Book Better Days Will Come Again

Download or read book Better Days Will Come Again written by Travis Atria and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Briggs's life was Homeric in scope. Born on the tiny island of Grenada, he set sail for Harlem during the Renaissance, then to Europe in the aftermath of World War I, where he was among the first pioneers to introduce jazz music to the world. During the legendary Jazz Age in Paris, Briggs's trumpet provided the soundtrack while Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the rest of the Lost Generation got drunk. By the 1930s, Briggs was considered "the Louis Armstrong of Paris," and was the peer of the greatest names of his time, from Josephine Baker to Django Reinhardt. Even during the Great Depression, he was secure as "the greatest trumpeter in Europe." He did not, however, heed warnings to leave Paris before it fell to the Nazis, and in 1940, he was arrested and sent to the prison camp at Saint Denis. What happened at that camp, and the role Briggs played in it, is truly unforgettable. Better Days Will Come Again, based on groundbreaking research and including unprecedented access to Briggs's oral memoir, is a crucial document of jazz history, a fast-paced epic, and an entirely original tale of survival.

Book Letters and Papers from Prison

Download or read book Letters and Papers from Prison written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great classics of prison literature, Letters and Papers from Prison effectively serves as the last will and testament of the Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a young German pastor who was executed by the Nazis in 1945 for his part in the “officers’ plot” to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This expanded version of Letters and Papers from Prison shifts the emphasis of earlier editions of Bonhoeffer’s theological reflections to the private sphere of his life. His letters appear in greater detail and show his daily concerns. Letters from Bonhoeffer’s parents, siblings, and other relatives have also been added, in addition to previously inaccessible letters and legal papers referring to his trial. Acute and subtle, warm and perceptive, yet also profoundly moving, the documents collectively tell a very human story of loss, of courage, and of hope. Bonhoeffer’s story seems as vitally relevant, as politically prophetic, and as theologically significant today, as it did yesterday.

Book Speaking Bipolar s 30 Days of Positivity

Download or read book Speaking Bipolar s 30 Days of Positivity written by Scott Ninneman and published by Speaking Bipolar. This book was released on 2024-08-03 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you ready to have a positive mindset? It's hard to stay upbeat in today's world, especially if you have a mental illness like bipolar disorder. Difficult, but not impossible. Speaking Bipolar's 30 Days of Positivity was first created as an email course to help readers get through the emotional chaos of the last months of the year. Through motivating stories, Scott Ninneman (creator of Speaking Bipolar and living with bipolar 1 disorder) gave the participants a positive theme to focus on each day and how to live successfully with bipolar. After the first readers completed the course, they all said the same thing: "This needs to be a book!" So here it is, the original course, newly edited and formatted, and including all the additional reading content. Each day has an uplifting message and a journal prompt to think deeper about the day's topic. The end of every lesson also includes a creative writing prompt, which you can use as a second journal prompt. The chapter after each lesson is additional reading material linked to in the original course. People who took the 30 Day's course all rated it a 9-10. They said: - "This course is a real blessing in my life!" - "Very helpful and heart warming course." - "It made me feel not so alone." - "I looked forward to it every morning." Author Steve Kralick, whose background is salt laden from years upon the Caribbean, has breathed life into Jose Caserias, an aging Spanish fisherman in this captivating novella created for all people of all ages. Jose, whom Kralick admittedly befriended "in another life," struggles against the sea as well as the trials of life. His is an existence of treasured memories, and a monumental question about an unsure future formulated by the author in the most simplistic, yet powerfully symbolic vocabulary through a series of flashbacks in Jose's life. Confront the turbulent oceans of our existence while seeking the satisfaction and understanding of life as she deals her cards to us in a story where reading between the lines is every bit as important as reading the words themselves.

Book Beyond This Vale of Tears

Download or read book Beyond This Vale of Tears written by Maximo Gomez y Espinoza and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades after his migration from Cuba in October of 1962 had helped to block out the horrific realities of the revolution, but not the sadness and unrest he still experienced. From childhood and through his adult life, Maximo Gomez questioned what his life was meant for, and not receiving an answer, he found peace only in retreat and solitude. In September of 1997, as he grieved his father's death, he received an otherworldly commission from his ancestors to pen down his family's history. A story that would span almost one hundred years, forcing him to relive the anguish and despair of every generation he uncovered. During his quest, Maximo Gomez returned to Cuba, wrote letters to the Vatican and genealogical societies in Spain. Curiously, and yet cautiously, the author moved through a maze of politics, affluence, betrayal, death and privation that he later came to recognize as a journey of rediscovery. In this dramatized, often funny historical fiction, Max Gomez puts his phantoms to rest, finding the door of reconciliation between his future and his past.
