Instead of providing meaningful jobs, access to quality health care and education, and fair and equitable housing, veterans learn that when their military service is done, they are now fighting a new battle – a failed bureaucracy which has let them and other veterans down for the past 100 years. It’s not as if we as a nation haven’t tried. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has seen the largest increase in funding in its history and has been given several free passes when the budget axe arrives. Federal funding and grants for education have also enjoyed similar financial favor; and housing opportunities have been increased. Yet on a rudimentary level, we as a nation cannot stop believing that GI Joe and Jane can’t wait to come back home and pick up right where they left off before their military service began. The truth is, that person is gone and is not coming back. After months or years in a highly structured organizational environment, often times with deployments and horrific battlefield experiences, the military veteran has undergone a paradigm shift in their thinking, their character, and in the way they view themselves and others. Advances in medical triage and transport have saved thousands of men and women who in previous wars who would have died on the battlefield; and new prosthetics and treatment strategies for those with “invisible wounds” have helped many. But an overburdened VHA isn’t prepared to provide for the sheer volumes of veterans that return home. And with veteran unemployment rates traditionally running percentage points higher than their civilian counterparts, America still wonders why. Many veterans, particularly those with PTSD are lost when returning home. Moving Past PTSD: Consciousness, Understanding, and Appreciation for Military Veterans and Their Families hopes to break this cycle. In their own words, veterans, caregivers, and the family members that love them are given the opportunity to tell us what is truly broken in the military to civilian transition. Set against a background of increasing 'honour'-based violence within the country's South Asian and Muslim Diasporas, the book traces the development of the 'honour' question over the past two decades. It accordingly witnesses unprecedented changes in public awareness and government policy including ground-breaking 'honour'-specific legislation and the criminalisation of forced marriage. All of which makes Britain an important context for the study of this now indigenous and self-perpetuating social problem. In considering the scale of the challenge and its underlying causes, attention is paid to the intersections of gendered power structures that disadvantage female members of 'honour' cultures as well as feminist theories that seek to explain them. The book features five key case-studies of 'honour' killings and draws from a wide range of narratives including those of 'honour' violence survivors, grassroots service providers and legislators. Such myriad of perspectives reveals the complexity of the 'honour' issue and the deep ideological divisions that characterise it. They are about the 'limiting function' of administrative law: its function to protect individuals from arbitrary power, to legitimize administrative action, and to combat corruption. This book analyses the sources and functions of the pan-European general principles of good administration and seeks to uncover how deeply they are rooted in the domestic legal systems of the CoE Member States. It comprises 28 country reports dedicated to an in-depth exploration of the impact of these standards on the national legal systems of the Member States written by respective experts on these systems. It argues that the pan-European general principles of good administration lead to a certain harmonization of the legal orders of the Member States with regard to the limiting function of administrative law despite the many fundamental differences between their administrative and legal systems. It comes to the further conclusion that the pan-European general principles of good administration can be considered as a concretization of the founding values of the CoE and describes the 'administrative law obligations' a Member State entered into when joining the CoE.

It is a controversial issue in the UK, Australia and the US where there is a clash of values between neoliberal governments and diverse groups either strongly opposing or supporting marriage. In the meantime, fewer couples are marrying, while other family forms are more widely accepted. This book explores this disconnect by examining policy issues such as class divides, ethnicity, religion, same-sex marriage, gender relations and romantic expectations. A top down approach explores different government policy responses to marriage. In all three countries, there are differences and similarities in how governments react to the changes in family formations, but values or ‘conceptions of the desirable’ play a significant role. Enhancing stability and commitment as well as personal responsibility are important for policymakers who aim to keep ‘the family’ intact and thereby lower the burden on the public purse. It is difficult for political actors to respond to conflicting and changing values surrounding the diversity in relationships or to translate them into policies. There is a strong case to be made for increased policy attention to adult relationships - and a much weaker case for marriage. Rich evidence is drawn from interviews with key stakeholders as well as politicians’ speeches, government departmental reports, stakeholders’ documents and responses to government policies, and media articles.

Yet even with growing support from the laity, and an increasing number of vocal priests and nuns, same-sex couples are still denied the opportunity to experience the sacrament of marriage. Drawing on testimony from same-sex married couples who have “a meaningful connection to the Catholic tradition,” this book makes a case for considering same-sex marriage as sacramental from a Catholic perspective. Further, it argues that Catholic families, church communities, and institutions would benefit from wider and deeper practices of gospel-inspired hospitality and sanctuary as it relates to queer persons and couples. At the book’s heart are stories from twenty-two couples, gathered from in-person interviews in Wisconsin, Chicagoland, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay area. The research builds on a previous project on Catholic marriage, conducted with a colleague, Julie Donovan Massey, which resulted in Project Holiness: Marriage as a Workshop for Everyday Saints (Liturgical Press, 2015; winner of a 2016 Catholic Press Association Award). While that project was limited to heterosexual couples, expanding the research to include same-sex couples was both timely and necessary. Currently, the Catholic magisterium asserts: “There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family” (Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, Considerations Regarding Proposals To Give Legal Recognition To Unions Between Homosexual Persons (No. 4). Reasserted in the 2015 Synod document (No. 76). and quoted by Pope Francis in Amoris Laetitia (No. 251). On the other hand, same sex marriage has been legalized in our country; same sex couples—including Catholic ones—are de facto marrying and parenting; a significant number of mainline Protestant churches support same-sex marriage; and some revisionist Catholic sexual ethicists support same-sex relationships. Clearly, at this moment in time, continued theological analysis of same-sex marriage is crucial. The voices and experiences of same-sex couples must inform that analysis. Gathered are stories that highlight how couples are sacraments to one another as well as to their families and communities, as their love overflows in lifegiving ways. Also included are powerful stories of rejection, inclusion, and belonging in families, church communities, and Catholic institutions, pointing to the power and necessity of gospel-inspired, radical hospitality and sanctuary. This book is an invitation to practice what Pope Francis calls “the art of listening,” necessary for genuine encounter and solidarity in a diverse body of Christ (The Joy of the Gospel No. 171).
