Book excerpt: Like Plato, Emmanuel Levinas believed that ethics was the most fundamental philosophical discipline. Levinas's approach to ethics begins in the encounter with the other as the most basic experience of responsibility. He acknowledges the necessity to move beyond this initial, dyadic encounter, but has problems extending his approach to a larger dimension, such as community. To shed light on this dilemma, Tanja Staehler examines broader dimensions which are linked to the political realm, and the problems they pose for ethics. Staehler demonstrates that both Plato and Levinas come to identify three realms as ambiguous: the erotic, the artistic, and the political. Staehler argues that these ambiguous dimensions can contribute to revealing the Other’s vulnerability without diminishing the fundamental role of unambiguous ethical responsibility.

Book Gift and the Unity of Being

Download or read book Gift and the Unity of Being written by Antonio Lopez and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from both our originary experience of being given to ourselves and Jesus Christ's archetypal self-donation, 'Gift and the Unity of Being' elucidates the sense in which gift is the form of being's unity, while unity itself constitutes the permanence of the gift of being. In dialogue with ancient and modern philosophers and theologians, Lopez offers a synthetic, rather than systematic, account of the unity proper to being, the human person, God, and the relations among them. The book shows how contemplation of the triune God of love through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit allows us to discover the eternal communion that being is and to which finite being is called. It also illustrates the sense in which God's gratuitousness unexpectedly offers thehuman person the possibility to recognize and embrace his origin and destiny, and thus he is given to see and taste in God's light the ever-fruitful, dramatic, and mysterious positivity of being.

Book excerpt: This book begins with a chapter about Sri Aurobindo and the prophetic nature of his opus magnum, Savitri, using references from Carl Jung. I then examine Jungs creation myth, using comparative material form Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. I end with a note on heart-Self centered transformation and one involving spiritual transfiguration. I follow with a discussion on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien from the perspective of the mythical psyche, using comparative material from Jung. I subsequently discuss Jungs take on contemporary religion, Gnosticism and alchemy, along with his encounter with the East. Jung emphasizes the compensatory needs of the Western psyche with prophetic declarations on the psychological and spiritual transformations required for the new aeon. I subsequently examine Jean Gebsers study on the evolution of consciousness, and the demand today to develop an integral structure of consciousness, referring to both Jung, and Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) produced a major body of work in the fields of theology, education, literature, politics, and history. He was also a poet, a hymn-writer, and a translator. In particular, however, it is his educational writings that over the years have attracted international attention from the USA in the west to Japan in the east. In recognition of his influence the European Union called its adult education project the Grundtvig programme. As part of its agenda to digitalise and translate some of this vast output, the Grundtvig Study Centre at the University of Aarhus is pleased to publish this broad selection of Grundtvig's writings on education in a completely new translation. The texts vary in form from poems and songs to articles in periodicals, introductions to books, an open letter to the Norwegians and a private letter to the King of Denmark. These texts, taken together, will provide a solid basis for international scholars without knowledge of Danish to be able to work closely with Grundtvigs ideas on education for the people. The book is accompanied by a CD (MP3 format) with the texts read by Edward Broadbridge and the introductions by Clay Warren.

Book Aspects of the Masculine

Download or read book Aspects of the Masculine written by C.G. Jung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of masculinity was crucial not only to Jung's revolutionary theories of the human psyche, but also to his own personal development. If, as Jung believed, "modern man is already so darkened that nothing beyond the light of his own intellect illuminates his world," then it is essential to show every man the limits of his understanding and how to overcome them. In Aspects of the Masculine Jung does this by revealing his most significant insights concerning the nature and motivations of masculinity, both conscious and unconscious, and explaining how this affects the development of the personality. Offering a unique perspective on the masculine, based upon both his personal and clinical experiences, Jung asks questions that remain as insistent as ever. He offers answers that--whether they surprise, shock or edify--challenge us to re-examine our contemporary understanding of masculinity.
