M. Coetzee takes as its premise J. M. Coetzee’s distinction between “illusionism” and “anti-illusionism”: the realist and the self-reflexive traditions in prose fiction. The aim of this critical study is to demonstrate that these two traditions are not opposed, but rather complementary to each other, and enrich the novel as a genre. Based on Marek Pawlicki’s doctoral thesis, the book is a detailed analysis of Coetzee’s oeuvre, paying particular attention to the impact of the writer’s literary essays on his fiction. Insofar as it looks into the ways in which Coetzee’s work as a critic has affected his novels, this book deals with the relation between fiction and literary criticism. Chapter One is an introduction into the topic of self-reflexivity. Chapters Two to Five, devoted to Dusklands, In the Heart of the Country, Age of Iron and Summertime, are concerned with the issue of subjectivity in confessional discourse and the boundary between fiction and autobiography. Chapters Six to Eight, concentrating on Foe, Slow Man, The Master of Petersburg, and Elizabeth Costello, offer insight into Coetzee’s views on literary creation and the role of the writer in society. Between Illusionism and Anti-Illusionism also examines intertextual references in Coetzee’s novels to the works of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Kafka and Beckett.

Metalepsis describes the transgression of the boundary between the fictional world and (a representation of) the real world. This volume establishes a transmedial definition of metalepsis and explores the phenomenon in twelve case studies across media and genres of popular culture: from film, TV series, animated cartoons, graphic novels and popular fiction to pop music, music videos, holographic projections and fan cultures. Narrative studies have considered metalepsis so far largely as a phenomenon of postmodern or avant-garde literature. Metalepsis in Popular Culture investigates metalepsis’ ties to the popular and traces its transmedial importance through a wealth of examples from the turn of the 20th century to this day. "Never before and in no other country," observes director Wim Wenders, "have images and language been abused so unscrupulously as here, never before and nowhere else have they been debased so deeply as vehicles to transmit lies." More than a thousand German feature films that premiered during the reign of National Socialism survive as mementoes of what many regard as film history's darkest hour. As Eric Rentschler argues, however, cinema in the Third Reich emanated from a Ministry of Illusion and not from a Ministry of Fear. Party vehicles such as Hitler Youth Quex and anti-Semitic hate films such as Jew Süss may warrant the epithet "Nazi propaganda," but they amount to a mere fraction of the productions from this era. The vast majority of the epoch's films seemed to be "unpolitical"--melodramas, biopix, and frothy entertainments set in cozy urbane surroundings, places where one rarely sees a swastika or hears a "Sieg Heil." Minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels, Rentschler shows, endeavored to maximize film's seductive potential, to cloak party priorities in alluring cinematic shapes. Hitler and Goebbels were master showmen enamored of their media images, the Third Reich was a grand production, the Second World War a continuing movie of the week. The Nazis were movie mad, and the Third Reich was movie made. Rentschler's analysis of the sophisticated media culture of this period demonstrates in an unprecedented way the potent and destructive powers of fascination and fantasy. Nazi feature films--both as entities that unreeled in moviehouses during the regime and as productions that continue to enjoy wide attention today--show that entertainment is often much more than innocent pleasure.
