Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better English, Vol. 2 of 3: For Speaking and Writing Throughout the series, much attention is given to voice training, in order to meet a growing demand for the improvement of American speech among both the native-b orn and the' foreign elements. This training begins with a few very simple exercises in the third grade, and develops into a definitely organized treat ment in the later grades. The objective of these lessons is to make the child feel from the outset that what he says to his friends will fail of its purpose, no matter how well expressed his thought may be, unless his voice is adequate, his enunciation clear, and his pronunciation correct. The emphasis in the voice work is placed on correct breathing, clear enunciation of the principal consonants and vowel sounds, and on distinct pronunciation of certain commonly neglected word endings. The exercises in voice training, and in language, both oral and written, have been successfully developed by actual experience in the classroom. In the dictionary, word-study, and vocabulary lessons included in Books II and III of the series, it is suggested that the Winston Simplified Dictionary, because of the simplicity of its definitions and its general adaptation to the needs of the youthful student, will be found especially helpful. Book National Manhood and the Creation of Modern Quebec

Download or read book National Manhood and the Creation of Modern Quebec written by Jeffery Vacante and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intellectual history explores how the idea of manhood shaped French Canadian culture and Quebec’s nationalist movement. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, Quebec was an agrarian society, and masculinity was rooted in the land and the family and informed by Catholic principles of piety and self-restraint. As the industrial era took hold, a new model was forged, built on the values of secularism and individualism. Jeffery Vacante’s perceptive analysis reveals how French Canadian intellectuals defined masculinity in response to imperialist English Canadian ideals. This “national manhood” would be disentangled from the workplace, the family, and the land and tied instead to one’s cultural identity. The new formulation was crucial in the larger struggle to modernize Quebec’s institutions while preserving French Canadian community, faith, and culture. It offered French Canadian men a way to remodel themselves, participate in industrial modernity, and still assert cultural authority.

Book Wordsworth and the Writing of the Nation

Download or read book Wordsworth and the Writing of the Nation written by Professor James M Garrett and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shedding fresh light on Wordsworth's contested relationship with an England that changed dramatically over the course of his career, James Garrett places the poet's lifelong attempt to control his literary representation within the context of national ideas of self-determination represented by the national census, national survey, and national museum. Garrett provides historical background on the origins of these three institutions, which were initiated in Britain near the turn of the nineteenth century, and shows how their development converged with Wordsworth's own as a writer. The result is a new narrative for Wordsworth studies that re-integrates the early, middle, and late periods of the poet's career. Detailed critical discussions of Wordsworth's poetry, including works that are not typically accorded significant attention, force us to reconsider the usual view of Wordsworth as a fading middle-aged poet withdrawing into the hills. Rather, Wordsworth's ceaseless reworking of earlier poems and the flurry of new publications between 1814 and 1820 reveal Wordsworth as an engaged public figure attempting to 'write the nation' and position himself as the nation's poet.
