Download or read book Beyond Anarchy and Tyranny in Religious Epistemology written by Charles Hawkins and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1997 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Anarchy and Tyranny in Religious Epistemology reveals the implications of the poststructuralist encounter with critical theory for postliberal theology. The explication and examination this book entails focus on the contours of the postliberal project, the development and present state of critical theory, the fundamental arguments of the poststructuralists, and the interchange of the three within the larger philosophical landscape. A constructive proposal as to the shape of a religious epistemology after modernity is based upon the critique and analysis of this philosophical/theological landscape.

Book Christian Tradition Today

Download or read book Christian Tradition Today written by Jeffrey C. K. Goh and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study critically examines the postliberal project, with special reference to George Lindbeck, the "founding father" of postliberalism. In an age of profound cultural change, is it feasible to locate the future of the Church and of the world on a consensus-building hermeneutic that dwells in the particularity of the Christian Scripture as its exclusive home? Seeing the theological task as a hermeneutical task founded upon the premise that truth is revealed in a dialectical way, the author provides an intelligible framework for dialogue with the postliberal school of thought. This dialogue, he argues, is ultimately determined by the overarching question of what it means to be Church. Towards a critical synthesis of the ecclesiological impact of this dialogue, the author offers a tightly argued and informative discussion on five pairs of key concepts: tradition and authority, Bible and de-Christianization, hermeneutics and revelation, religion and experience, doctrine and truth.

Download or read book The Matter of Evil written by Drew M. Dalton and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and entirely new account of ethical reasoning that reconceives the traditional understanding of ethical action negatively In this radical reconsideration of ethical reasoning in contemporary European philosophy, Drew M. Dalton makes the case for an absolutely grounded account of ethical normativity developed from a scientifically informed and purely materialistic metaphysics. Expanding on speculative realist arguments, Dalton argues that the limits placed on the nature of ethical judgments by Kant’s critique can be overcome through a moral evaluation of the laws of nature—specifically, the entropic principle that undergirds the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology. In order to extract a moral meaning from this simple material fact, Dalton scrutinizes the presumptions of classical accounts and traditional understandings of good and evil within the history of Western philosophy and ultimately asserts that ethical normativity can be reestablished absolutely without reverting to dogmatism. By overturning our assumptions about the nature and value of reality, The Matter of Evil: From Speculative Realism to Ethical Pessimism presents a provocative new model of ethical responsibility that is both logically justifiable and scientifically sound. Dalton argues for “ethical pessimism,” a position previously marginalized in the West, as a means to cultivate an account of ethical responsibility and political activism that takes seriously the unbecoming of being and the moral horror of existence.

Book The Essential Reinhold Niebuhr

Download or read book The Essential Reinhold Niebuhr written by Reinhold Niebuhr and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theologian, ethicist, and political analyst, Reinhold Niebuhr was a towering figure of twentieth-century religious thought. Now newly repackaged, this important book gathers the best of Niebuhr’s essays together in a single volume. Selected, edited, and introduced by Robert McAfee Brown—a student and friend of Niebuhr’s and himself a distinguished theologian—the works included here testify to the brilliant polemics, incisive analysis, and deep faith that characterized the whole of Niebuhr’s life.“This fine anthology makes available to a new generation the thought of one of the most penetrating and rewarding of twentieth-century minds. Reinhold Niebuhr remains the great illuminator of the dark conundrums of human nature, history and public policy.”—Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.“Sparkling gems. . . brought from the shadows of history into contemporary light. Beautifully selected and edited, they show that Niebuhr’s fiery polemics and gracious assurances still speak with power to us today.”—Roger L. Shinn“An extremely useful volume.”—David Brion Davis, New York Review of Books“This collection, which brings together Niebuhr’s most penetrating and enduring essays on theology and politics, should demonstrate for a new generation that his best thought transcends the immediate historical setting in which he wrote. . . . [Brown’s] introduction succinctly presents the central features of Niebuhr’s life and thought.”—Library Journal

Book Critical Issues in Electronic Media

Download or read book Critical Issues in Electronic Media written by Simon Penny and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Issues in Electronic Media is an interdisciplinary sourcebook that offers new critical perspectives directly related to, or arising from, the practice of electronic media art. It sketches the changing topology of culture as it enters electronic space and specifically addresses questions of art practice in that space. Some of the contributions focus on the dynamics of specific emerging media such as interactive media, while others look at the cultural conditions formed by, and forming around, new technological complexes. Still others examine contemporary technocultural manifestations against a background of social and technological history. The contributors are professionally and geographically diverse, representing professional fields such as computer graphics, video, sound, drama, and visual arts as well as media, cultural and literary theory, and the social sciences. Together, these essays provide a rich survey of contemporary technological critique and offer a perspective on creative practice in technological media.

Book Reason Freedom and Democracy in Islam

Download or read book Reason Freedom and Democracy in Islam written by Abdolkarim Soroush and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abdolkarim Soroush has emerged as one of the leading moderate revisionist thinkers of the Muslim world. He and his contemporaries in other Muslim countries are shaping what may become Islam's equivalent of the Christian Reformation: a period of questioning traditional practices and beliefs and, ultimately, of upheaval. Presenting eleven of his essays, this volume makes Soroush's thought readily available in English for the first time. The essays set forth his views on such matters as the freedom of Muslims to interpret the Qur'an, the inevitability of change in religion, the necessity of freedom of belief, and the compatibility of Islam and democracy. Throughout, Soroush emphasizes the rights of individuals in their relationship with both government and God, explaining that the ideal Islamic state can only be defined by the beliefs and will of the majority.

Book The Heavens and the Earth Graeco Roman Ancient Chinese and Mediaeval Islamic Images of the World

Download or read book The Heavens and the Earth Graeco Roman Ancient Chinese and Mediaeval Islamic Images of the World written by Vittorio Cotesta and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vittorio Cotesta’s The Heavens and the Earth traces the origin of the images of the world typical of the Graeco-Roman, Ancient Chinese and Medieval Islamic civilisations. Each of them had its own peculiar way of understanding the universe, life, death, society, power, humanity and its destiny. The comparative analysis carried out here suggests that they all shared a common human aspiration despite their differences: human being is unique; differences are details which enrich its image. Today, the traditions derived from these civilisations are often in competition and conflict. Reference to a common vision of humanity as a shared universal entity should lead, instead, to a quest for understanding and dialogue.
