Book excerpt: This book has obviously been written for those who officiate, umpire, referee and judge sporting events. It has also been purposely designed for leaders in business, other professions and avocations to encourage "thinking outside the box" while establishing, reviewing or modifying their philosophy of leadership. If you look at this book only as through the eyes of a sports official, the "covers" may be too far apart...so read between the lines! Hopefully this book will help trap you into doing your own thinking for developing, re-thinking or re-framing your own leadership style. In other words, the author is challenging you to personalize your own style of leadership and make it work for you. The author also believes that many of you will be more focused in your philosophy of leadership and rewarded if you apply some of these thoughts and concepts to your own life style.

Book excerpt: This book is over eleven hundred statements about sports officials which are designed by the author to create ten seconds of laughter and possibly twenty seconds of thought. It is a great read for the sports fan and sports officials. Hopefully it will bring a smile when you read it as well as a smile when you see sports officials during a game follow suit with many of the examples provided you in this book ... Zany Zebra Zingers. You don't need to have a background in sports to enjoy this book. One of the author's concerns is that the reader may take too seriously some of the quotations. It takes a good sense of humor to be a successful official and, if all of us could learn to laugh at ourselves or each other once in a while, we would enjoy the game more as well as appreciate in new ways the role that each of us play in a sporting contest. Robert Frost once commented on his famous poem Stopping By A Woods On A Snowy Evening, "Don't take the poem too far...just enjoy the thought." I would like to respectfully offer his advice reminding all of my readers to have fun with my comments not taking any impressions of criticism or perceived sarcasm "too far." Just enjoy the thought! This collection of Zany Zebra Zingers has taken over thirty-five years to assemble. Additional Between The Stripes books on such topics of Leadership, Communication, Pregames, Supervisors and Observers, Good Officials and Bad Officials are being prepared for publication.

Book excerpt: In Stripes: Design Between the Lines, writer and design expert Linda O’Keeffe explores the lineage of lines as they shape culture, art, and style. The illustrations create a rollicking visual ride while the accompanying text—by turns witty and weighty—shows how these potent, sometimes-charged symbols have even changed the course of world history. The simplest and most ancient of all decorative markings, stripes perpetually fascinate. Natural inspirations in the forms of zebra stripes, rippled sand dunes, and intricately gnarled wood grain have led us to use stripes in every permutation: on human bodies from elaborate woven textiles to the iconic Breton T-shirt to sharp pin-striped suits, in art from the earliest cave paintings to vibrant op art canvases, and in industrial design from World War II–era dazzle battleships to the ubiquitous bar code. Their appeal endures. With over 250 full-color images, Stripes: Design Between the Lines provides a wholly original look at one of the most recognizable patterns of all time. Eight thematic chapters present stripes in every conceivable manifestation, from diabolical to decorative, historic to postmodern. The result is a wonderfully varied visual collage that shows how design-savvy people throughout the ages and recent design stars including Jonathan Adler, Geoffrey Beene, Jamie Drake, Jean Paul Gaultier, Josef Hoffman, Sol LeWitt, Todd Oldham, Alberto Pinto, Giò Ponti, Karim Rashid, David Rockwell, Carolyne Roehm, Paul Smith, and Vivienne Westwood have incorporated stripes into their work and daily lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For sixty years, the United States has supported European integration on a bipartisan basis—not only because this has served European interests, but because it has promoted American interests as well. As core partners in transatlantic efforts to address regional and global economic, political and security challenges, the US and the EU have collaborated critically over the years to make the world a less turbulent place. That is, until the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump. In this era of Brexit and President Trump’s incendiary rhetoric regarding Europe, it has never been more important to understand and defend the EU as a significant and valuable American ally. Written by President Barack Obama’s Ambassador to the European Union, Stars with Stripes provides an analytic yet accessible look at how the US and the EU have worked together effectively on numerous core issues such as trade, the digital economy, climate change and more. In blending humor, personal experience, references to popular culture, and incisive analyses of the major issues and players in the diplomatic relationship between the US and the EU, former Ambassador Anthony Luzzatto Gardner tells an illuminating story of this essential partnership, and provides an exclusive insider look at US/EU diplomacy as well as the Brussels political scene.

Book Tailoring the Emission of Stripe array Diode Lasers with External Cavities to Enable Nonlinear Frequency Conversion

Download or read book Tailoring the Emission of Stripe array Diode Lasers with External Cavities to Enable Nonlinear Frequency Conversion written by Andreas Jechow and published by Universitätsverlag Potsdam. This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A huge number of applications require coherent radiation in the visible spectral range. Since diode lasers are very compact and efficient light sources, there exists a great interest to cover these applications with diode laser emission. Despite modern band gap engineering not all wavelengths can be accessed with diode laser radiation. Especially in the visible spectral range between 480 nm and 630 nm no emission from diode lasers is available, yet. Nonlinear frequency conversion of near-infrared radiation is a common way to generate coherent emission in the visible spectral range. However, radiation with extraordinary spatial temporal and spectral quality is required to pump frequency conversion. Broad area (BA) diode lasers are reliable high power light sources in the near-infrared spectral range. They belong to the most efficient coherent light sources with electro-optical efficiencies of more than 70%. Standard BA lasers are not suitable as pump lasers for frequency conversion because of their poor beam quality and spectral properties. For this purpose, tapered lasers and diode lasers with Bragg gratings are utilized. However, these new diode laser structures demand for additional manufacturing and assembling steps that makes their processing challenging and expensive. An alternative to BA diode lasers is the stripe-array architecture. The emitting area of a stripe-array diode laser is comparable to a BA device and the manufacturing of these arrays requires only one additional process step. Such a stripe-array consists of several narrow striped emitters realized with close proximity. Due to the overlap of the fields of neighboring emitters or the presence of leaky waves, a strong coupling between the emitters exists. As a consequence, the emission of such an array is characterized by a so called supermode. However, for the free running stripe-array mode competition between several supermodes occurs because of the lack of wavelength stabilization. This leads to power fluctuations, spectral instabilities and poor beam quality. Thus, it was necessary to study the emission properties of those stripe-arrays to find new concepts to realize an external synchronization of the emitters. The aim was to achieve stable longitudinal and transversal single mode operation with high output powers giving a brightness sufficient for efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. For this purpose a comprehensive analysis of the stripe-array devices was done here. The physical effects that are the origin of the emission characteristics were investigated theoretically and experimentally. In this context numerical models could be verified and extended. A good agreement between simulation and experiment was observed. One way to stabilize a specific supermode of an array is to operate it in an external cavity. Based on mathematical simulations and experimental work, it was possible to design novel external cavities to select a specific supermode and stabilize all emitters of the array at the same wavelength. This resulted in stable emission with 1 W output power, a narrow bandwidth in the range of 2 MHz and a very good beam quality with M²<1.5. This is a new level of brightness and brilliance compared to other BA and stripe-array diode laser systems. The emission from this external cavity diode laser (ECDL) satisfied the requirements for nonlinear frequency conversion. Furthermore, a huge improvement to existing concepts was made. In the next step newly available periodically poled crystals were used for second harmonic generation (SHG) in single pass setups. With the stripe-array ECDL as pump source, more than 140 mW of coherent radiation at 488 nm could be generated with a very high opto-optical conversion efficiency. The generated blue light had very good transversal and longitudinal properties and could be used to generate biphotons by parametric down-conversion. This was feasible because of the improvement made with the infrared stripe-array diode lasers due to the development of new physical concepts.
