Eine entscheidende Erkenntnis der letzten Jahrzehnte der Medizin und Gesundheitsforschung liegt darin, dass Gesundheit und Gesundheitsverhalten maßgeblich in der Interaktion mit den jeweiligen Lebenswelten geprägt werden. Ein zentraler Bereich dieser Lebenswelten ist die Erwerbsarbeit. Arbeit und Gesundheit sind im Leben eines jeden Menschen nahezu untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Sie stehen in einem ambivalenten Verhältnis zueinander. Dies zeigt sich dadurch, dass sich Arbeit auf die Gesundheit und somit auch auf die Leistungsfähigkeit und auf die gesamten Persönlichkeitseigenschaften sowohl positiv als auch negativ auswirken kann. Arbeit kann dementsprechend sowohl potentiell gesundheitsfördernd als auch gesundheitsgefährdend sein. Durch die globalen Bedingungen des wirtschaftlichen Wettbewerbs haben sich zudem umfassende Veränderungen für die Unternehmen ergeben. Rasant halten unterschiedliche neue Technologien, Arbeits- und Organisationsformen Einzug. Geschäftsabläufe werden laufend beschleunigt. Hoher Konkurrenzdruck, beschleunigte Reorganisationen und Anpassung an die wirtschaftliche Situation sind nur einige Schlagworte. Doch es sind nicht nur die Unternehmen selbst, die von diesen Entwicklungen betroffen sind. Diese Gegebenheiten haben enorme Konsequenzen für die Mitarbeiter und deren Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen. Neue Arbeitsformen und Beschäftigungsverhältnisse entstehen, der Leistungsdruck auf den einzelnen Mitarbeiter steigt, während dieser mit Kürzungen sozialer Leistungen und der Sorge um den Erhalt des Arbeitsplatzes konfrontiert wird. Flexibilität und hohe Anpassungsfähigkeit im Berufsleben werden heutzutage ebenso vorausgesetzt wie die ständige Bereitschaft sich weiterzubilden. Die steigenden Erwartungen und Anforderungen der Betriebe hinterlassen ihre Spuren und es kommt bei Erwerbstätigen zu erhöhten motorischen, psychischen und sozialen Belastungen. Krankheitsbedingter Arbeitsausfall, eingeschränkte Leistungsfähigkeit, Motivationsdefizite sind mögliche negative Folgen.

Taking account of the growing evidence that international diversity persists despite 'globalization', it sets out from the theory of the firm first developed by Coase and Simon, and explains why firms and workers should use the employment relationship as the basis for their economic cooperation. The originality of the employment relationship lies in its flexibility. It gives managers the authority to organize work, but it also establishes limits on employees' obligations. The nature of these limits is fundamental to our understanding of the employment relationship and its international diversity. The author argues that they are provided by four basic types of employment rule. Which one predominates in a given environment is the source of international diversity in employment relations. Drawing upon evidence from the US, Japan, France, Germany, and Britain, the theory is developed to show why such diversity extends deep into key areas of human resource management, such as performance management, incentive pay, and skill development. It also explains why the open-ended employment relationship continues to dominate work despite the growth of market-mediated work relations.
