Book excerpt: Galaxies are vast ensembles of stars, gas and dust, embedded in dark matter halos. They are the basic building blocks of the Universe, gathered in groups, clusters and super-clusters. They exist in many forms, either as spheroids or disks. Classifications, such as the Hubble sequence (based on mass concentration and gas fraction) and the colormagnitude diagram (which separates a blue cloud from a red sequence) help to understand their formation and evolution. Galaxies spend a large part of their lives in the blue cloud, forming stars as spiral or dwarf galaxies. Then, via a mechanism that is still unclear, they stop forming stars and quietly end in the red sequence, as spheroids. This transformation may be due to galaxy interactions, or because of the feedback of active nuclei, through the energy released by their central super-massive black holes. These mechanisms could explain the history of cosmic star formation, the rate of which was far greater in the first half of the UniverseÂs life. Galaxies delves into all of these surrounding subjects in six chapters written by dedicated, specialist astronomers and researchers in the field, from their numerical simulations to their evolutions.

Book excerpt: Science fiction fans have voted for the Hugo Awards for best science fiction almost every year since 1953. Science fiction professionals have presented the Nebula Awards to their peers since 1965. In all this time, lists of winners have been widely available, but the losers have usually been ignored. In 1970 long-time fan Howard DeVore started publishing a complete listing of Hugo and Nebula awards, including the stories that were nominated but did not win. The fact that stories were nominated implied that they had considerable merit. Mr. DeVore felt that a complete listing would let fans compare them. The International Fantasy Awards may have inspired the Hugos, so he added them. DeVore brought out new editions year by year, publishing and distributing them himself with the aid of a number of devoted science fiction fans. By 1998 the task had grown to the point where Mr. DeVore happily relinquished the job to Advent. This edition includes introductory and historical essays explaining how each award got started and how nominees and winners are chosen, plus commentary in the yearly listings.

Getting himself involved in what to the casual observer would certainly be recognizable as a scam, he proceeds to lead the intrepid hustlers to Reno to raise the $25,000. On the tour bus fate strikes Sidney when he meets Lorili during her abortive attempt to hijack the bus. It is love at first smite and Sid is torn between duty and romance when Sally disarms Lorili and throws her off the bus. Broken-hearted, Sidney goes through the motions as the gambling team actually does raise the money necessary to begin production on the film now entitled, THE AMNIOCENTESIS CONCURRENCE. ZEBRA is the story of the love between two young people of totally divergent backgrounds: a young Jewish writer with great faith and a low threshold of pain, and a dynamic Latino woman who has very little trouble identifying what she wants and even less in securing it. It is the story of an old man who dreams cinemascopic dreams in Dolby sound and who wants little more than to be a part of something more creative than blackjack hustling before he dies. It is the interweaving of two inept but dedicated con artists determined to finally make that last big score that will allow them to rest for the first time in their treadmill existances. ZEBRA tells how these mismatched and unlikely characters actually bilk a casino out of the seed money necessary to start up a motion picture company, how they attempt to con each other out of the bankroll, and how they finally end up in Hollywood where it is walk the walk time.
