Book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-Growing Seventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty - two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, logan'berry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are con temporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit the vineyard should be seen through many eyes. Other types of grapes - Vinifera (european or Old World grapes) and Muscadine - are more adapted to particular regions. Bunch grapes are an important commercial fruit and also one of the most popular and extensively grown fruits in home plantings. They are easy to grow, bear early and regularly, and are small but long-lived plants. Insects and dis eases are usually easily controlled. The grapes are grown for fresh fruit and for processing (wine, juice, jams, jellies, and frozen products). Book Our Hardy Grapes What to Plant

Download or read book Our Hardy Grapes What to Plant written by J. M. Knowlton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Hardy Grapes, What to Plant: How to Plant, Train, and Manage Them We do not, however, think that it has much to rocem mend it, except its earliness and hardiness: and even in these it is so little superior to other varieties which have other excellencies, that it is scarcely to be cultivated, except for the sake of variety. The Concord is a grape ripening almost as early as the pre ceding. It is a strong, vigorous grower, throwing out thick canes which extend a great distance, producing its fruit fully and plentifully, requiring but little care, yet amply repaying any extra care bestowed upon it. The berries and bunches are both very large, almost black, covered with a beautiful bloom. The flavor is much like the Isabella, a little more musky perhaps; but this muskiness constantly decreasing with age and culture. The vine is healthy, not subject to mildew or rot, and one of the most certain to produce good results of any variety that we have. It is said to make good wine, but we scarcely think that possible in the neighbor hood of New York, without the addition of sugar; and in our estimation a mixture of fruit juices and cane sugar is not wine. We have tasted wine made from the Concord without the addition of sugar; but it was thin, without body, and probably would not keep. Yet the Concord as a market grape, is probably among the best and most profitable that can be cultivated. It has been extensively disseminated, and will in all probability be planted more extensively than any other variety except the Delaware, for many years to come. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of the Native Grape, and Manufacture of American Wines It is with a great deal of hesitation I undertake to write a book about Grapes, a subject which has been, and still is, elucidated every day; and about which we have already several works, which no doubt are more learned, more elaborate, than anything I may produce. But the subject is of such vast importance, and the area suitable for grape culture so large, the diversity of soil and climate so great, that I may be pardoned if I still think that I could be of some use to the beginner; it is for them, and not for my brethren of the craft more learned than I am, that I write. If they can learn any thing from the plain talk of a practical worker, to help them along in the good work, I am well repaid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Growing in California American grapes - Concord and others - withstand humid summers and cold winters better than pure vinifera varieties. They do better in regions of moderate summer humidity than in the very dry, semiarid climate of the interior valleys of California. Rare, indeed, are the grapes that will endure high humidity coupled With high temperatures, a con dition common in the tropics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grapes: Test of Varieties The results now obtained cannot be relied on wit/z certainty even for the vineyard in which the varieties have been grown, and must be less trustworthy for other places. As an illustration of what is meant, the behavior of some of the varieties of which several vines were planted may be noted. Until. The present season, all of the Concords have seemed in as good health as is usual with that variety. This season the leaves on one of the vines began to die about the latter part of July, and by the time the fruit should have been ripe nearly all the leaves were more or less affected, and at least one-third of them had fallen off. As a result of the diseased condition of the leaves, the fruit was very much later in ripening (at least a week or ten days), and it never attained either the size or richness in quality of the fruit on vines in perfect health. The vines also, necessarily, made less growth and ripened their wood less perfectly than those that had healthy foliage. The only difference between the treatment of the vine that was diseased and of those that remained healthy was in the method of training, and this was so slight, that it probably had no effect. Soil and culture were exactly the same, so far as one could judge by observation. There are eight vines of Delaware growing in the same vineyard. In the season of 1892 one of them shed its leaves early from disease, and the fruit, as a consequence, failed to ripen. Although it was left until the fruit was all gone from the healthy vines, the fruit on this one was still green and sour. This year (1893) the Vine that was diseased last year seemed to be in good health, While another one a short distance away shed its leaves prematurely and so failed to ripen its fruit properly. The method of training the two Delaware vines is somewhat different, though both are on a trellis. The behavior of Moore's early has not been the same for all the plants. Some of them shed their leaves so badly as to fail entirely to ripen the fruit while on others that held their foliage as they should the fruit ripened well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grape Culturist: A Treatise on the Cultivation of the Native Grape Every one who has read ancient history, or studied any of the numerous works on vine culture, is aware that the grape has been cultivated and esteemed as one of the choicest fruits ever since the earliest period. Vine culture has been a constant attendant upon civilization, following it from country to country, and progressing with it; yet the same species of vine that thrives so well over a great portion of the Eastern Hemisphere has, except in a few isolated locations, entirely failed in this our favored land. Although we may regret that the European grape is nu suited to our climate, yet we may congratulate ourselves that we have indigenous species from which new varieties have been produced which rival, in point of flavor at least, any of the foreign ones; and we are encouraged to hope for a native grape which shall equal the European in every good quality. Book Grape Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grape Culture Classic Reprint written by George C. Butz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture The grape is one of the most satisfactory fruits to be grown upon the home plot of uhatever dimensions, and the fruit grower in Penn sylvania will find a vineyard an excellent producer of income. A single vine near a house is a horticultural ornament and a source of much pleasure when the fruit is ripe. A grape arbor multiplies the advantages, and will yield fruit for jellies. Jams and the table for a family. More to be desired is the small vineyard of 50 to 100 vines with varieties that ripen early and late, furnishing ripe, fruit from the first of August to the first of December, of the several colors and flavors of our modern varieties. The grape thrives in a variety of soils, so that no farm home and few others need to be deprived of this wholesome fruit. The notion that onlv experts can grow grapes is erroneous. Most of the grape growers began without experience or knowledge of grape culture and have found the work easy and the returns encouraging. This bulletin is prepared with a view to the needs and instruction of the beginner and amateur in grape culture as well as for the guidance of the commercial grower, who mav find here some suggestions that will be helpful in the midst of the grape troubles that arise. The expert needs no assistance and the writer will be pleased to have his criticism of this publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
