Book excerpt: "In 2016, a businessman so discredited that he could no longer get a casino license or borrow money from an American bank was elected President of the United States of America. How did this happen? It is easy to mock and ridicule Donald Trump as if he is the problem. In fact, he is a symptom of a much larger issue that has been bedeviling the GOP for nearly two decades: an intraparty crackup of massive proportions. By "crackup," I mean a breakdown of the fragile alliances between coalitions within a party that prevents its leaders from developing goals they can deliver on when they control the White House and majorities in the House and Senate. This introductory chapter explains why party crackups are inevitable in a federal system with national money and local primaries. But this is the first time -- for either party - that no group within the party could create a synthesis of old orthodoxies and new realities that altered the party's direction enough to build a new consensus"--

Scott Fitzgerald as a potential partner on a screenplay, novelist and scriptwriter Budd Schulberg was surprised the author was still alive. Book Jews and the American Soul

Download or read book Jews and the American Soul written by Andrew R. Heinze and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Joyce Brothers and Sigmund Freud, Rabbi Harold Kushner and philosopher Martin Buber have in common? They belong to a group of pivotal and highly influential Jewish thinkers who altered the face of modern America in ways few people recognize. So argues Andrew Heinze, who reveals in rich and unprecedented detail the extent to which Jewish values, often in tense interaction with an established Christian consensus, shaped the country's psychological and spiritual vocabulary. Jews and the American Soul is the first book to recognize the central role Jews and Jewish values have played in shaping American ideas of the inner life. It overturns the widely shared assumption that modern ideas of human nature derived simply from the nation's Protestant heritage. Heinze marshals a rich array of evidence to show how individuals ranging from Erich Fromm to Ann Landers changed the way Americans think about mind and soul. The book shows us the many ways that Jewish thinkers influenced everything from the human potential movement and pop psychology to secular spirituality. It also provides fascinating new interpretations of Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, and Western views of the psyche; the clash among Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish moral sensibilities in America; the origins and evolution of America's psychological and therapeutic culture; the role of Jewish women as American public moralists, and more. A must-read for anyone interested in the contribution of Jews and Jewish culture to modern America.

Book Ringer

  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2019-08-16
  • ISBN : 0822986965
  • Pages : 127 pages

Download or read book Ringer written by Rebecca Lehmann and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ringer approaches womanhood from two directions: an examination of ways that women’s identities are tied to domestic spaces, like homes, cars, grocery stores, and daycare centers; and a consideration of physical, sexual, and political violence against women, both historically and in the present day. Lehmann’s poems look outward, and go beyond cataloguing trespasses against women by biting back against patriarchal systems of oppression, and against perpetrators of violence against women. Many poems in Ringer are ecopoetical, functioning in a “junk” or “sad” pastoral mode, inhabiting abandoned, forgotten, and sometimes impoverished landscapes of rural America.

Book Emails From the Year 2001

Download or read book Emails From the Year 2001 written by Andreas Daniel Fogg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society’s interest in the preservation of persistent social problems; That society or cultures often have an unspoken, often unrecognized interest and some sort of gratification from the continued existence of most persistent and loudly decried social and economic even political problems. Since this appears to be the case, one way of attempting to solve such problems is to attempt to articulate or otherwise indicate which specific interests and needs are being served as a result of society’s ongoing inability to formulate or agree upon any specific course of legislation, policy making, or even some sort of specific discourse whose utilization might lay the groundwork for some sort of improvement. Consider the possibility that humanity might, while engaging in ever more efficient and less expensive modes of computerization and automation, effectively destroy real human economic activity. The possibility exists that as human “work” comes to be defined as ever less efficient and necessary for the production of goods and services, that real people will begin to be paid less and less. Eventually, however, humanity’s ability to purchase these ever more mechanized goods and services will begin to be seriously depleted. So that a point could theoretically arrive when a vast plethora of goods and services would be available for sale, however, the numbers of available purchasers would be constantly diminishing to the point where civility would begin to disappear, theft would become rampant. The scene would not be pretty.

Book The Mirror

  • Author : Moses Oyekunle Sowale
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-08-26
  • ISBN : 109800762X
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book The Mirror written by Moses Oyekunle Sowale and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing who you are is crucial to wholeness; the loss of identity is the foundation of dehumanization. The modern-day epidemic of absentee fathers has created an identity crisis for the present generation. The loss of identity created by fathers who cannot adequately play their Godgiven roles in the lives of their children has culminated in the display of anger, bitterness, anxiety, domestic violence, and the public unrest that we witness daily in today's society. This book is an attempt to create a lasting fundamental, cultural, biblical, and spiritual solution that can fill in the vacuum. I have approached the topic, borrowing insight from an adage in my traditional Yoruba culture, which says, "Iya ni Wura, Baba ni Digi." This proverb depicts a mother as a piece of gold and a father as a mirror. What is the genealogy of a mirror? If fathers are mirrors, where do we turn to behold ourselves when the mirror is broken? How can a shattered mirror be restored? I was moved and impressed by the poignant and passionate account of Fr. Moses' experience of family, ancestral and present, whose cultural idealism so strongly and positively impacted his life. Children animate the gift of acceptance, "mirrored" in the life of Fr. Moses. He has shown the embodiment of that unconditional acceptance, as well as the strength affirmation he shows toward his peers, past and present. The grace of critical distance makes this possible. Bless you Moses for showing us your heart ~ Rev. Noble F. Scheepers Jesus tells us that we "are the light of the world." In The Mirror, Fr. Sowale brings us into a deeper understanding of how we, as lights, enable others to see themselves and how their light helps us to see ourselves. We are like mirrors, reflecting our own light and the light shown by others. We also, reflect in our lives, and see reflected from others, the light of God, the Father of us all. ~ Rev. Philip J. Kuhn The mirror is a book that has taken difficult questions of life and attempted to walk anyone through the journey of tackling these questions, using thought provoking questions. This is a book that will make you love who God has created you to be, it will help you get into alignment with your soul and celebrate where you are on your journey. Thank you Reverend Sowale for this powerfully articulated guide ~ Adekunle Afolabi
