Book The History and Present State of Virginia

Download or read book The History and Present State of Virginia written by Robert Beverley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in London in 1705, Robert Beverley wrote and published The History and Present State of Virginia, one of the earliest printed English-language histories about North America by an author born there. Like his brother-in-law William Byrd II, Beverley was a scion of Virginia's planter elite, personally ambitious and at odds with royal governors in the colony. As a native-born American--most famously claiming "I am an Indian--he provided English readers with the first thoroughgoing account of the province's past, natural history, Indians, and current politics and society. In this new edition, Susan Scott Parrish situates Beverley and his History in the context of the metropolitan-provincial political and cultural issues of his day and explores the many contradictions embedded in his narrative. Parrish's introduction and the accompanying annotation, along with a fresh transcription of the 1705 publication and a more comprehensive comparison of emendations in the 1722 edition, will open Beverley's History to new, twenty-first-century readings by students of transatlantic history, colonialism, natural science, literature, and ethnohistory.

Book What is History For

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beverley Southgate
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2006-06-01
  • ISBN : 1134267223
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book What is History For written by Beverley Southgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experienced author of history and theory presents this examination of the purpose of history at a time when recent debates have rendered the question 'what is history for?' of utmost importance. Charting the development of historical studies and examining how history has been used, this study is exceptional in its focus on the future of the subject as well as its past. It is argued that history in the twenty-first century must adopt a radical and morally therapeutic role instead of studying for 'its own sake'. Providing examples of his vision of 'history in post-modernity', Beverley Southgate focuses on the work of four major historians, including up-to-date publications: Robert A. Rosenstone's study of Americans living in nineteenth-century Japan Peter Novick's work on the Holocaust Sven Lindgvist's A History of Bombing Tzvetan Todorov's recently published work on the twentieth century. This makes compulsive reading for all students of history, cultural studies and the general reader, as notions of historical truth and the reality of the past are questioned, and it becomes vital to rethink history's function and renegotiate its uses for the postmodern age.

Book History Meets Fiction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beverley C. Southgate
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-09-11
  • ISBN : 1317862570
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book History Meets Fiction written by Beverley C. Southgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is history factual, or just another form of fiction? Are there distinct boundaries between the two, or just extensive borderlands? How do novelists represent historians and history? The relationship between history and fiction has always been contentious and sometimes turbulent, not least because the two have traditionally been seen as mutually exclusive opposites. However, new hybrid forms of writing – from historical fiction to docudramas to fictionalised biographies – have led to the blurring of boundaries, and given rise to the claim that history itself is just another form of fiction. In his thought-provoking new book, Beverley Southgate untangles this knotty relationship, setting his discussion in a broad historical and philosophical context. Throughout, Southgate invokes a variety of writers to illuminate his arguments, from Dickens and Proust, through Virginia Woolf and Daphne du Maurier, to such contemporary novelists as Tim O’Brien, Penelope Lively, and Graham Swift. Anyone interested in the many meeting points between history and fiction will find this an engaging, accessible and stimulating read.

Book The Life and After life of St John of Beverley

Download or read book The Life and After life of St John of Beverley written by Susan E. Wilson and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This represents the first study devoted to the life and after-life of St John of Beverley. The hagiographic works on John extend over nearly six hundred years from the 8th to the 15th centuries. Wilson uses these sources as a unique opportunity to examine the ways in which an Anglo-Saxon saint was promoted over a long period of time and was continually re-created in the image which the hagiographers or community required, depending on their current needs and perceptions. The volume also includes the first English translations of the Life and the miracle stories.

Book excerpt: * Dr Jonathan Foyle traces the importance of St John as both the founder and inspiration for the continuing development of Beverley Minster, one of the most spectacular and impressive of English non-cathedral churches* Lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned photographyBeverley Minster is one of the most spectacular and impressive of English non-cathedral churches. It owes its origins to the Saxon St John of Beverley, who is buried here, though most of what we see today dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, when Beverley was one of the largest and wealthiest towns in England and the Minster was a major pilgrimage center. Despite a long building program, the church was constructed in a consistent architectural style which gives the interior, in particular, a pleasing harmony. Dr Foyle traces the importance of St John as both the founder and the inspiration for the continuing development of the Minster, and the book is lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned photography.

Book Why Bother with History

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-11-04
  • ISBN : 1317875273
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Why Bother with History written by Beverley C. Southgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: .Why Bother With History? argues for an increasingly important role for a revitalised historical study. Examining the motivations of past historians, the author rejects the ancient aspiration to a 'history for its own sake' and argues that historians' importance lies in their own adoption of a moral standpoint, from which a story of the past can be told, that facilitates the attainment of a future we desire. Inevitably controversial, in that it challenges many of the assumptions of modernist history, this is an interdisciplinary book, which draws in particular on psychology and literature.

Book Down the Garden Path

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beverley Nichols
  • Publisher : Timber Press (OR)
  • Release : 2004-12
  • ISBN : 9780881927108
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Down the Garden Path written by Beverley Nichols and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Down the Garden Path has stood the test of time as one of the world's best-loved and most quoted gardening books. Ostensibly an account of the creation of a garden in Huntingdonshire in the 1930s, it is really about the underlying emotions and obsessions for which gardening is just a cover story. The secret of this book's success---and its timelessness---is that it does not seek to impress the reader with a wealth of expert knowledge or advice. Beverley Nichols proudly declares his status as a newcomer to gardening: "The best gardening books should be written by those who still have to search their brains for the honeysuckle's languid Latin name."As unforgettable as the plants in the garden are, the cast of visitors and neighbours who invariably turn up at inopportune moments are truly memorable. For every angelic Miss Hazlitt there is an insufferable Miss Wilkins waiting in the wings. For every thought-provoking Professor, there is an intrusive Mrs. M., whose chief offense may be that she is a "damnably efficient" gardener. From a disaster in building a rock garden---"It reminded me of those puddings made of spongecake and custard which are studded with almonds"---to a triumph in building an "avalanche" of chionodoxas---"Ah, but it was worth waiting for"---to further adventures with greenhouses, woodland gardens, not to mention cats and treacle, Nichols has left us a true gardening classic.
