She enters William in the ¿Fattest Man in the Universe¿ contest, and she is determined to win. Carole, Betty¿s younger sister, too weak to stand up to Betty¿s threats and intimidation, is forced to assist in the endless round of cooking the dozens of chickens needed each day for William¿s inexorable assault on hugeness. When Captain Leonard of the Board of Health comes to check on the ¿large carnivore¿ that is devouring twenty chickens a day he is initially an annoying bureaucrat, but ultimately a timely dessert. Albert, claiming to own one of the largest chicken farms in the U.S. arrives to negotiate a deal. For using William¿s picture on the logo of his product Albert will pay Betty a percentage of the profits on each bird sold and ancillary rights on tie-ins. The deal is struck. When Dorothy, Albert¿s sister, appears claiming she is the true owner of the chicken farm, a struggle between the siblings ensues for control of William and the potential fortune at stake. But it is Doctor Martin who brings the tragic coup de grace to Betty and her plan for achieving her goals of motherhood.

Helen suspected Murray was no angel when she married him. After all, as a stand-up comic he was always on the road and she knew comics could be loose cannons. Helen knew she was trading the risk Murray would bring to any relationship, let alone marriage, for the excitement of the gamble. While Helen might have been willing to adjust to Murray and his new stroke induced limits, the stakes were raised and the game was changed by Gladys's admission of the affair. So now Helen is left on the horns of dilemma: How can she be a nurturing caretaker for a man who has deceived her (with her own sister, yet) while knowing he is a snake with no visible conscience?

Book excerpt: In this classic novel from Debbie Macomber—available for the first time as an eBook—a feisty waitress and a handsome professor receive an education in love over Chaucer and chicken-pot pie. Meghan O’Day isn’t sure what captures her fancy more: the sexy stranger in her Wichita diner or his reading material. Before long, Grey Carlyle becomes a regular, ordering the nightly specials and chatting with the spirited redhead about the classics. Certain that her favorite customer has an appetite for more than home cooking, Meghan decides it’s time to teach the good professor a thing or two about romance. Grey notices the sparkle in Meghan’s eyes the moment she opens up about her passion for literature. She’s the breath of fresh air and joy this reserved and lonely teacher needs in his life. They say opposites attract, and Grey becomes a true believer each time he holds Meghan in his arms—even as they hit a few speed bumps on the road to togetherness. But if Grey knows anything about great books, it’s that the best tales always have a happy ending. BONUS: This edition includes excerpts from Debbie Macomber's The Inn at Rose Harbor and Dashing Through the Snow. Published by Debbie Macomber Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Guild of Food Writers General Cookbook Award 2020 'A manual for living and a declaration of hope' Nigella Lawson 'A moving testimonial to the redemptive power of cooking. Generous, honest and uplifting' Diana Henry There are lots of ways to start a story, but this one begins with a chicken... When the world becomes overwhelming, Ella Risbridger focuses on the little things that bring her joy, like enjoying a glass of wine when cooking, FaceTiming with a friend whilst making bagels, and sharing recipes that are good for the soul. One night she found herself lying on her kitchen floor, wondering if she would ever get up – and it was the thought of a chicken, of roasting it, and of eating it, that got her to her feet and made her want to be alive. Midnight Chicken is a cookbook. Or, at least, you'll flick through these pages and find recipes so inviting that you will head straight for the kitchen: roast garlic and tomato soup, uplifting chilli-lemon spaghetti, charred leek lasagne, squash skillet pie, spicy fish finger sandwiches and burnt-butter brownies. It's the kind of cooking you can do a little bit drunk, that is probably better if you've got a bottle of wine open and a hunk of bread to mop up the sauce. But if you settle down and read it with a cup of tea (or a glass of that wine), you'll also discover that it's an annotated list of things worth living for – a manifesto of moments worth living for. This is a cookbook to make you fall in love with the world again. Featuring an entire chapter on storecupboard recipes. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of Judaism back to its roots in India. Blamed by the nomadic Aryans (Devas and Christyanis) for two floods that destroyed the Indus Civilzation. The Yadava (Yahu-Deva) city dwellers, artisans, and farmers fled India for the Middle East and othe rparts of te world, taking with them and propagating their religion of Yishvara in their new homes. In the Middle East this Yishvara religion later became Judaism. The book gives many examples of the thousands of Hindu place names in various parts of the world and how Sanskirt influenced English. The author describes how the true meanings of the religious words of Yishvara, such as Prayer (Pray), Faith (Phath), Reverence (Rav-ara), Idolatry (Adaultar), etc., have changed so drastically that no one even knows what Religion is any more or what to do with it. Because of the computer age and other scientific innovations, Yishvara, the ancestor fo Judaism, has a powerful message to deliver to this millennium. When the reader finishes this book, he'll know more about religion than the Pope and the Dalai Lama.
