Book Beyond All Expectation

Download or read book Beyond All Expectation written by John Mark and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step back in time and join Hans Luther as he invites you to listen to conversations about Christianity in terms that are easily understood. Experience the scene around the kitchen table in the home of Martin Luther through the eyes of his young son. Every noon along with the meal there are generous portions of grace, mercy, and peace, of love and faith. Eager to learn more about the Christian faith, Hans later probes the minds of students who share the table and who have joined in the table talk. He explores the fundamental questions of Christian belief and then applies what he has learned to his own life experiences, including times of crisis. This is a book about God, life, and lessons learned that apply as well today as they did then.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond Expectations, Onoso Imoagene delves into the multifaceted identities of second-generation Nigerian adults in the United States and Britain. She argues that they conceive of an alternative notion of "black" identity that differs radically from African American and Black Caribbean notions of "black" in the United States and Britain. Instead of considering themselves in terms of their country of destination alone, second-generation Nigerians define themselves in complicated ways that balance racial status, a diasporic Nigerian ethnicity, a pan-African identity, and identification with fellow immigrants. Based on over 150 interviews, Beyond Expectations seeks to understand how race, ethnicity, and class shape identity and how globalization, transnationalism, and national context inform sense of self.

Book Exploiting Hope

  • Author : Jeremy Snyder
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-09-03

Download or read book Exploiting Hope written by Jeremy Snyder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear stories of people in terrible and seemingly intractable situations who are preyed upon by someone offering promises of help. Frequently these cases are condemned in terms of "exploiting hope." These accusations are made in a range of contexts: human smuggling, employment relationships, unproven medical 'cures.' We hear this concept so often and in so many contexts that, with all its heavy lifting in public discourse, its actual meaning tends to lose focus. Despite its common use, it can be hard to understand precisely what is wrong about exploiting hope what can accurately be captured under this concept, and what should be done. In this book, philosopher Jeremy Snyder offers an in-depth study of hope's exploitation. First, he examines the concept in the abstract, including a close look at how this term is used in the popular press and analysis of the concepts of exploitation and hope. This theory-based section culminates in a definitive account of what it is to exploit hope, and when and why doing so is morally problematic. The second section of the book examines the particularly dangerous cases in which unproven medical interventions target the most vulnerable: for example, participants in clinical trials, purchasing unproven stem cell interventions, "right to try" legislation, and crowdfunding for unproven medical interventions. This book is essential reading for ethical theorists, policymakers, and health researchers, on a topic of growing visibility and importance.

Book Futures Past

  • Author : Reinhart Koselleck
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2004-06-16

Download or read book Futures Past written by Reinhart Koselleck and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernity in the late eighteenth century transformed all domains of European life -intellectual, industrial, and social. Not least affected was the experience of time itself: ever-accelerating change left people with briefer intervals of time in which to gather new experiences and adapt. In this provocative and erudite book Reinhart Koselleck, a distinguished philosopher of history, explores the concept of historical time by posing the question: what kind of experience is opened up by the emergence of modernity? Relying on an extraordinary array of witnesses and texts from politicians, philosophers, theologians, and poets to Renaissance paintings and the dreams of German citizens during the Third Reich, Koselleck shows that, with the advent of modernity, the past and the future became 'relocated' in relation to each other. The promises of modernity -freedom, progress, infinite human improvement -produced a world accelerating toward an unknown and unknowable future within which awaited the possibility of achieving utopian fulfillment. History, Koselleck asserts, emerged in this crucial moment as a new temporality providing distinctly new ways of assimilating experience. In the present context of globalization and its resulting crises, the modern world once again faces a crisis in aligning the experience of past and present. To realize that each present was once an imagined future may help us once again place ourselves within a temporality organized by human thought and humane ends as much as by the contingencies of uncontrolled events.

Book excerpt: Studies on druidry, Jungian psychology, politics, history and the time ahead In 2003 John Michael Greer became the seventh Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA), an initiatory organization teaching Celtic nature spirituality which was founded in 1912. The outcome was that his writings began to stray into territory very far from the Hermetic occult philosophy that had been the previous focus of his career. The essays included in this volume chronicle some of the themes he explored as a result: Druidry, Jungian psychology, politics, history, and the shape of the future in a society in decline.
