Book Bethlehem and Its Surroundings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bethlehem and Its Surroundings Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth K. Churchill and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethlehem and Its Surroundings Within the last quarter of a century a great change has taken place in the traveling habits of Americans. The increased pressure of business and social life has made summer rest and recreation necessary for multitudes who once jogged contentedly along their narrow paths year after year, without feeling over-weighted by work and worry, or knowing the pressure of new wants springing from the more aesthetic culture which is in some form or other thrust to-day upon every household.- Forty years ago, few of our country-people traveled except upon errands of business or friendship. A journey to, Europe gave one local distinction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Jerusalem Bethany and Bethlehem Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jerusalem Bethany and Bethlehem Classic Reprint written by J. L. Porter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem, Bethany and Bethlehem The descriptions of Jerusalem, Bethany, and Bethlehem given in the following pages are not the results of a single visit to the Holy City. I resided in Palestine for a number of years; and while preparing "Murray's Hand-Book," and revising its several editions, I had occasion repeatedly to examine, with no little minuteness, all places of sacred and historic interest in Palestine, Jerusalem being the chief. But in addition to my own careful observations on the spot, I have uniformly consulted all available authorities, and I would specially mention one - "The Land and the Book." I look upon it as a storehouse of nearly everything that illustrates the topography of Palestine, and the manners and customs of the people. It is considerably more than a quarter of a century since I first met my esteemed friend, Dr. Thomson, on the side of Lebanon. Even then he was considered one of the highest authorities on the subjects he has since treated of. The illustrated edition of his book is a splendid work, reflecting the highest credit on the venerable author. It is a book that should be in the hands of all students of the Bible. A few of the engravings in this volume are taken from it, but except these the views here given are entirely new in this country. They are chiefly from photographs taken under the superintendence of M. Le Dr. Lortet in a journey to the East. Book Bethlehem Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bethlehem Classic Reprint written by Frederick William Faber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethlehem For this Book not only represents a past in which you are as much mixed up as with that other past six years ago, but, by God's appointment, it calls up associations, which, if they are less joyous, are on that very account more tender. That Will of God, which has laid you aside and given you, apparently for life, only pain and endurance for your portion in the work of His vineyard, has disappointed many hopes and frustrated many schemes, which were more dear to us than strangers can ever understand. Yet I trust that neither of us have, even so much as in thought, rebelled against it. Your pilgrimage to the East did not - so God willed it -restore the health which you had lost in His service, and which, I have a right to say, was of even more value to me than to yourself. Neither has it pleased Him to give you the strength necessary to turn your journey to account in a literary way, for the good of His Church or the illustration of His Word. But much of this Book is yours. To you is owing all that is correct and accurate and pictorial about the scenes which it describes. It gives the Book a sort of sad value to me, to think that it is, with all its incompleteness, the only record of your painstaking visit to the Holy Places. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How They Came to Bethlehem One of the Wise Men drew near as she rose and lifted the jar to her shoulder. "Peace to thee, my daughter!" "And to thee, my father," she replied; but her voice was dull as lead, and her eyes as she looked at him were clouded as if they saw not, and red as if they were ever weeping. "Is thy heart heavy?" "My heart is very heavy, O Wise Man; and the light of mine eyes is gone out. My husband hath died, and my little one hath died, and the home is empty, and there is no joy in life." Then spoke the Wise Man cheerily: "We go to find the King who giveth joy, my daughter. We have seen his star at its rising. He shall lighten all hearts. Come thou with us and find him." A spark of hope gleamed for a moment in the woman's eyes. "Can he give me back mine own?" she asked with hungry voice; and the Wise Man said, "It may well be. Thine own are in his hand. Come thou and discover." And the lonely woman laid her water-jar down at the root of a tree and said, "I will go." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethlehem to Olivet: The Life of Jesus Christ Yet in no portion of the life of Jesus Christ is there really greater glory than in His birth. Nothing showed more love for the world than His condescending to be born. We should say that the heart of the gospel was the cross, but the first act of redemption was the Incarnation, when the Son of God emptied Himself of His divine attributes and entered human life in all the feebleness and helplessness of infancy. In its reveal ing of love and grace, the cradle of Jesus is as marvellous as His cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Night in Bethlehem: A Christmas Story Laric sat upon a gray rock at the roadside, gazing vacantly upon the golden splendour of Jerusalem, and meditated on his melancholy lot, and its growing hopelessness. The last rays of the setting sun made the Temple walls a hill of flame, and a biting wind had begun to blow. It would be a hard night for poor travellers like himself, and he was very weary. His feet were bound in rags, his cloak was thin, and the wind set his old wounds aching. Throngs of people passed him, eyeing him askance, as they well might, for he looked like a robber. He received their glances of fear and contempt with equal unconcern, for he had long ago ceased to expect from the world anything but hardness. At that moment his whole mind was concerned with the important question whether or not he should enter the great city. His hand, fumbling secretly in his rags, counted the few copper coins which were all his wealth, and he reluctantly admitted that the city was not for him. This admission set him thinking of the past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shrill and clear the cock's clarion Breaks the dread stillness, and anon Winds among Ramah's wooded dells. As the bugle at reveille tells Bivouacking men a new day's born, And calls them to greet its glad morn, So toiling men, and beasts who were In village close, or pastures sere, Now 'gan to stir - at first drowsily, slow - But later more lively seemed to grow. Dawn A few faint dawn tints flush the East And ruddy fingers touch the peaks In far off regions Idumean. Then as one scans the shifting scene, The more sublime of Ariel's mounts Seem to thrust up their tops, as founts, To catch the first bright glints of day. Book From the Throne of Saul to Bethlehem Classic Reprint

Download or read book From the Throne of Saul to Bethlehem Classic Reprint written by Chas Sanderson Medbury and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Throne of Saul to Bethlehem Two little volumes - "From Eden to the Jordan" and "From the Jordan to the Throne of Saul" - have preceded the studies here presented. Just what work these volumes have done, no one can tell. If they have made the Way clearer or more beautiful, the heart that shaped their pages is glad. It will be borne in mind that in all this work little more than a simple introductory survey is possible. We are merely listening while the Book speaks - reverently opening life to the message of our God just as it is given On the pages of his word. Interpretations are for others. However legitimate their place in other works, they do not belong in this. And yet, at the last, he is best fitted to interpret and to pass judgment upon "problems" who knows best the very letter of revelation and has partaken most of its spirit. Hence the real value of outline work that keeps close to the text and close to Him who gaw it. With fervent prayer that those who keep company together in the pathways here sketched may find new joys in Him whom Bethlehem reveals, the work is committed to the favor of our God.
