When we got to the crossroads I suggested that we have a race to the pike. I'd take one road and Dickie'd take the other. Dickie didn't like the idea of our parting, but I teased so sweetly that he agreed. I took the shortest road - the one that also turns off to that short cut home, and away I trotted Brownie back to his little stable! Jordon. While the poor deluded Mr. Russel is still waiting for his lady at the pike. Taking all in all, Miss Barton, it really is a misfortune for a man to be your fiancé. Betty. Wouldn't you like to be my fiancé, Jordon? (She smiles up at him.) Jordon (severely). Don't you think it's unfair for you to ask me questions that are impossible for me to answer?
