Book excerpt: Military historians have often regarded the roll of the Italian military as somewhat "bi-polar." During the First World War, Italy sided with the Allies including Britain, France, Russia and the U.S. against Germany and the Central Powers. During the Second World War it signed on as a member of the Tri-Partite powers joining Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The legacy of the latter often presents a less than positive appraisal of the Italian soldier's performance... one espoused both by its enemies and allies. However a positive consensus appears when focusing on the Bersaglieri... translating as "sharp shooter"... and acting as shock troops often leading both assaults and defences. As "The Tip of the Spear" they would thus pay the price during the Italian Wars of Unification, the early colonial forays into Africa, WWI, the Ethiopian War and lastly WWII with much Bersaglieri blood soaked up by European soil as well as the burning sands of Africa and frozen in the vastness of Russia. Over 300 images including rare unpublished photographs chronicle Italy's elite "Plumed Warriors."

Book The Sardinian Expeditionary Corps

Download or read book The Sardinian Expeditionary Corps written by Chris Flaherty and published by Soldiershop Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-French-Ottoman Siege of Sevastopol, the Russian Naval Base in the Crimean, had been underway since October 1854. It had begun with the French and British landing at Eupatoria on 14 September 1854. The late joining of the Sardinian Expeditionary Corps (entering the war against Russia, on 26 January, 1855), arrived at Balaklava over May. The army of the Regno di Sardegna-Piemonte: the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont, was by the standards of the time, seen as modern, and one of the best in Europe. The Sardinian troops were relatively battle experienced, having been involved in the first wars of Italian unification in 1848. A total of 18,061 men, 3,963 horses, and mules, four fortress, and six field batteries, and war fleet came under the Sardinian command. These men showed great gallantry at the Battle of Tchernaya (16 August, 1855), and great engineering skills at the Siege of Sevastopol. Arrival of a large number of fresh experienced troops, at a time when the gruelling siege, and winter had taken a terrible cost on the Anglo-French-Ottoman Armies at Sevastopol, was likely timely. Within a month, the Russians retreated from Sevastopol bringing the siege to a conclusion, on the 9 September, 1855. Culminating with the Russian evacuation of the city, blowing up their forts and sinking their ships, on 11 September. The Sardinian Army continued to serve on the Crimean Peninsula till their embarkation in June, 1856.

Book Armies of the Crimean War 1853 1856

Download or read book Armies of the Crimean War 1853 1856 written by Gabriele Esposito and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavishly illustrated with over 100 illustrations that detail the composition, organization, uniforms, weapons and equipment of each force. The Crimean War was the first major European war since the end of the Napoleonic Wars and Britain’s only war on that continent in the century between Waterloo and WW1. When Russia invaded provinces of the Ottoman Empire, the British and French, later joined by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, intervened to limit Russian expansion towards the Black Sea. Each of the armies contained an eclectic mix of units. The regular European regiments still displayed much of the bright color and finery associated with the Napoleonic era (the British infantry in their scarlet tunics forming the famous ‘thin red line’ at Balaklava for instance), while each also contained a mix of exotic units drawn from across their respective empires. The French fielded Zouaves and Spahis from North and West Africa, not to mention the legendary Foreign Legion; the Ottomans had Tunisians and Egyptians alongside Balkan mountaineers and the infamous Bashi-bazouks; the Russians of course had their Cossacks and the British fielded little-known German, Swiss and Italian mercenaries. Gabriele Esposito details the composition, organization, uniforms and weaponry of each force and illustrates many of them with early black and white photos (this being the first major war for which photography was available), as well as numerous color artworks.

Book excerpt: The campaign in North Africa during World War Two was one of the most important of the conflict. The allies fought for control of North Africa against the German Afrika Korps led by Rommel. But the part played by Mussolini's Italian troops, and in particular the armoured divisions, in support of the Germans is not so well known. This painstakingly researched book looks in detail at the role of Mussolini's three armoured divisions - Ariete, Littorio and Centauro - and the invaluable part they played in Rommel's offensive between 1941 and 1943. Indeed, the author is able to show that on many occasions the presence and performance of the Italian armoured divisions was crucial to the success of the axis campaign.

Book The Return to Ethics

Download or read book The Return to Ethics written by Anthony Pym and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If civilizations are to cooperate as well as clash, our mediators must solve problems using serious thought about relations between Self and Other. Translation Studies has thus returned to questions of ethics. But this is no return to any prescriptive linguistics of equivalence. As the articles in this volume show, ethics is now a broadly contextual question, dependent on practice in specific cultural locations and situational determinants. It concerns people, perhaps more than texts. It involves representing dynamics, seeking specific goals, challenging established norms, and bringing theory closer to historical practice. The contributions to this volume study a wide range of translational activity, questioning global copyright regimes, denouncing exploitation within the translation profession, defending a Bible translation in terms of mutlilateral loyalty, and delving into the dynamics of popular genres, the culture bubbles of talk shows, the horrors of disaster relief in Turkey, military interpreters in the Balkans, and urgent political pleas from a Greek prison. The theoretical approaches range from empirical text analysis to applications of fuzzy logic, passing through a proposed Translator's Oath and converging in a common concern with cross-cultural alterity

Download or read book Futility Ending in Disaster written by Gaetano V. Cavallaro and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As noted in Volume I (The Beginning of Futility) after the Allies had induced Italy to join them against the Central Powers, the Italian Army used the lives of its illiterate peasant fanti as coin advancing to finally endanger Austro-Hungarian defenses. By August, 1917, Viennas generals were convinced that with German help they had to counterattack while Gen. Eric Ludendorff was wary of giving assistance. Finally he was won over after hearing a bold and daring plan later known as blitzkrieg. Italian Intelligence warnings of an enemy offensive were discarded as it was too late in the year. On October 24,1917, Austro-German forces unleashed the first blitzkrieg battle of the century which the Italian Army as the Anglo-French in France in May 1940 could not handle. Using the four commandments of blitzkrieg (deception, infiltration, isolation , annihilation), they quickly advanced 100 miles through the confused Italian defenses halting at the Piave River and adjacent mountains. Unable to handle the assault, many disheartened troops had fled, but later, with heroic deeds, halted the enemy advance. Notwithstanding the great victory, Vienna was negotiating a separate peace with Lloyd George and President Woodrow Wilson both of whom who did not believe the Allies could win.

Book The divisions of the army of the R S I 1934 1945

Download or read book The divisions of the army of the R S I 1934 1945 written by Paolo Crippa and published by Soldiershop Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal we have set ourselves with this series of four volumes, written in four hands, is to give an overall picture of the Divisions formed by the Army of the R.S.I. to the departments used in the fight against the partisans by the Republican National Army, starting from the last months of 1943, offering a purely military point of view, free from judgments of any kind. The purpose of "continuing the war" had always been present since the beginning of autumn 1943 in the military authorities of the Social Republic. During talks between three Mussolini and Hitler it was agreed to form a new fascist army, which, in the intentions of the Fuhrer, was to be made up of an army of 10/15 divisions. In reality, only 4 were planned and formed by the Republican National Army: 1st Bersaglieri Division "Italy", 2nd Grenadiers Division "Littorio", 3rd Marine Division "San Marco", 4th Alpine Division "Monterosa". This first volume is dedicated to the Division “Italy”, which operated on the southern front in Garfagnana, against the Allies, until the end of the conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In commencing an account of my life, it would be unpardonable in me to omit speaking of my kind parents. My father, a sailor, and the son of a sailor, educated me in the best manner he could in Nice, my native city, and afterwards trained me to the life of a seaman in a vessel with himself. He had navigated vessels of his own in his youth; but a change of fortune had compelled him afterwards to serve in those belonging to his father. He used often to tell his children that he would gladly have left them richer; but I am fully convinced that the course which he adopted in our education was the best he possibly could have taken, and that he procured for us the best instructors he was able, perhaps sometimes at the expense of his own convenience. If, therefore, I was not trained in a gymnasium, it was by no means owing to his want of desire...

Book Albanian units in the Second World War

Download or read book Albanian units in the Second World War written by Luigi Manes and published by Soldiershop Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 16 April 1939 Victor Emmanuel III received the Crown of Albania at the Quirinal Palace. The “Land of the Eagles” and Fascist Italy would thus share a common destiny. Institutional changes were accompanied by the integration of the Albanian armed forces into the Italian ones. Albania managed to recreate an autonomous yet small army only after the Armistice of 8 September 1943. From that date the Germans, interested in controlling the territory and safeguarding the neutrality of the Balkan State, relied on the support of local anti-partisan militias and proceeded to recruit a few thousand Albanians, many of whom were Kosovars, into mountain units of the Waffen-SS. On the opposing side the Albanian Resistance, which also counted in its ranks various formations made up of Italian soldiers, strengthened gradually.
