It was difficult to conceive that we had carried a wild nor'easter out of New York to the southern edge of the Gulf Stream. So quickly and easily were we possessed by the charm and Splen dor of this transition into enchanted atmosphere; the glowing wonders of our luminous wake and the glimpse of land over our bows, that the groaning travail of the early night seemed but the figment of a hardly remembered dream. 'Larger constellations burning, mellow moons and happy skies, Breadth of tropic shade and palms to cluster, knots of Paradise. 'Droops the heavy blossomed bower, hangs the heavy fruited tree, Summer isles of Eden lying in dark purple spheres of sea.' Locksley Hall. It is with the utmost diffidence I venture to offer these very inadequate descriptions of some of the glorious scenes I visited in the West Indies to the public. My friends both there and here have continually urged that I should write an account of my travels and adventures in regions not yet generally known, and perhaps few strangers have visited quite so many 'out-of-the-way' places, or seen so much of the natives in their homes, as I have done. It is with awe I venture to record some of the countless impressions made by nature in these islands upon my memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer in Bermuda and Excerpts From Tom Moore's Bermudian Letters to His Mother Does it not savor of Fairyland to speak of coral houses built upon coral islands? Well, such is the case down in Old Bermuda. The Islands are of coral formation and each little bungalow is built from blocks of coral sawed out of the ledges with the common saw, and are left exposed to the air to harden.' After building, they are given a coat of whitewash to protect the coral from the weather. These little white houses shimmer in the sunlight in a setting of green and tropical bloom, contrasting with the gray of the ledges and rich coloring of their environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bermuda Past and Present: A Descriptive and Historical Account, of the Somers Islands North American continent. Few islands are more supremely isolated, but their remoteness from other land is counterbalanced by their proximity to important trade routes, and so they constitute in the scheme of geographical distribution a haven of refuge, a place for ships to refit and coal, and for men to rest, after a struggle in heavy weather. Bermuda, to use the shorter term, calls to the deep, and its call extends also to shores whence men sail for pleasure. It has much that is quaint and beautiful to offer them. An archipelago of a hundred odd islands and rocks - less than twenty square miles in all - standing amid clear water of exquisite hues; a place of fair skies and sunshine arid flowers, blessed with an equable and salubrious climate, untouched by fog or frost, and wholly free from tropical fevers - such in brief is Bermuda. On shore fairy-like scenery, caves of crystal, limestone roads white as bleached linen, curious trees and shrubs; in the water, gardens as luxuriant as those which take their life from the soil, and a host of fishes, all coloured to correspond with the submarine growth which gives them food and a home. Book excerpt: Zack Chasteen's old friend Mickey Ryser pays a surprise visit to deliver some bad news: doctors tell him he has only a few weeks to live and he plans to spend it on his private-island hideaway in the Bahamas. But Ryser has a favor to ask. He needs Zack to find his estranged daughter, Jen, whom Ryser hasn't seen in more than twenty years. He wants to make amends and spend what little time he has left with her. When last heard from, Jen had bought a big sailboat and was bound for the Bahamas with some college friends. A private detective hired by Ryser to track her down has gone MIA. One of Jen's friends has jumped ship, under curious conditions. And there's the specter of an international piracy ring, known to hijack and plunder private yachts passing through island waters. With little to go on, Zack embarks on a mission that will take him from one end of the Bahamas to the other. It's home to all sorts of rogues and rascals, with plenty of places to hide---a wonderment of islands that Zack calls Baja Florida.
