Book Developing Critical Thinking Skills in the High School English Classroom

Download or read book Developing Critical Thinking Skills in the High School English Classroom written by Genal Hove and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to think critically is an essential life skill; current literature reveals that explicit instruction in, and practice of, critical thinking strategies in the high school classroom can improve student academic performance. Adoption of critical thinking strategies can also prepare students for the rigors of college, as well as helping them develop the skills necessary to compete economically in a global environment. Research on the impact of critical thinking strategy instruction in the high school English classroom supports the findings of current literature; students who receive instruction in a critical thinking strategy were better able to demonstrate critical thinking in a post-strategy instruction assessment than those students who had received no strategy instruction.

Book Teaching Critical Thinking Skills

Download or read book Teaching Critical Thinking Skills written by Catherine Delamain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical teaching resource has been designed to give children aged 9–12 the basic tools required to challenge some of the conflicting information which they may encounter in everyday life. With increasing exposure to modern information technology and social media, amongst other things, children are increasingly exposed to misleading information that can seriously influence their worldview and self-esteem. The sooner they are helped to approach some of this material with a critical eye, the better they will be able to make independent judgements and resist undue persuasion. Key features of this book include: • Short texts designed to give opportunities for critical examination, created to be points of discussion with individuals, groups or whole classes • Topics covering seven areas of critical thought, ordered in level of difficulty, including finding contradictions, and detecting bias and fake news • Supporting teacher prompts and questions, as well as photocopiable resources without prompts The ability to question and evaluate information is an essential life skill, as well as a key skill for academic learning, yet it remains one of the most challenging aspects of comprehension to teach. This is a vital text for teachers, teaching assistants and other professionals looking to develop critical thinking skills in their students.

Book Instructional Sequence Matters Grades 3 5

Download or read book Instructional Sequence Matters Grades 3 5 written by Patrick Brown and published by Instructional Sequence Matters. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instructional Sequence Matters, Grades 3- 5 is a one-stop resource that will inspire you to reimagine how you teach science in elementary school. The book discusses two popular approaches for structuring your lessons: POE (Predict, Observe, and Explain) and 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate). It also shows how simple shifts in the way you arrange and combine activities will help young students construct firsthand knowledge, while allowing you to put the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into practice. Like its popular counterpart for grades 6- 8, the book is designed as a complete self-guided tour. It helps both novice teachers and classroom veterans to understand * Why sequence matters. A concise review of developmental psychology, neurosciences, cognitive science, and science education research explains why the order in which you structure your lessons is so critical. * What you need to do. An overview of important planning considerations covers becoming an " explore-before-explain" teacher and designing 5E and POE instructional models. * How to do it. Ready-to-teach lessons use either a POE or 5E sequence to cover heat and temperature, magnetism, electric circuits, chemical changes, ecosystems, and earth processes. Detailed examples show how specific aspects of all three dimensions of the NGSS can translate into your classroom. * What to do next. Reflection questions will spark thinking throughout the sequencing process and help you develop the knowledge to adapt these concepts to your students' needs. Instructional Sequence Matters will give you both the rationale and the real-life examples to restructure the hands-on approaches you are now using. The result will be a sequence for science instruction that promotes long-lasting understanding for your third- fourth-, or fifth-grade students.

Book Critical Thinking in English Classrooms

Download or read book Critical Thinking in English Classrooms written by Ginorah Mwamburi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical thinking is an essential life skill required by most people in today's complex world. Development of critical thinking is important in preparing students for post-secondary education and for competing economically in the global environment. A number of studies in developed countries have advanced some strategies for fostering critical thinking, however, few studies have been conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, where this study was conducted, development of critical thinking is one of the objectives of teaching English in secondary schools. The purpose of this study was to explore how teachers of English in a secondary school foster critical thinking in their classes. The findings of the study revealed that while teachers acknowledge the importance of critical thinking in learning, they do not have a clear understanding of what it is.They were also aware of the suggested pedagogical practices for fostering critical thinking but these theoretical perspectives did not reflect in their teaching, as some of the practices were not fully explored.Teachers face challenges such as superficial understanding of critical thinking, time constraints among others

Book The Knowledge Gap

  • Author : Natalie Wexler
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2020-08-04
  • ISBN : 0735213569
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book The Knowledge Gap written by Natalie Wexler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.

Book Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom

Download or read book Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom written by Erin Shadowens and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even young students can develop vital critical thinking skills when they have access to rich content, meaningful opportunities to practice, and guided instruction. Critical thinking—evaluating and analyzing data to make informed judgments—is essential in both the classroom and everyday life. Teaching critical thinking skills in the elementary grades is often an afterthought—if it's a thought at all. Veteran primary teacher and instructional leader Erin Shadowens proposes that students of all ages benefit when teachers expand the definition of what is possible by engaging young learners with real challenges and supportive, accessible learning environments. In Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom, Shadowens * Explores the concept of critical thinking, clarifies misunderstandings, and delves into relevant research. * Introduces the Critical Thinking Framework to help nurture deep thinking in the context of content-focused lessons. * Presents case studies of the framework in action. * Shows how to apply the framework at the unit and lesson levels, addressing common instructional pitfalls along the way. * Describes how a "virtuous cycle" of assessment and feedback promotes academic achievement and critical thinking. * Illustrates how to foster an intellectual community with young learners. Ultimately, this book guides elementary teachers in supporting students to think deeply about rich content, make insightful connections, and address issues in broader, more meaningful ways, both in and outside of school.
