Download or read book Between the Sun and the Moon Andean and Amazonian Myths and Legends written by Beatriz R. Alvarado and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magical clock in a castle full of hidden treasures. A family punished for its curiosity by being turned into stone. What do the above scenarios have in common? They are all part of the fabric of Peruvian tales that are retold on the pages ahead. Many cultures express ideas about their past and present through such a richness of myths and legends that magically describe what was, and what could have been, in a specific time and space. Each little Peruvian community I have visited in ceaseless travels across my native land has invariably found me sitting enthralled, by the sides of lagoon, river, or bridge; in a field or on a farm, listening to the wise voices of the people I meet there, and learning from them. I invite you to come along on a wonderful journey where you will meet supernatural characters with wonderful names like Pachamama, Mamakilla, Inti, the Apu spirits, and the Kocha deities, who interact with humans and determine their destiny. I hope that these tales of life, love, curiosity, magic, and adversity will touch you as they did me.

The sky has long served as a template for telling stories about the meaning of life. People have looked for likenesses between the domains of heaven and earth to help marry the unfamiliar above to the quotidian below. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first theoretical and experiential translation of Napo Runa mythology in English. Michael A. Guiding readers into Quichua ways of thinking and being--in which language itself is only a part of a communicative world that includes plants, animals, and the landscape--Uzendoski and Calapucha-Tapuy weave exacting translations into an interpretive argument with theoretical implications for understanding oral traditions, literacy, new technologies, and language. A companion websiteoffers photos, audio files, and videos of original performances illustrates the beauty and complexity of Amazonian Quichua poetic expressions.

Book An Amazonian Myth and Its History

Download or read book An Amazonian Myth and Its History written by Peter Gow and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Gow unites the ethnographic data collected by the fieldwork methods invented by Malinowski with Levi-Strauss's analyses of the relations between myth and time. His book is an analysis of a century of social transformation in an indigenous Amazonian society, the Piro people of PeruvianAmazonia, taking as its starting point a single myth told to the author by a Piro man. Gow explores Piro history and ethnography outwards into the domains of myth-telling in general, and following the logic of certain important myths, further out into important domains of Piro experience such asvisual art, shamanry and girls' initiation ritual. All of these domains, like the myths themselves, have been demonstrably changing over the period since the 1880s. The book then shows how these changes are in fact transformations of transformations, changes in social forms that are intrinsicallyabout change. The logic of these changes are then followed through the historical circumstances of Piro people from the 1880s to the 1980s, to show how the intrinsically transformational nature of Piro social forms led them to respond in the ways that they did to the coming of rubber bosses, missionaries, and film-makers.This book makes an important contribution to debates in anthropology on the nature of history and social change, as well as addressing neglected areas such as myth, visual art, and the methodological issues involved in addressing fieldwork and archival data.

Book The Mythology of South America

Download or read book The Mythology of South America written by John Bierhorst and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other continent, South America "has preserved the conditions that allow mythology to be freely produced." Dividing the continent into seven carefully mapped regions, John Bierhorst shows how South America's principal myths can be traced from tribe to tribe and how each region has developed its own unique oral tradition. Generous samples from the stories themselves introduce the female creators of the northern Andes, the male gods of the ancient Incas, and the Brazilian tricksters Sun and Moon. Originally published in 1988, Bierhorst has updated the text to reflect the abundance of new information that has become available since the mid 80s and written a new Afterward in which he emphasizes the durability of Indian mythology. Illustrations of native artwork and chapters devoted to special topics--including the connections between myths and politics--help to provide a well-rounded overview of this fascinating and little-known lore. Detailed maps show tribal locations and the distribution of key stories and samples of differing narrative styles add enrichment, as some of the world's purest and most powerful myths are made more accessible--and more meaningful--than ever before.

Book Myths and Legends of the Bolivian Andes

Download or read book Myths and Legends of the Bolivian Andes written by Marcial Villarroel Siles and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We gladly present this anthological book No 1, with reference to the region of the Andes and part of the series "Myths and Legends in Bolivian Literature." That it was conceived in an attempt to gather the mythical and legendary stories that happened in the territory of Bolivia, written by diverse authors and preferably Bolivians. With the aim of providing a mythological reference with literary sustenance for researchers and students. Living in a region where narrative wealth is everywhere, this book was inevitable. On the one hand, there is the rich bourge of popular culture, an inexhaustible source of myths, legends and stories, as well as all those manifestations of oral tradition that have been transmitted in the spaces of the family. On the other hand, there is that written production that many writers have conceived, either as a tribute to cultural traditions, or with formative intentions. That with its literary and historical quality, as for its theme, has reached meaning and significance for readers and researchers. Although this book does not pretend to be an inventory of the myths and legends of the heart of South America, it has tried to recover (in a laborious bibliographical search, although still unfinished), a specific production through time, with several purposes: One, to return to the readers the mythical literature that belongs to them and that, despite the implacable passage of the years and the epochs, could recover a history almost forgotten. Another, to enrich the imaginary with characters, feelings, situations and landscapes, magical and mythological, belonging to the most typical manifestations of our American culture.
