Book Beware the Stranger

Download or read book Beware the Stranger written by Peter Noble and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stranger (survenant) represents an important theme in Quebec literature of the second half of the twentieth century. This book analyses the role of the survenant in five major novels dating from 1945 to 1992 and shows how the theme is constantly reworked and revitalised by the authors selected. The arrival of a survenant in a community brings to the surface the conflicts and tensions which had been latent. The consequences can be tragic for all concerned. At the least the community is changed forever. This is the first study of the way in which different Quebecois authors treat the survenant and should be of interest to all students of Quebec literature and culture.

Book Beware the Evil Eye 4 Volume Set

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye 4 Volume Set written by John H. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 1222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth makes reference to one of the oldest beliefs in the ancient world—the malignity of an Evil Eye. The Holy Scriptures in their original languages contain no less than twenty-four references to the Evil Eye, although this is obscured by most modern Bible translations. John H. Elliott’s Beware the Evil Eye describes this belief and associated practices, its history, its voluminous appearances in ancient cultures, and the extensive research devoted to it over the centuries in order to unravel this enigma for readers who have never heard of the Evil Eye and its presence in the Bible. The four volumes cover the ancient world from Sumer to the Middle Ages.

Book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 2

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 2 written by John H. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present volume, Elliott addresses the most extensive sources of Evil Eye belief in antiquity--the cultures of Greece and Rome. In this period, features of the belief found in Mesopotamian and Egyptian sources are expanded to the point where an "Evil Eye belief complex" becomes apparent. This complex of features associated with the Evil Eye--human eye as key organ of information, eye as active not passive, eye as channel of emotion and dispositions, especially envy, arising in the heart, possessors, victims, defensive strategies, and amulets--is essential to an understanding of the literary references to the Evil Eye. This volume, along with chapter 2 of volume 1, sets and illuminates the context for examining Evil Eye belief and practice in the Bible and the biblical communities (the focus of volume 3).

Book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 3

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 3 written by John H Elliott and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third volume of his epic exploration of the use of the Evil Eye motif in ancient texts, John H. Elliott turns his attention to biblical writings. A repeated theme in the Old Testament, which contains around twenty explicit references, mentions of the Evil Eye also appear in the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as in the writings of Philo and Josephus. Evil Eye belief and practice continued into the early Jesus movement, appearing not only in the Gospels but in Paul's letter to the Galatians. The Evil Eye in the ancient world acted in a number of ways - physiological, psychological, economic, social and moral - and the place it occupied was not easily usurped. Beware the Evil Eye is a fascinating analysis of one of the most prevalent superstitions in the ancient world and its cultural influence.

International Conference and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents selected papers read at the first meeting of the Society for Jewish and Biblical Studies in Central Europe, in Piliscsaba, Hungary, February 2009, but does not publish the proceedings of this meeting (for a clarification see here). The papers investigate various aspects of the concept "Stranger" in Jewish tradition, from the Hebrew Bible to Mediaeval Jewish thought. The bulk of the material focuses on Early Jewish literature, which mirrors an intensive interaction with the Hellenistic system of thought, and the development of concurring Jewish interpretations of traditional values. The papers of the volume provide insightful case studies about the formation of Jewish identity in diverse periods of Israelite and Jewish history, as well as the different attitudes to strangers, being either outsiders, or belonging to opposing sects of Judaism itself. The reader finds essays of historical, literary, and hermeneutical attention; of interest also to scholars of various forms of ancient and mediaeval Judaism.

Book excerpt: Shopping malls, or fashion malls, are where most people prefer to do their shopping. Promenades by another name, they offer a one-stop marketplace to satisfy most buyers. A mall also provides shoppers with an indoor covered atmosphere, an air-conditioned shelter and safe haven where one can spend an entire day leisurely browsing from store to store before indulging in one of the many food outlets available. Some malls also offer various attractions and amenities aside from the usual shops. Conversely a mall is also an area where the less desirables may wander about for lack of anywhere else to prowl. They are there not to shop, at least for merchandise per se, but to observe and stare at the attractive faces parading around. Malls are filled with girls and women of all ages, innocently going about their business unaware that perhaps someone is being more than merely gawked at. Perhaps some creep may be lurking, watching and waiting until his chosen one appears. And when she does, that same foreboding, diabolical fiend may choose to follow the alluring prey, one particular shopper who is preparing to exit the mall and return to her vehicle and then, just maybe, her worst nightmare occurs

Book excerpt: Sole Paddle speaks of solitude and relationships, of walking alone and in community—and of embracing the present and future as part of a team, but also, sometimes with a sole paddle. It tells the story of John Bear, a young man from the isolated wilderness community of Reflection Lake, raised by his grandfather and his grandmother, and influenced by the parish priest. Late summer, John—hunter, fisherman, tourist guide—returns to school, where the principal and two teachers encourage him to complete his senior-year studies and develop his leadership skills. John participates in the annual school play, a presentation that highlights the community's need for wisdom and courage to heal itself, and step confidently into the future. In co-researching, co-writing the script, and narrating the play, John deepens his understanding of himself and his community which awakens a desire to learn more about the outside world. When a forest fire threatens Reflection Lake, the community is spared by John's, his grandfather's, and other firefighters's work, and by a life-giving three-day rain. Following his grandfather's sudden death shortly after the fire, John observes that the past includes painful memories as well as disempowering and empowering stories; the present offers obstacles and complex choices; and the future requires courage, strength and wisdom to navigate. He decides to pursue a university degree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lu won’t go with just anyone! Lu is waiting to be picked up after school. She stands on the sidewalk, all alone, and it starts to rain. Ms. Smith walks by, and offers to take her home. Ms. Smith lives in Lu’s neighborhood—but does Lu really know her? Lu asks herself, what’s her first name? Does she dye her hair red? What’s her dog’s name? And she says, “I don’t know you, so I won’t go with you! And besides, Mama said I should wait.” As other adults—all of whom Lu has met in some capacity before—offer to take her home, Lu continues to consider if she really knows them. One by one, she refuses to go with them. Until, finally, the person Mama said she should go home with shows up—though his appearance is a surprise to the reader! This sensitively narrated story illustrates how clear rules and arrangements can help protect and empower children during an especially vulnerable time of day. The ending includes a prompt for readers to create their own similar “safe” list, and a list of resources for parents.
