Book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Rural Schools The rural school presents the most important problem in American education. In it are more than six million children coming from one great industry, agriculture the most fundamental and important of all industries. Under present conditions this occupation calls for an unusual degree of intelligence and skill. It demands the highest type of business management and industrial ability. And with the success of agriculture is linked the welfare of every American citizen, whatever be his status or vocation. Yet the rural school, the sole educational opportunity of most of our agricultural population, has been grossly neglected. In the midst of universal progress, it has been allowed to lag behind town and city schools. Abandoned to relative inefficiency, it has failed to hold the loyalty and) support of its constituency. The victim of changing social and industrial conditions, it has dwindled in size, diminished in influence, and lost step with the spirit of the times. The modern industrial city, with its peculiar patho logical conditions, has commanded both public and professional interest, but the rural com munity and the rural school have been neglected. Indeed, in many respects, rural life and rural institutions have lost ground. Relatively speak ing, they are not so efficient as they once were. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Centralized Graded and Model Schools: 1918 To The Reader: This bulletin has been compiled and issued in the interest of better rural school conditions. It deals principally with the subject of consolidated and union graded schools and should be studied carefully by all teachers, school board members, and patrons who are interested in making the rural schools of this state more efficient. It is not our purpose to urge the consolidation of schools against the wishes of the people in any community. On the other hand, we advise that unless a community can act in peace and harmony it would be better to let the schools remain as they are. We believe that a close study of this bulletin, in which we have set forth the advantages of consolidation the plan of organization and the results obtained in many of the consolidated schools, will create a desire to provide better advantages for the boys and girls now attending rural schools. We have endeavored to give you the best information obtainable from other states, in addition to the experience which we have had in our own state, on this subject. We fully realize that some course must be taken by which we can give to the boys and girls in the rural districts high school advantages. To send them to town for an education means not only to educate them away from the farm (home?) but, in many instances, to educate them under conditions very much to their disliking. We do not contend that it is not best to send the children to high school in the town or city when there is no other high school for them to attend. The reverse is true. But we do contend that a rural high school conducted entirely for the benefit of rural pupils is far more efficient and desirable for farm boys and girls than a town high school. During my first administration, the Legislature appropriated $100,000 to encourage consolidated schools. This was exhausted, and the last Legislature appropriated $175,000 for the benefit of consolidated and union graded schools. This money is available when the conditions prescribed by law are met. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the Open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, per cent Of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Download or read book Successful Teaching in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by Marvin Summers Pittman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School, 1922: Survey, of New York State Educational Achievement The report of this section of the survey is distinctive for the following reasons: It furnishes an excellent illustration of the value of standardized tests in the study of schools. The facts that have been secured with reference to the reading situation in the rural schools of the State should be invaluable to administrative and supervisory officers and they should also arouse teachers and patrons to the need of securing more adequate results from the work of the schools in this subject. Reading is of basic importance. Not only does it condition progress in other school subjects, but deficiency in it may be a barrier to the intelligent discharge of the duties of citizenship. The elementary school has no more important subject to offer the children and the results should be better than are now being obtained. The use of the intelligence and standardized tests with such large numbers of pupils through so many grades, and in all sections of the State, should furnish valuable data for those who are interested in the relative effectiveness of rural and urban schools. The survey of the rural schools of New York State and the printing of this report were made possible through a grant from the Commonwealth Fund. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Rural Schools in Travis County, Texas The purpose of this investigation is to make an accurate and scientific estimate of the status of public education in about two hundred square miles of the southeastern part of Travis County. By making a close survey of this area and reporting it to the public in the following pages, it is hoped that other communities similarly situated will be assisted in finding where they stand educationally. This report is intended to serve as a simple, direct sort of guide whereby a rural community may conduct a self-examination into its school affairs, determining its points of greatest strength and revealing its sources of greatest weakness. It is a method of attack by examination and diagnosis before the issuance of a prescription or other remedial measure. This study has been presented as one chapter of a thesis offered in part fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the University of Texas, and its publication in this form ahead of the completion of the thesis has been allowed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Ideals in Rural Schools IN presenting a second monograph on the rural school problem in this series we register our sense of the importance of rural education. Too long have the rural schools suffered from neg lect. Both the local communities and the State have overlooked the needs of the rural school system. At the present hour there is an earnest awakening of interest in rural life and its insti tutions. Already there is a small but certain movement of people toward the country and the vocation of agriculture. A period of agricultu ral prosperity, the reaction of men and women against the artificialities of city life, the devel Opment of farming through the application of science, and numerous other factors have made country life more congenial and have focused attention upon its further needs. It is natural, therefore, that the rural school should receive an increased share of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education: A Complete Course of Study for Modern Rural Schools The average reader omits the preface of a book and seldom reads the appendix. Hence, much of what might properly be placed in these divisions has been included in the regular chapters. Most books of this kind are of very general nature. Our purpose is to supplement those already available with more definite suggestions and outlines for programs and courses of study not only for the academic work, but also for the so-called industrial work, some of which is now demanded in nearly every community. During the last few years education has assumed new aspects, which are reflected from the courses of study. The answers of students and parents as to what constitutes an education and why certain courses are pursued are interest ing. Usually the laboring man wishes his children to be educated so that they will not have to work as hard as he had. The well-to-do desire education for culture and social distinction. Others see the vocational side only. Too often the teacher's idea is to cram the students' memories with facts from books. Without further discussion we might define education as preparation for life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Grade and Teach a Country School The question, "What can be done to improve the condition of the country school, has been ably discussed from the platform of our educational gatherings for many years; school journals have devoted pages to this important question, teachers have labored from the first to improve the system of instruction as found in these schools of the people; legislation has been invoked in innumerable instances to satisfy the demands of a practical constituency; superintendents, of both county and state, have recommended plans for the solution of the problem; and National Bureaus of Education have issued circulars attempting to solve it. For a time these discussions and suggestions recommended special helps and aids; they were all good so far as they proposed to improve the rural schools, and aided very materially in giving teachers better methods of classification, and instruction; thus was the question answered in part; many of the country schools were improved by these discussions, but not all of them. Book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint written by Julius Bernhard Arp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School Much has been written of late concerning the Rural School Problem. All students of country life seem to agree that a radical readjustment of the entire rural educational and social system, to fit modern conditions, is imperative; but while a few of the leaders have hewn close to the vital spot, none so far have gone straight to the heart of the subject. The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet - they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. The one-room school must go. It cannot provide the education to which country boys and girls are entitled and which the welfare of the country demands.
