Book excerpt: Edith Nesbit (married name Edith Bland) (1858-1924) was an English author and poet whose children's works were published under the androgynous name of E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on over 60 books of fiction for children, several of which have been adapted for film and television. She started a new genre of magical adventures arising from everyday settings and has been much imitated. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a precursor to the modern Labour Party. Nesbit's books for children are known for being entertaining without turning didactic, although some of her earlier works, notably Five Children and It (1902) and even more so The Story of the Amulet (1906), veer in that direction. Among Nesbit's best-known books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1898), The Wouldbegoods (1899) and The Railway Children (1906). Other works include The Phoenix and the Carpet (1904), The Enchanted Castle (1907) and The Magic City (1910).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Just So Stories for Little Children" are a highly fantasized origin stories, especially for differences among animals, they are among Kipling's best known works. The stories are pourquoi (French for "why") or origin stories, fantastic accounts of how various phenomena came about. In it, Mowgli hears the story of how the tiger got his stripes. The Just So Stories typically have the theme of a particular animal being modified from an original form to its current form by the acts of man, or some magical being. For example, the Whale has a tiny throat because he swallowed a mariner, who tied a raft inside to block the whale from swallowing other men. The Camel has a hump given to him by a djinn as punishment for the camel's refusing to work (the hump allows the camel to work longer between times of eating). The Leopard's spots were painted by an Ethiopian (after the Ethiopian painted himself black). The Kangaroo gets its powerful hind legs, long tail, and hopping gait after being chased all day by a dingo, sent by a minor god responding to the Kangaroo's request to be made different from all other animals. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".

He was one of that everincreasing number of Jews, who, in the lands of their dispersion, thought and worked in Hebrew. His purpose in writing was primarily to stimulate children to use Hebrew; for, to a child, the story is often the gateway of knowledge. The tales of Steinberg - some of them mere bits of fancy, some delightful satires, some pleasant allegories - possess a literary and ethical quality that make them well worth rendering in any tongue. Two of his best known works in English are In Those Days: The Story of an Old Man and The Breakfast of the Birds and Other Stories.

Book excerpt: Dorothy Canfield Fisher (1879-1958) who sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Stanley Cranshaw was an educational reformer, social activist, and best-selling American author in the early decades of the twentieth century. Dorothy Canfield brought the Montessori method of child rearing to the United States, presided over the country's first adult education program, and shaped literary tastes by serving as a member of the Book-of-the-Month Club selection committee from 1925 to 1951. Her best-known work today is probably Understood Betsy (1917), a children's book about a little orphaned girl who is sent to live with her cousins in Vermont. Though the book can be read purely for pleasure, it also describes a schoolhouse which is run much in the style of the Montessori method, for which Canfield was one of the first and most vocal advocates. In 1899 Dorothy Canfield received a B. A. from Ohio State University. Canfield went on to study Romance languages at Columbia University, and in 1904 was one of the few women of her generation to receive a doctoral degree.
