Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Villages of the White Horse is an account of the area known as the 'Vale of the White Horse' during the early years of the twentieth century. Close to the where the counties of Berkshire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire meet, it is named after the vast, ancient picture of a horse which was hacked out of a chalk hill near to the village of Uffington. Alfred Williams describes the villages in this area through the people who lived in them, ubiquitous rural characters such as the carter, the woodman, the cowman and the innkeeper. He recounts the stories that they told him, preserving the authentic dialect of the area, and the local traditions and customs which the villagers had carried on for generations. As well as this, Williams describes the landscape and architecture of the Vale, the chalk downs, the remains of ancient British and Roman settlements, and the churches and inns, with knowledge and affection.

Book The Ballad of the White Horse

Download or read book The Ballad of the White Horse written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. Aeterna Press

Book The Ballad of the White Horse

Download or read book The Ballad of the White Horse written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of the White Horse is one of the last great epic poems in the English language. On the one hand it describes King Alfredಙs battle against the Danes in 878. On the other hand it is a timeless allegory about the ongoing battle between Christianity and the forces of nihilistic heathenism. Filled with colorful characters, thrilling battles and mystical visions, it is as lively as it is profound. Chesterton incorporates brilliant imagination, atmosphere, moral concern, chronological continuity, wisdom and fancy. He makes his stanzas reverberate with sound, and hurries his readers into the heart of the battle. This deluxe volume is the definitive edition of the poem. It exactly reproduces the 1928 edition with Robert Austinಙs beautiful woodcuts, and includes a thorough introduction and wonderful endnotes by Sister Bernadette Sheridan, from her 60 years researching the poem.
