Book Routes to the World a New History of Eighteenth Century Science

Download or read book Routes to the World a New History of Eighteenth Century Science written by Jordan Goodman and published by . This book was released on 2019-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A global history of botany and plant collecting in 18th century based on original research in many languages. Joseph Banks, botanist for Cook's great voyage to the South Pacific on The Endeavour, was a child of the Enlightenment. He believed that reason, in the shape of scientific knowledge, was the key to political and economic progress. He was also what Malcolm Gladwell terms 'a connector'. In the second half of the 18th century, people who wanted something done in science and exploration went to Banks. And what Banks cared most about was botany. Botany was the darling of European science in this period. A bounty of new plants was found wherever European ships ventured, in the Atlantic, the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. Exotic plants entered and changed Europe in many different ways: as ornamental varieties that began to adorn private gardens; or medicinal agents applied to cure what had been considered incurable conditions; or industrial raw materials; or as new and brilliant dyes. This was a time when travelling physically also meant travelling intellectually. Banks and his fellow pioneers were expanding the horizons of knowledge itself. Jordan Goodman's brilliant, epic history tells how science changed the balance of powers in the world. Each of its thirteen chapters follows a different expedition or mission set in motion by Banks - Masson's voyage to Cape Colony, Staunton's plant hunting in China, James Bowie in Australia, Bligh in Tahiti and Jamaica, Roxburgh and the founding of the Calcutta Botanical Gardens, to name just a few. It is a vast story, spanning every continent - a huge jigsaw, told through meticulous use of Banks's 20,000 extant letters, scattered across the globe from San Francisco to Australia. This is a book that tells great stories, on every continent of the planet.

Book William Roxburgh

Download or read book William Roxburgh written by Tim Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in the mid 18th century, William Roxburgh was brought up in the centre of the Edinburgh Enlightenment, with all the patronage an intellectual curiosity that this entailed. After joining the East India Company as an Assistant Surgeon on one of their ships, he joined the staff of the General hospital at Madras. Soon he was Company Naturalist, describing many species for the first time which inspired some beautiful watercolour drawings by Indian artists, copies of which were sent to Sir Joseph Banks at Kew. Arising from his scientific work, he was appointed the first paid Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Garden in 1793, where he continued his previous experimental work as well as looking into the introduction of a wide range of crops. Always looking for ways to improve the lot of native workers, to reduce the impact of frequent famines, he suggested labour-intensive methods by developing local skills and introducing suitable plants could be used for food. With important work also on the botany of the Cape of Good House as well as St Helena, and significant contributions to the fields of meteorology, zoology and geology, Roxburgh's obituaries referred to him as the 'greatest botanist since Linnaeus.' This is the first full biography of 'The Founding Father of Indian Botany.' Beautifully illustrated throughout with archival material, botanical drawings and photographs, some published here for the first time, this joint publication with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a must for historians, botanist and general readers alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Botanist: Being the Botanical Part of a Course of Lectures on Natural History, Delivered in the University at Cambridge; Together With a Discourse on the Principle of Vitality There are few people of education who have not a pretty accurate idea of what is meant by the terms Astronomy, or Chemistry but there are not many among us, who have a satisfactory idea of the term natural history. If when puzzled they recur to the meaning of words, they learn, that Natural History is a treasure of the mind kept by memory; whereas most people conceive it to be merely a knowledge of those criteria by which we are enabled to distinguish, at first sight, one nat ural body from another and therefore instead of an history, is frequently a mere description of'a fix ed and permanent substance and if they consult those splendid and costly books, in which the gra phic art almost equals nature, they still wonder why those pictures are called histories, since they do not express those alterations and successive.
