Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY RT BOOK REVIEWS Sure to thrill readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Molly O’Keefe’s sizzling series cranks up the tension as a bad boy rides into town on his motorcycle—and teaches the girl next door to lose control when it comes to desire. After years of running, Wyatt Svenson has now parked himself in Bishop, Arkansas, trying to do the right thing and parent a son he didn’t even know he had until recently. Over six feet tall and packed with muscles and power, Ty likes to get his hands dirty, fixing his motorcycle at night and keeping his mind away from the mistakes he’s made. Then his pretty neighbor shows up on his driveway, doesn’t bother to introduce herself, and complains about the noise. First impression? She should loosen up. Funny that she turns out to be his son’s elementary school art teacher—and the only one willing to help his troubled boy. Ty needs her. In more ways than one. Though Shelby Monroe is safe in her structured life, she is drawn to Ty’s bad-boy edge and rugged sexuality. What if she just lets it all go: her worries about her mother, her fear of heartbreak, and her tight self control? What if she grabs Ty and takes a ride on the wild side? “What if” becomes reality—intense, exhilarating . . . and addictive. But Ty wants more than a secret affair. He wants it all with Shelby. But will she take a chance and open her heart? Ty is determined to convince Shelby to take the biggest risk of her life: on him. Praise for Between the Sheets “Phenomenal . . . The story is deep, complex, and rich, with emotional tones of hope, loss, regret, pain, and so many flavors of love.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “The characters are genuine, their stories are authentic and there is a rawness of emotion that is completely unexpected. The chemistry Ty and Shelby share is electric and their sex scenes are sizzling on a whole new level. Between the Sheets did what great books should do and let me live beside these people of Bishop and come to care about them. A lot.”—The Best Reviews “An intense, heartbreaking and poignant novel that is also insanely hot and incredibly passionate . . . another powerful novel of love and healing by Molly O’Keefe that old and new fans of the Boys of Bishop series do not want to miss.”—Book Reviews & More by Kathy

Book Searching for a Corporate Savior

Download or read book Searching for a Corporate Savior written by Rakesh Khurana and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate CEOs are headline news. Stock prices rise and fall at word of their hiring and firing. Business media debate their merits and defects as if individual leaders determined the health of the economy. Yet we know surprisingly little about how CEOs are selected and dismissed or about their true power. This is the first book to take us into the often secretive world of the CEO selection process. Rakesh Khurana's findings are surprising and disturbing. In recent years, he shows, corporations have increasingly sought CEOs who are above all else charismatic, whose fame and force of personality impress analysts and the business media, but whose experience and abilities are not necessarily right for companies' specific needs. The labor market for CEOs, Khurana concludes, is far less rational than we might think. Khurana's findings are based on a study of the hiring and firing of CEOs at over 850 of America's largest companies and on extensive interviews with CEOs, corporate board members, and consultants at executive search firms. Written with exceptional clarity and verve, the book explains the basic mechanics of the selection process and how hiring priorities have changed with the rise of shareholder activism. Khurana argues that the market for CEOs, which we often assume runs on cool calculation and the impersonal forces of supply and demand, is culturally determined and too frequently inefficient. Its emphasis on charisma artificially limits the number of candidates considered, giving them extraordinary leverage to demand high salaries and power. It also raises expectations and increases the chance that a CEO will be fired for failing to meet shareholders' hopes. The result is corporate instability and too little attention to long-term strategy. The book is a major contribution to our understanding of corporate culture and the nature of markets and leadership in general.

Book The Other Half of Macroeconomics and the Fate of Globalization

Download or read book The Other Half of Macroeconomics and the Fate of Globalization written by Richard C. Koo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a new perspective from the ‘other half’ of macroeconomics The failure of the vast majority of economists in government, academia and the private sector to predict either the post-2008 Great Recession or the degree of its severity has raised serious credibility issues for the profession. The repeated failures of central banks and other policymakers in all advanced countries to meet their inflation or growth targets in spite of astronomical monetary easing, have left the public rightfully suspicious of the establishment and its economists. The Other Half of Macroeconomics and the Fate of Globalization elucidates what was missing in economics all along and what changes are needed to make the profession relevant to the economic challenges of today. Once the other half of macroeconomics is understood both as a post-bubble phenomenon and as a phase of post-industrial economies, it should be possible for policy makers to devise appropriate measures to overcome difficulties advanced countries are facing today such as stagnation and income inequality. • Shows how it’s possible to devise appropriate policy response to slow wage and productivity growth in these economies • Demonstrates that the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policy changes as an economy undergoes different stages of development • Argues that tax rules, regulations and even educational system must be revised to match the need of pursued (by emerging nations) countries • Explains the 200-year process of economic development and where that process is taking all of us Inside, Richard C. Koo offers a completely new way of looking at the economic predicament of advanced countries today.

Download or read book Transformational CEOs written by Kimio Kase and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is hard to imagine a more enticing topic: why some Japanese firms succeeded in the 1990s despite an economy that failed. The answers are both common sense - operational effectiveness and CEO leadership - and Japan specific - break with traditions. The lessons about leadership, in particular, have wider relevance for leaders, managers, consultants and academics.' - Andrew Campbell, Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, UK Transformational CEOs questions why some Japanese firms succeeded in the 1990s despite an economy that failed - regardless of the burst of the 'bubble' economy, a number of Japanese companies have maintained or extended their international leadership in particular sectors. The authors argue that whilst some of the reasons for successes are plain common sense - operational effectiveness and superior CEO leadership - some are Japan-specific and point to a break with traditional leadership rationale.
