Book excerpt: Siberia has no history of independent political existence, no claim to a separate ethnic identity, and no clear borders. Yet, it could be said that the elusive country 'behind the Urals' is the most real and the most durable part of the Russian landscape. For centuries, Siberia has been represented as Russia's alter ego,as the heavenly or infernal antithesis to the perceived complexity or shallowness of Russian life. It has been both the frightening heart of darkness and a fabulous land of plenty; the 'House of the Dead' and the realm of utter freedom; a frozen wasteland and a colourful frontier; a dumping ground for Russia's rejects and the last refuge of its lost innocence. The contributors to Between Heaven and Hell examine the origin, nature, and implications of these images from historical, literary, geographical, anthropological, and linguistic perspectives. They create a striking, fascinating picture of this enormous and mysterious land.

Book The War Between Heaven and Hell

Download or read book The War Between Heaven and Hell written by Saint Larius and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Larius is an evangelical Christian and has ministered in Christian and secular venues. For several years, he was the host of a weekend radio show, and a co-host of a morning drive time show. Over three decades, he was affiliated with three major international ministries, pastored two churches, and is involved in marketplace ministry. "Larius" was born in America but has traveled to many countries of the world. Formerly an experienced sinner, but the love and grace of God touched his life and changed everything. He grew up belonging to a denominational church. A dramatic change came in his life during a time of great illness when he was miraculously healed, born again, and filled with the Holy Spirit. Prayer is the key to daily strength, guidance, and the miracles in Saint Larius' life. Being a guest speaker at a large church, one of the Church staff members said she saw two huge angels standing next to Saint Larius, one on the left and one on the right while he was speaking. When asked to pray for a lady in Hong Kong who was sick and had a fever, Saint Larius laid hands on her and prayed. According to the lady's testimony, she saw Jesus walk into the room and touch her; the fever left immediately, and she was healed. After a casual dinner and time of ministering to a U.S. Military Colonel and his wife, the officer said, "I feel like I've been in the presence of a General." Saint Larius is a loving, caring, down-to-earth, humorous and enthusiastic person, with a common-sense approach to life, the scriptures, and in his worldview. Book Journeys to Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Journeys to Heaven and Hell written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times best-selling scholar's illuminating exploration of the earliest Christian narrated journeys to heaven and hell “[An] illuminating deep dive . . . An edifying origin story for contemporary Christian conceptions of the afterlife.”—Publishers Weekly From classics such as the Odyssey and the Aeneid to fifth-century Christian apocrypha, narratives that described guided tours of the afterlife played a major role in shaping ancient notions of morality and ethics. In this new account, acclaimed author Bart Ehrman contextualizes early Christian narratives of heaven and hell within the broader intellectual and cultural worlds from which they emerged. He examines how fundamental social experiences of the early Christian communities molded the conceptions of the afterlife that eventuated into the accepted doctrines of heaven, hell, and purgatory. Drawing on Greek and Roman epic poetry, early Jewish writings such as the Book of Watchers, and apocryphal Christian stories including the Acts of Thomas, the Gospel of Nicodemus, and the Apocalypse of Peter, Ehrman demonstrates that ancient tours of the afterlife promoted reflection on matters of ethics, faith, ambition, and life’s meaning, the fruit of which has been codified into Christian belief today.

Book Visions of Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Visions of Heaven and Hell written by John Bunyan and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the wicked have traveled a course of sin, and discover they have reason to fear the God;s judgement and wrath for their sins, they begin to wish there is no God to punish them, then by degrees they persuade themselves there is no God, and then they set themselves to study the arguments to support their opinion. This excellent book by John Bunyan covers the subject matter of the existence of heaven and hell as well as studies and dispells the arguments presented by sinners who argue there is no heaven and hell. Most do not know that Bunyan wrote some 60 books, and poetry too. And also almost a well-kept secret is that his doctrine was so biblically laced that many good men would call him too severe. He believed in, and taught, ALL the doctrines of grace, including double-predestination, or reprobation. Why then is he not smeared with the name of hyper-Calvinist like Goodwin, Gill, and others? I guess the same people ought to call Luther a hyper-Lutheran, for he believed and taught it, too. Why begin a review of Bunyan's writings with such a view of his doctrine? It is to show that a Pilgrim's Progress can come only from someone who believes and teaches ALL the counsel of God, without flinching, yea, with loving-kindness. Illegally, He sat in a jail cell over a river for 12 years with his Bible, Galatians by Luther, and another book or two. He had the choice of feeling miserable and murmuring, or of filling his time, thoughts, and energies with studying that Bible, and seeking a way to be of help to his more comfortable, but less dedicated, brothers and sisters. Listen, dear saints, you can't do any better than reading Bunyan. Like Gurnall, he covers everything here and there, and with a sweetness that can come only from God. What a shame that his large heart should be encased in such small print. But, like digging gold, it is worth the time and trouble to dig spiritual gold. Bunyan (1628-1688) rose from an humble beginning to being a preacher to a little house church, to 12 years in jail because he would not agree to quit preaching, to a huge church in London. He wrote 66 books, nearly all while in jail.
