Wu Wei has added his enlightened comments to these sayings to help us apply the practical, timeless wisdom of the I Ching to our lives. The wisdom of the I Ching reveals the universal laws that govern us all, and I Ching Wisdom shows us how to live in harmony with those laws to live a life of peace, love, happiness, prosperity, and success. The I Ching’s invaluable insights, says Wu Wei, help us steer a safer, clearer course through the uncharted journey of our lives, teach us to recognize and avoid the pitfalls that beset the path of the unenlightened, and show us how to “soar to the heights of success and good fortune." Each saying is accompanied by a delightful Chinese ink drawing done in the Zen style by the author.

Download or read book Hyperbole and a Half written by Allie Brosh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book Better Than We Found It

Download or read book Better Than We Found It written by Darrell Park and published by Better Than We Found It. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be required reading for anyone who cares about America. Better Than We Found It is a voice of reason and common sense in the cacophony of indignant tirades that saturate the media. If you're looking for a balanced source of simple solutions for the problems we face today, read this book. Solutions abound, from the obvious to the outlandish. With each new chapter you might find yourself asking "Why don't we do this already?" As refreshing as he is irreverent, Park demystifies the challenges facing our nation and identifies the tools and methods - that often already exist - with which we can solve them. This book includes thoughtful and straight forward solutions for problems as diverse as government and military reform, understanding how our country is financed, improving our education system, making our tax system fair, youth mentors, immigration, making high speed rail as convenient as air travel, middle east peace, homelessness, green energy, making electric cars mainstream, enabling average people make to make money from the sun and wind, using the census to make democracy stronger, and even reducing head injuries in football and making the game more athletic by rethinking helmets. Some of the ideas like National Service, and full democracy for American citizens living in Washington, DC are as old as our country, and others such as offering tax breaks for losing weight are on the cutting edge of policy debates. Using airport security to catch actual criminals, implementing logical gun rules, getting solar panels on every rooftop, preventing genocide, labeling our news sources like we label our food, securing our food supply, and preparing communities for emergencies, and bringing personal responsibility to heath care, are all monumental problems that have logical and implementable solutions. This book provides a straight forward and enjoyable approach to improving the world around us, making it clear how each of us can play a significant role in fixing those things that are broken. Better Than We Found It brings clarity to our problems and offers thoughtful solutions to fix what ails us. And, although some of these ideas carry big price tags like doubling the budget of every public school or expanding the Peace Corps to 100,000 volunteers, a surprising number cost little or nothing. Good government doesn't have to be pricey, and some ideas, like turning the Post Office into a bank for those without one, can even bring in a little revenue to our great country while improving people's lives. Other ideas such as the need to honestly assess our history and to fix the ten worst-performing states are painfully obvious, with not so obvious solutions. Some ideas, like training soldiers and aid workers together or preventing genocide by putting someone in charge of preventing it, can save thousands or even millions of lives, we just need to do our part to make it happen. Better Than We Found It will make you realize that America's problems can and will be fixed by ordinary people who care about their country. And it does not take that much time or effort. You don't need to quit your job or sell all of your possessions to make our country better than we found it, you just need to read this book and pick an issue or two that you care about.

Book excerpt: Men today have locked horns with their toughest issue: reclaiming the full potential of manhood. But in the midst of the excitement -- the meetings, rallies, seminars, and high-fives -- is something vital missing? What gives manhood definition and meaning? In The Silence of Adam, Dr. Larry Crabb and his colleagues, biblical scholar Don Hudson and counselor Al Andrews, offer a fresh look at how God designed men. They draw from neglected biblical data and their own professional experience to help us explore - manhood's lost vision - the problems of masculine community - the power of mentoring relationships -- The Silence of Adam deals thoughtfully and honestly with men's ongoing struggles and exposes the difficulties they have in relationships. It presents the rich calling men have to reveal God in ways uniquely masculine. And it summons them beyond their paralyzing fear of failure to bold risk-taking, action, deep spirituality, and full-hearted living.

Book Your Mountain Is Waiting

  • Author : Bill Nussey
  • Publisher : Mountain Ambler Publishing
  • Release : 2019-02-22
  • ISBN : 9781732544604
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Your Mountain Is Waiting written by Bill Nussey and published by Mountain Ambler Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is full of books with catchy, earnest prescriptions on creating a happier and more successful life. However, most of these merely fly over a landscape of positive habits, rarely diving into the challenges or the reasoning behind them. Your Mountain Is Waiting is different. It's easy-to-read, clich -free and filled with relatable stories and practical advice. It goes beyond WHAT to do and explains WHY and HOW. It's about finding your purpose, taking the initiative, having fun, building lasting friendships, bouncing back from failure, and making the most of your life. If you are searching for your mission in life or seeking a success more rewarding than money or titles, Your Mountain Is Waiting is the book for you. The book was written for Nussey's sons who were graduating from high school and college. But it's just as valuable for anyone of any age, from young professionals to retirees, that want to find meaning and fulfillment in their lives. It is the perfect graduation gift. Excerpts from the book: Missions are like compasses. They set your direction and help you find your way when the trail ahead isn't clear. Author Laurence J. Peter said, "If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else." Stuff happens. Situations change. The trails of life are full of deep holes, sharp sticks and dead ends. The point is that a small amount of preparation can help you avoid huge hassles. So, if you want to be a bit more prepared for the unexpected, here are a few tips that have worked for me... Adventures change us. Acquaintances become lifelong friends. Courage eclipses fear. Perseverance conquers apathy. If even for just a little while, adventures help us become the best versions of ourselves. Making the world a better place is the rent payment for your visit here on planet earth One of the great lessons I've learned about failure comes from cats. Have you ever seen a cat go running across a wooden floor, lose its footing, and crash into a wall? The great thing about cats is that they get right back up, shake it off, and look at you as if to say, "Yeah, I meant to do that." We should all fail with that much confidence.

Book Transforming Nature

Download or read book Transforming Nature written by Michael E. Gorman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-02-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is but the draft of a draft, as Melville said of Moby Dick. There is no prose here to match Melville's, but the scope is worthy of the great white whale. No one could possibly write a comprehensive, authoritative book on ethics, invention and discovery. I have not tried to, though I hope my bibliography will be a useful starting point for other explorers, and the cases and ideas presented here will keep people arguing for years. Although this book is nothing like a textbook, it is written for my students. I was trained as a teacher of psychology in graduate school and ended-up, by one of those happy chances of the job market, teaching psychology to engineering students rather than psyche majors. My dissertation and early research were in the psychology of scientific hypothesis-testing (see Chapter 2). When I team-taught a course with W. Bernard Carlson, a historian of technology, I saw how cognitive psychology might be applied to the study of invention. Bernie and I received funding from the National Science Foundation for three years of research on the invention of the telephone; a portion of that work is described in Chapter 3.

Book It s Better Than It Looks

Download or read book It s Better Than It Looks written by Gregg Easterbrook and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is civilization teetering on the edge of a cliff? Or are we just climbing higher than ever? Most people who read the news would tell you that 2017 is one of the worst years in recent memory. We're facing a series of deeply troubling, even existential problems: fascism, terrorism, environmental collapse, racial and economic inequality, and more. Yet this narrative misses something important: by almost every meaningful measure, the modern world is better than it ever has been. In the United States, disease, crime, discrimination, and most forms of pollution are in long-term decline, while longevity and education keep rising and economic indicators are better than in any past generation. Worldwide, malnutrition and extreme poverty are at historic lows, and the risk of dying by war or violence is the lowest in human history. It's not a coincidence that we're confused -- our perspectives on the world are blurred by the rise of social media, the machinations of politicians, and our own biases. Meanwhile, political reforms like the Clean Air Act and technological innovations like the hybridization of wheat have saved huge numbers of lives. In that optimistic spirit, Easterbrook offers specific policy reforms to address climate change, inequality, and other problems, and reminds us that there is real hope in conquering such challenges. In an age of discord and fear-mongering, It's Better Than It Looks will profoundly change your perspective on who we are, where we're headed, and what we're capable of.
