Download or read book The 100 Greatest Bands of All Time 2 volumes written by David V. Moskowitz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind reference investigates the music and the musicians that set the popular trends of the last half century in America. Many rock fans have, at one time or another, ranked their favorite artists in order of talent, charisma, and musical influence on the world as they see it. In this same spirit, author and music historian David V. Moskowitz expands on the concept of "top ten" lists to provide a lineup of the best 100 musical groups from the past 60 years. Since the chosen bands are based on the author's personal taste, this two-volume set provokes discussion of which performers are included and why, offering insights into the surprising influences behind them. From the Everly Brothers, to the Ramones, to Public Enemy, the work covers a wide variety of styles and genres, clearly illustrating the connections between them. Entries focus on the group's history, touring, membership, major releases, selected discography, bibliography, and influence. Contributions from leading scholars in popular music shed light on derivative artists and underscore the overall impact of the performers on the music industry.

Download or read book The Moral Economy of Cities written by Evelyn S. Ruppert and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a good city? This question has long preoccupied groups interested and involved in the making and remaking of city spaces. In The Moral Economy of Cities, Evelyn S. Ruppert contends that the vision of the 'good city' embraced by professionals in the business of city making recognizes the interests of a dominant public, namely middle class consumers, office workers, tourists, and families. This vision stigmatizes certain members of the public like street youth, panhandlers, discount- and low-income shoppers, and the language used to extol the virtues of the good city inherently moralizes social conduct in the city. Using the redevelopment of the Yonge-Dundas intersection in downtown Toronto in the mid-1990s as a case study, Ruppert examines the language of planners, urban designers, architects, and marketing analysts to reveal the extent to which moralization legitimizes these professions in the public eye and buttresses the very projects they produce. Ruppert's conclusion that economic practices are not free from moral investment encourages the considerable task of re-examining the implications of city planning and development worldwide. The Moral Economy of Cities is mandatory reading for urban studies scholars and practitioners, and their critics. Electronic Format Disclaimer: Images removed at the request of the rights holder.

Download or read book From Superwomen to Domestic Goddesses written by Natasha Campo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rise and fall of feminism in the public imagination in the last twenty years, and explains why 'feminism failed me' has become the catch-cry of a generation. Today many women turn their back on feminism because they feel betrayed by the promises of feminism. Yet during the 1980s the popular ideal of the 'Superwoman' offered a source of empowerment and pride for women and equality with men - even 'having it all' - seemed possible. Through a close reading of popular culture sources, this book shows how women's engagement with feminism has shifted over time, and considers its future as a social movement.

Download or read book Swing Sing and All That Jazz written by Henry Holloway and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from being one of just two non-Americans in history to be honoured with Americas prestigious Golden Bandstand Award, South African broadcaster, Henry Holloways remarkable impact on American light music during his 40 years on the air, internationally, is told in this book, in words and pictures. Holloways dozens of long-running radio series on American music legends are jewels, in addition to his regular series, Swing, Sing and All That Jazz, the title of which clearly depicts Henrys penchant for that genre. His relentless pursuit to perpetuate the best from the Golden Age has prompted remarkable responses from music legends like Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco, Sammy Cahn, Professor Paul Tanner, Neal Hefti, Steve Allen, Bob Crosby, Les Brown, Milt Bernhart and Ray Evans, to mention but a few of many. His Golden Bandstand Award, invitations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Society Of Singers, the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, setting world records with his 60 hours radio series on Les Brown in 2001 and his 115 programmes on Glenn Miller in 2004/06, lectures on luxury cruise liners, broadcasting on the BBC, being interviewed on television and by the press in the USA; these and many other highlights are encapsulated on a first-hand basis in this remarkable autobiography by a unique South African.
