Farrington of the department of dairy husbandry at the University of Wisconsin asks his class of farm boys at the end of each term this question, "What languages do you speak besides English?" One boy answered, "I can speak a little Norwegian and a little German, and I understand horses and cows." That is the very object in writing this book. We want to make the language of cows a little better understood by the dairymen of this country. To know about cows, the farms and the best farm practices in different parts of our great country will make a man a better farmer on his own farm. With the reading of this book we hope that farmers may have their vision broadened and perhaps a suggestion will be found that will change a practice so that a little more money may be made and saved. At the time of writing this preface farming is said to be in a bad way. The lawmakers and the others are all busy trying to help the farmer. Some good will come of their efforts. We think, however, that the most good will come through the efforts of the farmer himself. He will build for himself on his own farm and will build for himself and for his neighbors when he joins with them in the community and state enterprises which he will help to build, at the foundation first, in his own community. Co-operative effort will make for "better farming, better business and better living." The dairy farmer is the best off of all. Conditions in Wisconsin and New York and the other dairy states show that. This is no time for anything but optimism because the demand for milk and dairy products is growing and the market for these is the foundation of the business. With the market for milk and dairy products becoming increasingly good the market for surplus dairy cattle will become better. The object in writing this book is to help some with all this. Consequently, Asian countries are seeking to improve their self-sufficiency in dairy produce by developing their local milk industries. Asian livestock importers are looking for increasing numbers of high grade dairy stock from established dairy industries in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, a major problem encountered throughout Asia has been the poor performance of these exotic high grade dairy heifers when exported from their country of origin to a new, more stressful environment. This has been due to a failure to prepare for their introduction. Exotic dairy cows, particularly those from farms with high levels of herd performance, have high management requirements. If subjected to local and traditional small holder dairy farm practices, they are unlikely to produce acceptable yields of milk or may not even get back into calf. Poor management practices can lead to low growth rates, delayed breeding, stock diseases and even deaths among imported stock both before and after first calving. Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics addresses the entire range of management practices found on tropical small holder dairy farms, highlighting those which are likely to adversely impact on heifer and cow performance, hence farm profitability. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.
