Book excerpt: Bertram Cope’s Year chronicles the experiences of Bertram Cope, a young literature instructor who arrives in the fictional town of Churchton to pursue his graduate studies. Set in early 20th-century America, the novel explores Cope’s interactions with the town’s residents, where his charisma and charm quickly captivate those around him. As Cope navigates social engagements and forms close relationships, particularly with his friend Arthur Lemoyne, the narrative subtly examines themes of companionship, love, and societal expectations. Fuller’s writing is distinguished by its witty dialogue and astute social commentary, offering a critique of American social norms of the period. Published in 1919, Bertram Cope’s Year is recognized for its early portrayal of same-sex relationships in literature, depicting them with nuance and sensitivity uncommon for its time. The novel invites readers to reflect on the complexities of identity and relationships in an evolving society. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Bertram Cope's Year: A Novel This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: In the social scene known as 'cap and town' in fictional Churchton, Illinois (read 'Evanston and Northwestern University') comes young instructor Bertram Cope. Blond, blue-eyed, charming and book-learned, with a patina of conversational sophistication; he is, however, not quite genuine. Impressed by wealth and well-appointed houses, Cope is too careful and self-conscious - and what he doesn't realize is that he is observed and judged as often as he observes and judges. Show Excerpt f not an acknowledged outcast from the joys of life, would soon be lagging superfluous on their rim. Randolph stood before them, looking, no doubt, a bit vacant and inexpressive. "Please go and get Amy," Mrs. Phillips said to him. "I see she's preparing to give way to some one else." Amy--who was a blonde girl of twenty or more--came back with him pleasantly and amiably enough; and her aunt--or whatever she should turn out to be-- was soon able to lay her tongue again to the syllables of the interesting name of Bertram. Cope, thus finally introduced, repeated the facial expressions which he had employed already beside the tea-table. But he added no new one; and he found fewer words than the occasion prompted, and even required. He continued talking with Mrs. Phillips, and he threw an occasional remark toward Randolph; but now that all obstacles were removed from free converse with the divinity of the samovar he had less to say to her than before. Presently the elder woman, herself no whit

Book Bertram and His Funny Animals

Download or read book Bertram and His Funny Animals written by Paul T. Gilbert and published by POMEGRANATE KIDS. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Bertram, he's always bringing home the most extraordinary pets, usually after asking his mamma for permission first, of course. But who ever heard of cutting holes in the ceiling for a giraffe? Running from a dangerously ticklish rhinoceros? Or dealing with a baboon for a babysitter? If only Bertram would bring home a dog or a cat or even a turtle instead, he might not find himself in such predicaments. And his mamma-my, is she frazzled! Author Paul T. Gilbert, who happened to have a son just like Bertram, first imagined these pet-ownership mishaps as bedtime stories, full of laughter and mayhem and wacky good fun. Bertram and His Funny Animals became a book in 1934. Now it's back in a new edition, and this time a troublesome camel joins the original's mischievous menagerie! Children will love Bertram's cackle-inducing dilemmas and the sweet drawings by Minnie Rousseff, and parents will delight in tales filled with the charming foibles of childhood. Assisting Bertram in his misadventures are his well-behaved little brother, Baby Sam, and friends Ginny Banning and George Fish. Aunt Ella and Great-Aunt Jane reliably offer their disapproval of Bertram's not-so-wild animals. Neighbor Mrs. Cree is appropriately nosy. Bertram's mamma, well, she means well. And Bertram's daddy always manages to save the day (that is, when he gets back from business in Omaha).

Book Honor and Violence in the Old South

Download or read book Honor and Violence in the Old South written by Bertram Wyatt-Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as a classic by reviewers and historians, Bertram Wyatt-Brown's Southern Honor now appears in abridged form under the title Honor and Violence in the Old South. Winner of a Phi Alpha Theta Book Award and a Jefferson Davis Memorial Book Award and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History, this is the first major reinterpretation of Southern life and custom since W.J, Cash's The Mind of the South. It explores the meaning and expression of the ancient code of honor as whites—both slaveholders and non-slaveholders—applied it to their lives. Wyatt-Brown ranges widely—covering topics such as childbearing, marital patterns, duelling, slave discipline, and lynch-law—to discover the role of honor in the psyche of white Southerners.
