Book excerpt: This study employs several approaches to explore, analyze, and conceptualize the importance of social & organizational factors in agriculturally-based diversification. The first approach categorizes key dimensions in the evolution of farming systems to obtain a schema that allows consideration of the major historical transitions that have occurred, and how the interplay of economic, agronomic, technological, and social factors gave rise to mixed farming, to specialized farming, and to the modern diversified farm. The second approach is a statistical & graphical analysis using custom tabulations from the 1981, 1986, and 1991 Census of Agriculture. The data are used to examine trends in the bivariate relationships between key structural variables and the levels of enterprise diversification on Saskatchewan farms. This part includes an analysis of data pertaining to the mix of crops & livestock produced in the province from 1911 to 1999. The third approach is a set of 25 case studies of agricultural diversification based on manager interviews. The cases are presented in tabular form under categories dealing with organizational & human factors in the history & development of the project. The concluding section of the report presents some observations extracted from the three approaches, particularly with respect to the development of diversification projects and diversification as rural development.

In the six countries under review in the NENA region (Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Tunisia), agriculture is carried out primarily by small-scale family farmers, the majority of whom run the risk of falling into the poverty trap, largely due to the continuous fragmentation of inherited landholdings. As such, the development of small-scale family farming can no longer be based solely on intensifying agriculture, as the farmers are not able to produce sufficient marketable surplus due to the limited size of their landholdings. An approach based strictly on agricultural activity is also insufficient (as small-scale family farms have already diversified their livelihoods with off-farm activities). In fact, developing small-scale farming cannot be achieved by focusing strictly on t he dimension of production.
