Book Music Education on the Verge

Download or read book Music Education on the Verge written by Judy Lewis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world causing physical, emotional, economic, and social upheaval in every part of the globe. It also catalyzed a renewed interrogation, by music education faculty in higher education, of philosophies and practices that had long gone unexamined. Music Education on the Verge: Stories of Pandemic Teaching and Transformative Change is a collection of narratives by music teacher-educators describing how they responded to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic with, and for, their students. Through these stories, the authors step back and reflect on the events, challenges, triumphs, and innovations discovered as they prepared the next generation of music educators in this time of crisis. They tell stories of reexamining old frameworks, discovering new affordances of technologies, humanizing pedagogy, deepening culturally responsive and sustaining experiences, and creating space for democratic practices. Each chapter offers examples of innovative music pedagogy that can be adapted and applied by music educators and music teacher educators with their students. Collectively, they paint a picture of possibilities, challenging music teacher-educators— and educators in all fields— to seek out openings and pursue pedagogies of change as we move forward into a post-pandemic world.

Book Music Educators Experiences of Teaching Through a Pandemic

Download or read book Music Educators Experiences of Teaching Through a Pandemic written by Kelly Y. Farrell and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to understand how music educators have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study I ask the following research questions (1) Were the experiences of music educators during the pandemic unique to other teachers? (2) How have music educators' roles at school changed due to teaching during the pandemic? (3) What emotions did the COVID-19 pandemic elicit from music educators? (4) Did new teachers' experience teaching music during the pandemic differ from veteran teachers? In addressing these questions, this paper describes how individual experiences contribute to a more thorough understanding of the effects of the pandemic on music education. Current literature suggests that music educators have experienced unique challenges to their curriculum because of the pandemic and increased amounts of work-related stress. Eight music educators in Connecticut were interviewed to talk about their experience teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of their stories and insights align with current research about teacher’s pandemic experiences.

But she loves her job, her friends, her dog and her life. She loves her apartment and her commodious, quilt-lined bed. She has made a tenuous peace with her body and she even felt okay about ending her relationship with her boyfriend Bruce. But now this... 'Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world,' Bruce has written in a national woman's magazine. Book Secrets of a Mad Music Teacher

Download or read book Secrets of a Mad Music Teacher written by Bruce James and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2012-12-28 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis I sat quietly, listening as the teacher and student in the room next to mine discussed base-ball during their entire lesson. When I asked the teacher, How his lesson went, he replied “Yeah, you can kill a half hour with anything”. Children are sometimes denied a good education in our public schools, but when a parent pays $40 an hour for their child to learn guitar, their child should learn guitar. Over the years as a private music teacher, I’ve been blessed with some of the best students, those who know the meaning of hard work, and are not afraid to work hard to learn something. Unfortunately, my worst students often made it difficult to spend quality time with the ones who deserve the best. If you’re a music teacher, you know how frustrating a student that doesn’t ever practice can be. You also know how peer pressure can lead kids into a life of drugs, corruption, and even death. So many outside influences, even competitions designed to take a child’s money leaving them feeling worthless and without hope for their future. Tragically, one of my favorite students was driven to murder his own grandmother in cold blood, and then set out on a shooting spree through town. Sometimes I think I’ve seen it all, and all my stories are true. Doctors, Lawyers, business owners, and even music teachers can be so heartless, and I’m stuck in the middle teaching them all. Their names have been left out, and only they know who they are. This book wasn’t meant to cut any of my students down, it was meant to be a book about my stories as a music / guitar teacher. If it seems that I have become mad, and frustrated with my world as a private instructor, don’t worry about it. It will continue to be our secrets of a mad music teacher. Bruce James

Book The Instrumental Music Teacher

Download or read book The Instrumental Music Teacher written by Kerry Boyle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumental teaching in the UK is characterised by a lack of regulation and curriculum, whereby individuals can teach with no training or qualification. Kerry Boyle explores the way in which individuals who begin teaching can negotiate successful careers in music without formal training. Existing studies suggest that individuals in this context have complex understandings of professional identity, preferring to identify as musicians or performers rather than teachers, even when most of their income is derived from teaching. Boyle explores the complex working lives of instrumental teachers in the UK, including routes into instrumental teaching and the specific meanings associated with the role and identity of the professional musician for individuals involved in portfolio careers in music. Through an examination of the lived experience of instrumental teachers, this study highlights the need to revise existing notions of the professional musician to acknowledge contemporary careers in music. The resulting insights can be used to inform and enhance existing approaches to careers in music and contribute to career preparation in undergraduate music students.

Book excerpt: Through a collection of extensive interviews with choral conductors, educators, singers, and professional leaders, this book documents the choral music community’s journey through crisis and change during the COVID-19 pandemic and aids in its rebuilding in a new era where COVID-19 is endemic. When the pandemic emerged in early 2020, the impact on choral music was immediate and devastating, as the act of gathering and singing together became a source of contagion and potential severe illness or death. Weaving together a wide range of first-person accounts, this book addresses the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on choral music across contexts including community choruses, professional choirs, children and youth choirs, school choirs, and choral organizations. In their own words, we hear how the community responded to the challenges and banded together to innovate, use technology in new ways, and generate changes to practice. The book also explores how the pandemic caused many directors to realize that they needed to create a more inclusive place of belonging in their rehearsals, and provides reflections on the philosophy of singing and creating a choral community. Documenting both pandemic experiences and the lessons learned from surviving and thriving, this book showcases the resilience of choral music and helps point the way to new directions for the choral community in the wake of the pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this instant New York Times bestseller and “multigenerational narrative that’s nothing short of brilliant” (People), two sisters’ lives from the 1950s to the present are explored as they struggle to find their places—and be true to themselves—in a rapidly evolving world from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner. Jo and Bethie Kaufman were born into a world full of promise. Growing up in 1950s Detroit, they live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life. But the truth ends up looking different from what the girls imagined. Jo and Bethie survive traumas and tragedies. As their lives unfold against the background of free love and Vietnam, Woodstock and women’s lib, Bethie becomes an adventure-loving wild child who dives headlong into the counterculture and is up for anything (except settling down). Meanwhile, Jo becomes a proper young mother in Connecticut, a witness to the changing world instead of a participant. Neither woman inhabits the world she dreams of, nor has a life that feels authentic or brings her joy. Is it too late for the women to finally stake a claim on happily ever after? In “her most sprawling and intensely personal novel to date” (Entertainment Weekly), Jennifer Weiner tells a “simply unputdownable” (Good Housekeeping) story of two sisters who, with their different dreams and different paths, offer answers to the question: How should a woman be in the world?
