Western-funded hospitals have sprung up, offering surgical sutures that ostensibly allow women who suffer from obstetric fistula to return to their communities in full health. Journalists, NGO staff, celebrities, and some physicians have crafted a stock narrative around this injury, depicting afflicted women as victims of a backward culture who have their fortunes dramatically reversed by Western aid. With Beyond Surgery, medical anthropologist Anita Hannig unsettles this picture for the first time and reveals the complicated truth behind the idea of biomedical intervention as quick-fix salvation. Through her in-depth ethnography of two repair and rehabilitation centers operating in Ethiopia, Hannig takes the reader deep into a world inside hospital walls, where women recount stories of loss and belonging, shame and delight. As she chronicles the lived experiences of fistula patients in clinical treatment, Hannig explores the danger of labeling “culture” the culprit, showing how this common argument ignores the larger problem of insufficient medical access in rural Africa. After three decades of extensive research on those non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by psychedelic drugs and by other means, Grof concludes that our present scientific world view is as inadequate as many of its historical predecessors. In this pioneering work, he proposes a new model of the human psyche that takes account of his findings. Grof includes in his model the recollective level, or the reliving of emotionally relevant memories, a level at which the Freudian framework can be useful. Beyond that is perinatal level in which the human unconscious may be activated to a reliving of biological birth and confrontation with death. How birth experience influences an individual's later development is a central focus of the book. The most serious challenge to contemporary psycho-analytic theory comes from a delineation of the transpersonal level, or the expansion of consciousness beyond the boundaries of time and space. Grof makes a bold argument that understanding of the perinatal and transpersonal levels changes much of how we view both mental illness and mental health. His reinterpretation of some of the most agonizing aspects of human behavior proves thought provoking for both laypersons and professional therapists.

This book describes a more global approach to psychological consultation in the NICU integrating interventions that begin prior to the infant's conception and extend well beyond the NICU hospitalization. Chapter 1 provides a context and review of the medical aspects of the NICU environment and the neurodevelopmental consequences of prematurity. In Chapter 2 reviews the common psychological reactions of mothers of premature infants, including specific risk factors associated with maternal psychological distress. It also discusses the relationship between parental posttraumatic stress and infant outcomes as it relates to such issues as breastfeeding, maternal-infant interaction, attachment, and infant development. Chapter 3 describes the form and prevalence of symptoms of paternal psychological distress and outline a curriculum for a group-based intervention specifically designed to address fathers' concerns. Chapter 4 addresses developmental care interventions that overlap with interventions more narrowly focused on parental psychological distress. Chapters 5 and 6 describe our intervention model in both the individualand group therapy formats. Chapter 7 addresses vulnerable child syndrome, which is associated with adverse developmental outcomes in children as well as overutilization of health care resources. Application of the trauma model to the concept provides a framework to understand how parental behavior is altered in the context of trauma. Finally, Chapter 8 discusses how to implement a psychological intervention program in the NICU that includes screening the parents of premature infants for symptoms of psychological distress"--
