In Beyond Portraiture, renowned photographer Bryan Peterson shows how to spot those “ah-ha!” moments and capture them forever. A teary child...old people laughing together...a smiling girl with big, big hair. Everyone remember pictures like these, usually taken by a mother, a father, a friend holding a camera, forever preserving small yet revealing vignettes of our personal histories. But we always relied on pure luck and chance to catch those moments. Peterson’s approach explains what makes a photo memorable, how to spot the universal themes that everyone can identify with, and how to use lighting, setting, and exposure to reveal the wonder and the joy of everyday moments. Book excerpt: From the editors of TIME, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, comes an exclusive oral history of an extraordinary decade of sorrow and resilience. Accompanied by stunning black-and-white portraits by photographer Marco Grob, more than three dozen witnesses from Ground Zero to the White House to the mountains of Afghanistan give their accounts of what they saw and felt as the world changed, starting from the first moments of the attack on America through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "I just happen to be looking towards the Statue of Liberty. What I saw was a plane coming eye-level toward me, getting larger and larger. I can see the U on the tail," recalls Stanley Praimnath, one of just four survivors from the top floors of the World Trade Center. Vice President Dick Cheney recalls the earliest minutes of the war on terror, his immediate determination to "use all of the means available." President Bush remembers climbing on the wrecked fire engine at Ground Zero with a bullhorn in his hand and surveying the faces looking at him, knowing they were uncertain he'd be the leader they needed. TIME interviewed fire fighters and soldiers, widows and orphans, a general and an antiwar activist, to weave their stories of the 9/11 decade into an epic narrative of tragedy and transcendence. The photos and stories will be featured in TIME magazine as a special report commemorating 9/11 and will be the basis of an HBO documentary to premiere at the same time.

The trip would have been great since she admired the famous painter, however, acquiring flu on her travel made her head spin throughout the tour, it got worse when the same night, her friends played a lame prank on her that made her paint an unfinished portrait, that is rumored to be cursed aside from it’s disrespectful, it transported her to another period and place. Suddenly, she was on a plaza in broad daylight, unfamiliar faces eyeing her like she’s doing something wrong, people calling her a different name, a man claiming her his fiancé, and meeting the painter who did not finish the painting, however, he told her he never lifts a brush, as a matter of fact, he’s a doctor, nothing more, nothing less. Asteria was not only stuck in the past but she was also bound in an identity that has a bad reputation, a wedding to be prepared, another stranger appeared inside her bedroom calling her “Mi Alma” and questions she had a hard time seeking to find the answers to, starting with three: why is she here? How will she return? and Why is the unfinished portrait cursed?

On assignment in Jamaica for Time magazine, photo-journalist David Burnett first photographed Bob Marley in 1976 and continued to document the Reggae legend on tour throughout Europe during the spring of 1977. Burnett's vision coupled with Marley's larger-than-life charisma resulted in an amazing collection of previously unseen images witnessed for the first time in Soul Rebel: An Intimate Portrait of Bob Marley in Jamaica and Beyond. Of the more than 200 images published here, only a handful were ever used for the Time article. While focusing on Marley, Burnett's work also canvassed a broad array of burgeoning Reggae talents in Marley's native Jamaica, including portraits of Peter Tosh, Lee Scratch Perry, Burning Spear, and Ras Michael. Compelling and incomparably candid, Soul Rebel honors the anniversary of Marley's birth with a testament to the legacy of a legend. For any Reggae lover or music history buff, Soul Rebel offers a matchless glimpse into Marley's life shortly before his tragic death in 1981.

Book Book of Roy

Download or read book Book of Roy written by Lynne Tillman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 1998 to 2005 Neil Drabble photographed an American teenager, Roy, as he grew from adolescence to early manhood. On one level this extensive body of work can be viewed as a fascinating document of an always-compelling transition. Closer scrutiny reveals further nuances; a collaboration, a partnership, a personal portrait and at the same time a universal picture of adolescence. Drabble chose not to depict significant events that might appear in a family album nor definitive moments associated with documentary photography. Instead, these photographs concentrate on the listless, off-scene periods, the 'in between moments' of everyday life. This focus on the marginal passages of disregarded time situates the viewer at the heart of adolescence, defined as the period between childhood and adulthood, suspended between longing (for the deferred promise of adulthood) and regret (for the loss of childhood as refuge). By photographing the same person repeatedly and intimately over their formative years, a sense of mirroring began to emerge, reawakening something of the artist's own adolescent self, blurring the line between portrait and self-portrait"--Provided by publisher.
