely, a global Green New Deal. But simply creating new "green jobs" within the current capitalist system is not nearly enough. If we are to take on climate change, it is imperative that we first of all engage in “system change,” a process rooted in socialism. Shifting beyond the American notion of the Green New Deal and adding vital internationalist dimension, A Left Green New Deal provides just such a blueprint for this worldwide undertaking. Written by Bernd Riexinger and his team in the German DIE LINKE [the left] Party, A Left Green New Deal unveils the powerful opponents of a genuine, left-wing Green New Deal—corporations, the wealthy, the ultra-rich and their political allies. But it also discloses the creation of a potent new counterforce, embodied in a left-wing mobilization strategy developed by DIE LINKE. This organizing model is based in "connective party politics"— transformative organizing practices that reach across class lines within and beyond the party. This essential book provides both a Left Green New Deal platform and the inspiration necessary to lay a path towards an alternate future.

In Disrupt-It-Yourself, bestselling author and innovation expert Simone Ahuja guides readers through the DIY (Disrupt-It-Yourself) system that will sustain innovation and retain DIYers, the employees—or intrapreneurs—most committed to solving the problems of the future, even if it means moving far beyond “business as usual.” Based on her experience working with Fortune 500 companies and extensive research, Ahuja identifies the intrapreneurial archetype and presents eight new principles to foster a DIY mindset and action plan. In a clear, concise style with expert advice and real-world examples, this book provides a new lens to help companies become faster and more fluid, offers easy options to tailor the system to each company’s unique circumstances, and presents strategic lessons—from Keep It Frugal to Make It Permission-less—that open up the full spectrum of innovation and make it sustainable. Using the DIY approach, organizations can build their ability to innovate and create an approach for growth that harnesses the creativity and knowledge of employees at every level.

Book From Falling Behind to Catching Up

Download or read book From Falling Behind to Catching Up written by Richard Record and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite decades of development efforts supported by significant amounts of foreign aid, Malawi has experienced weak and volatile economic growth performance over a sustained period of time. Malawi’s growth remains an outlier even compared to its geographically and demographically similar peers. Moreover, growth has been distributed unequally, with little impact on poverty. Per capita income has improved only minimally in the 50 years since independence, and Malawi now has one of the lowest per capita incomes in the world. From Falling Behind to Catching Up aims to improve readers’ understanding of the puzzle of Malawi’s development performance and identify ways for the country to achieve robust growth and stay on a stable growth path that helps the poor. The book places a strong emphasis on assessing Malawi’s growth experience since independence from a comparative international perspective. It seeks to benchmark Malawian outcomes on growth, structural change, and transformation against peers and explores possible reasons for divergence from international trends. The book also puts deeper drivers of economic growth at the center of the discussion, looking in particular at the institutions and policies that may have affected Malawi’s growth outcomes and ones that could help Malawi avoid macroeconomic instability in the future. This book first begins by discussing Malawi’s macroeconomic situation and challenges in fiscal management, reviewing and drawing lessons from the instability, slippages, and shocks Malawi has experienced since independence. Second, given how critical the agricultural sector is to poverty reduction in Malawi, the overview explores the current state of agricultural markets. Third, looking at the factors that may constrain higher growth in the future, challenges in private sector development and job creation are discussed. Finally, building on the analysis of challenges, the book concludes with a summary of policy recommendations aimed at helping Malawi begin catching up with its peers.
