In this study I ask the following research questions (1) Were the experiences of music educators during the pandemic unique to other teachers? (2) How have music educators' roles at school changed due to teaching during the pandemic? (3) What emotions did the COVID-19 pandemic elicit from music educators? (4) Did new teachers' experience teaching music during the pandemic differ from veteran teachers? In addressing these questions, this paper describes how individual experiences contribute to a more thorough understanding of the effects of the pandemic on music education. Current literature suggests that music educators have experienced unique challenges to their curriculum because of the pandemic and increased amounts of work-related stress. Eight music educators in Connecticut were interviewed to talk about their experience teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of their stories and insights align with current research about teacher’s pandemic experiences.

Children are sometimes denied a good education in our public schools, but when a parent pays $40 an hour for their child to learn guitar, their child should learn guitar. Over the years as a private music teacher, I’ve been blessed with some of the best students, those who know the meaning of hard work, and are not afraid to work hard to learn something. Unfortunately, my worst students often made it difficult to spend quality time with the ones who deserve the best. If you’re a music teacher, you know how frustrating a student that doesn’t ever practice can be. You also know how peer pressure can lead kids into a life of drugs, corruption, and even death. So many outside influences, even competitions designed to take a child’s money leaving them feeling worthless and without hope for their future. Tragically, one of my favorite students was driven to murder his own grandmother in cold blood, and then set out on a shooting spree through town. Sometimes I think I’ve seen it all, and all my stories are true. Doctors, Lawyers, business owners, and even music teachers can be so heartless, and I’m stuck in the middle teaching them all. Their names have been left out, and only they know who they are. This book wasn’t meant to cut any of my students down, it was meant to be a book about my stories as a music / guitar teacher. Existing studies suggest that individuals in this context have complex understandings of professional identity, preferring to identify as musicians or performers rather than teachers, even when most of their income is derived from teaching. Boyle explores the complex working lives of instrumental teachers in the UK, including routes into instrumental teaching and the specific meanings associated with the role and identity of the professional musician for individuals involved in portfolio careers in music. Through an examination of the lived experience of instrumental teachers, this study highlights the need to revise existing notions of the professional musician to acknowledge contemporary careers in music. The resulting insights can be used to inform and enhance existing approaches to careers in music and contribute to career preparation in undergraduate music students.
