Download or read book Human Fetal Tissue Transplantation written by Niranjan Bhattacharya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many diseases earlier considered to be incurable are now being treated with modern innovations involving fetal tissue transplants and stem cells derived from fetal tissues. Fetal tissues are the richest source of fetal stem cells as well as other varying states of differentiated cells and support or stromal cells. The activity of such stem cells is at their peak provided they are given the correct niche. Stem cells, as we know, are immortal cells with the capacity to regenerate into any kind of differentiated cell as per niche-guidance. As such, fetal tissues have the potential capacity to mend, regenerate and repair damaged cells or tissues in adults, when directly transplanted to the site of injury, or even when transplanted in some other site, because it may have a homing capacity to migrate to the site of the specific injured organ. This is a new area of translational research and needs to be highlighted because of its immense potential. This book will bring together the new work of prominent medical scientists and clinicians who are conducting pioneering research in human fetal tissue transplantation. This will include direct transplant of healthy fetal tissue into mature patients as well as in hosts with genetic diseases. Transplant techniques, donor-host interaction, cell and tissue storage, ethical and legal issues, are some of the many matters which the book will deal with.

Download or read book Peripheral Nerve Disorders written by Gérard Said and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are the cause of prominent neurological symptoms including weakness, sensory loss, pain and autonomic dysfunction associated with deficits, morbidity and mortality. These disorders may be primary hereditary or cryptogenic neurologic disorders confined to the PNS or part of the pathology of both the central nervous system and the PNS. Most PNS disorders are secondary to other system disorders and may be responsive to treatment of the primary disease. Important advances have been obtained in several areas including molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology that have enhanced our understanding of the causes and consequences of damage to peripheral nerve. Understanding of both these groups of PNS diseases has greatly expanded over recent years and has led to important advances of treatment both to protect and to repair damages of peripheral nerve. This volume provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of examination, diagnosis and treatment of these very diverse disorders and will be of interest to both the research and clinical neuroscience and neurology communities. Covers both hereditary and cryptogenic neurologic disorders Includes advances in the basic science of PNS from molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology Detailed coverage of neuropathy in connective tissue disorders, infectious disorders, metabolic disorders and malignancy

Book excerpt: Current Legal Issues, like its sister volume Current Legal Problems, is based upon an annual colloquium held at University College London. Each year, leading scholars from around the world gather to discuss the relationship between law and another discipline of thought. Each colloquium examines how the external discipline is conceived in legal thought and argument, how the law is pictured in that discipline, and analyses points of controversy in the use, and abuse, of extra-legal arguments within legal theory and practice. Law and Bioethics, the latest volume in the Current Legal Issues series, contains a broad range of essays by scholars interested in the interactions between law and bioethics. It includes studies examining the regulation of stem cell research, human rights and bioethics, the regulation of reproductive technologies, and distributive justice in healthcare and pandemic planning.

Download or read book Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord written by Julien Cohen-Adad and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord is the first book focused on quantitative MRI techniques with specific application to the human spinal cord. This work includes coverage of diffusion-weighted imaging, magnetization transfer imaging, relaxometry, functional MRI, and spectroscopy. Although these methods have been successfully used in the brain for the past 20 years, their application in the spinal cord remains problematic due to important acquisition challenges (such as small cross-sectional size, motion, and susceptibility artifacts). To date, there is no consensus on how to apply these techniques; this book reviews and synthesizes state-of-the-art methods so users can successfully apply them to the spinal cord. Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord introduces the theory behind each quantitative technique, reviews each theory's applications in the human spinal cord and describes its pros and cons, and suggests a simple protocol for applying each quantitative technique to the spinal cord. - Chapters authored by international experts in the field of MRI of the spinal cord - Contains "cooking recipes—examples of imaging parameters for each quantitative technique—designed to aid researchers and clinicians in using them in practice - Ideal for clinical settings
Download or read book Serial Killers written by Richard Estep and published by Visible Ink Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain, torment, and torture. Cruelty, brutality, and violence. The twisted psyches, murder. and yes, even the ability to charm people. Take a deep dive into the terrifyingly real serial murderers, spree killers, and true faces of evil! They prey on the innocent with a malicious desire to inflict damage and harm. They hunt and stalk misfortunate victims in the dark, in broad daylight, in quiet neighborhoods, and in the local woods. Their bloodthirst isn't satisfied after their first kill. Or their second. Or third. Serial Killers: The Minds, Methods, and Mayhem of History's Most Notorious Murderers delves into the global phenomenon of serial and spree murderers. This chilling book looks at the horrifying stories of forty malevolent killers and hundreds of innocent victims, including such notorious homicidal maniacs as John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Jeffery Dahmer, but it also looks at lesser-known and overlooked murderers like Herbert Baumeister, America’s I-70 Strangler; Japan’s “Anime Killer,” Tsutomu Miyazaki; Russia’s “Rostov Ripper,” Andrei Chikatilo; the “Giggling Granny,” Nannie Doss; and many more. It journeys to 16th-century Scotland to meet a clan of cannibals whose existence is still debated by historians today, and to the fog-shrouded alleys of Whitechapel, London, where Jack the Ripper earned his grisly namesake. Along the way, we’ll meet the Dating Game Killer, the Milwaukee Cannibal, the Acid Bath Murderer, and other monsters. Serial Killers also asks the questions ... What makes a seemingly ordinary person stalk, torture, and murder their fellow human beings? Are serial killers born or made? What is the difference between a serial killer and a spree killer? What were the identities of Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer? Was Albert DeSalvo really the Boston Strangler? Is it possible that you could know a serial killer? Caution is advised before entering the alarming world of twisted psychos and sociopaths! With more than 120 photos and graphics, this fright-filled tome is richly illustrated. Its helpful bibliography and extensive index add to its usefulness.

Download or read book Serial Killer Quote of the Day written by johnny trevisani and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will send chills up and down your spine. You've heard that before, but in this case, it's true. Here, you will see for yourself how a serial killer's mind works. You will hear them, in their own words, describe their despicable deeds. And you will learn how to kill someone without remorse, and even with a sense of fun and enjoyment. Over the past five years, johnny trevisani (no caps, by the way - all lowercase), has compiled the most extensive collection of serial killer quotes, certainly on the web, and probably on Earth. It offers a bizarre and disturbing glimpse into the warped minds of people who kill, and kill, and kill again. For the first time, trevisani's opus, the Serial Killer Quote of the Day, is available as an ebook. It offers you a year's worth of psychotic ramblings, lame justifications, and blow-by-blow descriptions of terrible crimes and the worst behavior of which humans are capable. You will be amazed, horrified, and fascinated. You may find the thoughts expressed uncomfortably similar to your own. You may dip into this book each morning, finding inspiration in nightmarish acts and deranged flights of fancy. You may stay up late at night, and read the whole thing in one sitting. The people in these pages are mass murderers, kidnappers, rapists and child molesters, mad bombers, necrophiliacs and cannibals. Some are totally insane, suffering from paranoid delusions. Some are all too normal, at least on the surface. They all destroyed countless lives - not just of the people they killed, but of the family and friends who lost their loved ones. These serial killers shoot people, stab them, strangle them, beat them to death, even blow them up. Sometimes they capture their victims and keep them alive for days, using them for sex, torturing them, toying with them the way a cat toys with a mouse. To these maniacs, murder is a compulsion, an addiction, an entertaining diversion, and sometimes just a means to an end. The monsters represented here include: - Jeffrey Dahmer - John Wayne Gacy - Charles Manson - The Son of Sam - Aileen Wuornos And more than 100 others. Check out these sample quotes: "I remember being told as a kid, you cut off the head and the body dies. The body is nothing after the head is cut off. Well, that's not quite true. With a girl, there's a lot left in the girl's body without a head. Of course, the personality is gone." - Ed Kemper ----- "I know it ain't normal for a person to go out and kill a girl just to have sex with her." - Henry Lee Lucas ----- "What's one less person on the face of the Earth, anyway?" - Ted Bundy ----- Each daily quote is accompanied by a mugshot, the number of people that killer is thought to have murdered, the years the killer was active, and the location. Each entry is also accompanied by a fact about the killer's life, giving you a dark look into the events that shape minds like these. And every month, there is a "Serial Killer of the Month." That killer is profiled more in-depth, presenting an intimate, up close and personal portrayal of someone you would never want to meet in real life. These serial killers will charm you. They will make you laugh. They will also terrify you. You will want to kill them yourself. You will wish that before they died, they had suffered more than they did. You will be outraged at the ones who are still alive, living it up in prison. Or worse, the ones who were let go, or escaped, and have since disappeared. And the ones who were never caught? They will make your skin crawl. If you are a person who enjoys true crime, as spoken by the people who did it, Serial Killer Quote of the Day is for you.
