Book Between Roxbury and a Hard Place

Download or read book Between Roxbury and a Hard Place written by Gerald Factor and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up during the Great Depression and coping with a father deserting the family is what Gerry faced at the age of seven. His childhood experiences and good luck helped him survive WWII. After a number of humiliations by a neighborhood bully who was much bigger than he, Gerry managed to beat him badly. The reputation seven-year-old Gerry got from that fight meant that he never had another fight the entire several years he lived in that neighborhood. He applied that lesson in the infantry during the war. Josh, an observant Jew, and Gerald became close friends. They discussed precociously every subject imaginable at great length, and by the time he was thirteen, he was an avowed atheist with a very strong philosophy of life. When he was attacked by four anti-semitic hoodlums, he beat them by surprise and the cover of this book gives an unsubtle clue as to how he equalized the fight on the following day. That technique also was used in France where it probably saved his life. Gerry took a course to become a machinist which got him a job at the Charlestown Navy Yard where together with the South Boston Yard, they launched a ship every day. The incredible pace of construction during WWII resulted in many casualties. Gerry nearly died twice. During the summer of '43 at Winthrop Beach he had a love affair with Erna and they became engaged to be married after the war.

Book excerpt: Following the lead of Boston crime-thriller writers, New York Times bestselling author and radio sensation Howie Carr delivers Hard Knocks-a hard-hitting tale of survival, betrayal, deceit, and murder...in other words, a fictional odyssey through the last thirty years of crime in Boston. Jack Reilly, a dodgy ex-Boston cop, is trying to make ends meet as a private investigator. When a client is killed, execution style, Reilly finds himself in a whole world of pain. Someone wants him dead-but why? To find out, Reilly must weed through thirty years of duplicity, corruption, and killing...a web of politicians dirtier than mobsters and criminals nobler than senators. He needs to uncover the dangerous truth behind the bribery, blood, and backdoor deals that define the highest levels of both organized crime and State House politics-before it's too late. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridget" was the Irish immigrant servant girl who worked in American homes from the second half of the nineteenth century into the early years of the twentieth. She is widely known as a pop culture cliché: the young girl who wreaked havoc in middle-class American homes. Now, in the first book-length treatment of the topic, Margaret Lynch-Brennan tells the real story of such Irish domestic servants, providing a richly detailed portrait of their lives and experiences. Drawing on personal correspondence and other primary sources, Lynch-Brennan gives voice to these young Irish women and celebrates their untold contribution to the ethnic history of the United States. In addition, recognizing the interest of scholars in contemporary domestic service, she devotes one chapter to comparing "Bridget’s" experience to that of other ethnic women over time in domestic service in America.

Book The Grasinski Girls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Patrice Erdmans
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2004-08-04
  • ISBN : 0821441612

Download or read book The Grasinski Girls written by Mary Patrice Erdmans and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grasinski Girls were working-class Americans of Polish descent, born in the 1920s and 1930s, who created lives typical of women in their day. They went to high school, married, and had children. For the most part, they stayed home to raise their children. And they were happy doing that. They took care of their appearance and their husbands, who took care of them. Like most women of their generation, they did not join the women’s movement, and today they either reject or shy away from feminism. Basing her account on interviews with her mother and aunts, Mary Erdmans explores the private lives of these white, Christian women in the post-World War II generation. She compares them, at times, to her own postfeminist generation. Situating these women within the religious routines that shaped their lives, Professor Erdmans explores how gender, class, ethnicity, and religion shaped the choices the Grasinski sisters were given as well as the choices they made. These women are both acted upon and actors; they are privileged and disadvantaged; they resist and surrender; they petition the Lord and accept His will. The Grasinski Girls examines the complexity of ordinary lives, exposing privileges taken for granted as well as nuances of oppression often overlooked. Erdmans brings rigorous scholarship and familial insight to bear on the realities of twentieth-century working-class white women in America.

Book This Is Our City

Download or read book This Is Our City written by Tony Massarotti and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of the last two decades of sports success in Boston from the co-host of the #1 sports radio show in New England Boston is a unique sports city. Unlike New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, New Englanders' loyalties are not divided among competing franchises; in the four major American sports, the city has one team each: the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins, and the Patriots. And, as any Boston fan will tell you, that loyalty runs deep. Sports just seem to mean more in New England. Over the last 20 years, those fans have been blessed with an extraordinary run of success, including 12 championships, six runners-up, and many more years of heated contention. In the 21st century, Boston became Titletown. According to Tony Massarotti, longtime Boston sports columnist and host of the #1 sports radio show in New England for the past ten years, this is not a coincidence. Massarotti's This Is Our City paints a portrait of the last 20 years in Boston sports, showing how one team's success has led to the next—how they have fed off each other, tried to one-up one another, and have supported each other. This is an account of an era where successes and failures stitched together the region, all playing out against major events such as 9/11 and the devastating Boston Marathon—which led to a memorably profane speech by David Ortiz, who declared, "This is our f@#king city!" Massarotti's This Is Our City is a valentine to Boston sports and will be loved by those fans, wherever they now live.
