Book Postwar Amateur Film Practices in a Transnational Perspective

Download or read book Postwar Amateur Film Practices in a Transnational Perspective written by Hanna Stein and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amateur film and amateur media practices have attracted increasing interest in recent decades in the context of the "visual turn". Questions of agency, participatory and political/militant film practices, and of representations of "self" and "other" are of interest as well as the institutions and networks of amateur productions. This special issue of "zeitgeschichte" contributes to this field of research by examining international and transnational developments of amateur films in the period after the Second World War. The collected contributions analyze national specifics and regional shapings of practices as well as cultural constructions in amateur film and video, they trace transnational entanglements of amateur media and tackle cross-border amateur filmmaking and internationally and globally shared discursive references and uses of metaphors in video activism. The authors elaborate parallels to organizational structures in amateur film practices in specific sociopolitical and cultural contexts and discuss aspects of memory and the appropriation of hegemonic visual cultures in individual film practices.

Book Sustainable Resilience in Women s Film and Video Organizations

Download or read book Sustainable Resilience in Women s Film and Video Organizations written by Rosanna Maule and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates a distinctive lineage of critical interventions in moving image culture and in the public sphere through the trajectories of a small number of film and video organizations established between the 1970s and the early 1980s in Western Europe and North America mainly by women and still operative today. The six case studies examined (Drac Màgic, Women Make Movies, Groupe Intervention Vidéo, Leeds Animation Workshop, bildwechsel, Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir) have maintained a discrete yet continuing presence within an audiovisual industry and a cultural system dominated by institutionalized and corporate forms of production and distribution. Their longevity – quite a rarity in the independent circuit – makes a strong case for the sustainability of feminist/LGBTQ media activism in the public sphere, in spite of its low-key profile. This volume will be of interest to academicians of history and communication studies, feminist and LGBTQ topics, and gender-related cinematic culture.

Book Literatur inter und transmedial Inter and Transmedial Literature

Download or read book Literatur inter und transmedial Inter and Transmedial Literature written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Fast forward written by Ingvild Goetz and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our accelerated era of "faster," "better," "farther," "higher," this comprehensive catalogue of the media art of the world-renowned Goetz Collection in Munich offers not only a survey of much of the most important film and video work to have been made over the last 15 years, but also a vision of how our habit of seeing and experiencing the world--in perpetual fast forward mode--has come out of our own cultural acceleration. The works brought together in this 532-page volume are at once an expression of and a reaction to the hyper-speed of our times. They span from the slow-motion images in David Claerbout's still life-like landscape portrait, Ruurlo, Bocurloscheweg 1910, to the rhythmic-dynamic disco tempo of Wolfgang Tillmans's Lights (Body). This superb collection includes videos, video installations and films by Matthew Barney, Olaf Breuning, Tracey Emin, Fischli & Weiss, Rodney Graham, Mona Hatoum, Pierre Huyghe, Isaac Julien, Mike Kelley, Sharon Lockhart, Sarah Morris, Raymond Pettibon, Pipilotti Rist, Anri Sala, Ann-Sofi Sidén, Diana Thater and others.

Book Subjectivity across Media

Download or read book Subjectivity across Media written by Maike Sarah Reinerth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media in general and narrative media in particular have the potential to represent not only a variety of both possible and actual worlds but also the perception and consciousness of characters in these worlds. Hence, media can be understood as "qualia machines," as technologies that allow for the production of subjective experiences within the affordances and limitations posed by the conventions of their specific mediality. This edited collection examines the transmedial as well as the medium-specific strategies employed by the verbal representations characteristic for literary texts, the verbal-pictorial representations characteristic for comics, the audiovisual representations characteristic for films, and the interactive representations characteristic for video games. Combining theoretical perspectives from analytic philosophy, cognitive theory, and narratology with approaches from phenomenology, psychosemiotics, and social semiotics, the contributions collected in this volume provide a state-of-the-art map of current research on a wide variety of ways in which subjectivity can be represented across conventionally distinct media.

Book Pioneering Participatory Art Practices

Download or read book Pioneering Participatory Art Practices written by Annemarie Kok and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory art practices allow members of an audience to actively contribute to the creation of art. Annemarie Kok provides a detailed analysis and explanation of the use of participatory strategies in art in the so-called ›long sixties‹ (starting around 1958 and ending around 1974) in Western Europe. Drawing on extensive archival materials and with the help of the toolbox of the actor-network theory, she maps out the various actors of three case studies of participatory projects by John Dugger and David Medalla, Piotr Kowalski, and telewissen, all of which were part of documenta 5 (Kassel, 1972).

Book Cinematic Articulation in Motion Graphics

Download or read book Cinematic Articulation in Motion Graphics written by Michael Betancourt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a critical and theoretical approach to the semiotics of motion pictures as they are applied to a broader range of constructions than traditional commercial narrative productions. This interdisciplinary approach begins with the problems posed by motion perception to develop a model of cinematic interpretation that includes both narrative and non-narrative types of productions. Contrasting traditional theatrical projection and varieties of new media, this book integrates analyses of title sequences, music videos, and visual effects with discussions on classic and avant-garde films. It further explores the intersection between formative audio-visual cues identified by viewers and how viewers’ desires direct engagement with the motion picture to present a framework for understanding cinematic articulation. This new theoretical model incorporates much of what was neglected and gives greater prominence to formerly critical marginal productions by showing the fundamental connections that link all moving imagery and animated text, whether it tells a story or not. This insightful work will appeal to students and academics in film and media studies.
