Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement Tms object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Download or read book The Atonement and the Modern Mind Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement and the Modern Mind Stake. The Atonement is a reality of such a sort that it can make no compromise. The man who fights it knows that he is fighting for his life, and puts all his strength Into the battle. To surrender is literally to give up himself, to cease to be the man he is, and to become another man. For the modern mind, therefore, as for the ancient, the attraction and the repulsion of Christianity are concentrated at the same point; the cross of Christ is man's only glory, or it is his final stumbling block. Book Eternal Atonement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eternal Atonement Classic Reprint written by Roswell Dwight Hitchcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eternal Atonement Dr. Hitchcock published little in his life-time. His mind was so active, and he was so constantly giving out fresh thoughts to stimulate others, that he left himself little space to revise and elaborate for the press. Be sides, his power was in himself quite as much as in his words. His own personality was so marked, that his presence in the pulpit or the lecture-room, at once commanded attention, and gave emphasis to what he uttered. That personal magnetism cannot be recalled though it remains to all who knew him a most vivid and precious memory. But now that he is gone, we can only read these silent pages, supplying, as best we may, the flashing eye and the thrilling voice. The greatest of the apostles said that without controversy the mystery of godliness was vast; and even if he used mystery in a sense dif ferent from our own, and had in mind a doctrine other than the atonement, both his noun and his intention could readily be used in this discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life's Atonement, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel In rough working-dress, who lounge about with their hands in their pockets, kicking the pebbles on the highway in a listless fashion or leaning in listless fashion against the gate or the walls; or standing listlessly, with humped shoulders, on the kerb-stone, spitting at a mark on the road. They are for the most part sturdy fellows, with a general aspect of uneasy massiveness; an aspect strengthened by the cut and weight of their loose clothing. Suddenly the incurious traveller who observes these things is startled by a yell in which many voices mingle, and the lounging crowd is thrown into a state of mad activity. Every body converges to one point, and there is a fight to get there. At that point a head and shoulders appear above the high dock wall, and a hand showers down a little snow-storm of limp tickets. The snow-storm lasts for a second or two only, and every man in the crowd fights for a flake of it, for dear life. Like other flakes, it will melt in his hand, though somewhat more slowly than the common, since it will at least last until meat and drink are found. The scrambling fight goes on until the last ticket is rescued from the dust or mud. The winners in the fight range. Comprehensive theological responses to violence must also address the role of collective passivity of bystanders of violence. Beyond Apathy examines the theological significance of bystander participation in patterns of violence and violation within contemporary Western culture, giving particular attention to the social issues of bullying, white racism, and sexual violence. In doing so, it constructs a theology of redeeming grace for bystanders to violence that foregrounds the significance of social action in bringing about Gods basileia.

Download or read book The Atonement of Christ and the Justification of the Sinner Classic Reprint written by Andrew Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement of Christ, and the Justification of the Sinner In looking into the composition of the human mind we observe various passions and propensities; and if we inspect their operations, we shall see in each a marked aversion from the true God, and from all true religion. For example: Man loves to think, and cannot live without thinking; but he does not love to think of God; God is not in all his thoughts. Man delights in activity, is perpetually in motion, but has no heart to act for God. Men take pleasure in conversation, and are never more cheerful than when engaged in it; but if God and religion be introduced, they are usually struck dumb, and show an inclination to drop the subject. Men greatly de light in hearing and telling news but if the glorious news of the gospel be sounded in their ears, it fre quentlv 'proves as unwelcome as Paul's preaching at Athens. In fine, man feels the necessity of a God, but has no relish for the true God. There is a remarka ble instance of this in the conduct of these nations planted by the king of Assyria in the cities of Sa maria. They were consumed by wild beasts, and considered it as an expression of displeasure from the god of the land. They wished to become ao quainted with him, that they might please him. An Israelitish priest is sent to teach them the manner of the god of the land. But when he taught them the fear of Jehovah, his character and worship do not seem to have suited their taste; for each nation pre ferred the worship of its own gods. 2 Kings, 17. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine of Atonement: By the Son of God Now, there is'one section of the Christian Church in this country which for 300 years has borne testimony (variably, imperfectly, Sometimes even being grossly unfaithful to its high calling, but still more thoroughly, on the whole, than any other sect of which I know) to the divine Word in the human soul which bids it resist the inaposition of that yoke at whatever cost, and in whatever form. During the last two centuries it has wholly abjured the bigotry, and as thoroughly retained the Protestant zeal, courage, and freedom-loving spirit of its Puritan founders. I had the hap piness of being born and reared in that denomination. I cannot help thinking that, had it been SO fortunate as to have numbered you among its children, you would not now be isolated and unable to occupy a Christian pulpit. I know it has for a season been misled into a course which appears to me one of, at least, partial unfaithfulness to its great hereditary principles and trusts, by allow ing a doctrinal name (which is a creed) to be fixed upon it. But I cannot doubt it is sound at heart, and will, ere long, recover its true position - one in which it can Offer to men like yourself a fitting sphere and legitimate home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atoning Sacrifice: A Display of Love Not of Wrath Even to discuss the subject of atonement is at the present, putting to hazard a man's good name, if not his standing in the church. If he departs from the beaten path, the cry of wanderer is raised. If he refuses to use old names and old forms of expression, he is in danger of being thought heretical. Scarcely can he venture even to discuss minor points relative to the subject, without finding some one to cry out against him. This is nafon tunate in regard to discovering what is true, and discour aging to those who incline to pursue investigations of this nature. Still there are minds deeply enough engaged in this great cause, to venture upon the pursuit of what is scriptural, and upon the rejection of what philosophy has added to the Scriptures.
