Download or read book Bernard Shaw the Man and the Mask Classic Reprint written by Richard Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw the Man and the Mask The following pages attempt to give within limits somewhat sharply drawn a definite idea of the personality, the work, and the meaning of a dramatist of our day who has gained distinction, invited abuse, and secured in excess the dubious compliment of misrepresentation. SO far as the book can claim to be a contribution to the subject, it may base it on the succinctness of the presenta tion; the analyses of the plays in chronologic sequence, technic as well as teaching and literary quality in mind; and upon the chapters in which respectively Shaw's craft as an artist of the thea tre and his intellectual significance as publicist and philosopher are studied. No one can write a book on Bernard Shaw with out acknowledging the inevitable obligation to Dr. Archibald Henderson, the authoritative biographer Of the playwright, and the man best fitted to de cide any question pertaining to him. The present writer renders grateful thanks to Dr. Henderson for his quick and generous giving of information not otherwise to be secured: a debt as pleasant as it is imperative to pay in this preface. Book excerpt: Mr. Whitefield has recently died, and his will indicates that his daughter Ann should be left in the care of two men, Roebuck Ramsden and Jack Tanner. Ramsden, a venerable old man, distrusts John Tanner, an eloquent youth with revolutionary ideas, saying "He is prodigiously fluent of speech, restless, excitable (mark the snorting nostril and the restless blue eye, just the thirty-secondth of an inch too wide open), possibly a little mad". In spite of what Ramsden says, Ann accepts Tanner as her guardian, though Tanner doesn't want the position at all. She also challenges Tanner's revolutionary beliefs with her own ideas. Despite Tanner's professed dedication to anarchy, he is unable to disarm Ann's charm, and she ultimately persuades him to marry her, choosing him over her more persistent suitor, a young man named Octavius Robinson.

Book A Guide to the Plays of Bernard Shaw

Download or read book A Guide to the Plays of Bernard Shaw written by C. B. Purdom and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1963 A Guide to the Plays of Bernard Shaw is a descriptive and critical account of Bernard Shaw’s work as a playwright. The leading ideas contained in the plays are discussed because they are relevant to the work of the dramatist, and the author has also commented on their original production as they were mostly done under Shaw’s direction. Author argues that if Shaw were to be reincarnated as a dramatic critic he would only too often be as scathing of the treatment of his plays upon the stage today as was G.B.S. when writing of the Shakespeare productions in the London theatre. This book is a must read for students of English literature.
