Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Bishop Berkeley In almost every age and country there have been found a few men eminently distinguished for the purity of their hearts and the benevolence and integrity of their conduct. They rose in virtue above their contemporaries like the oak of the forest above the saplings beneath it. They are the moral ornaments and glory of their race, and the record of their lives serves as a relief to the otherwise dark picture presented by the history of our species. To the end of time their example will con tinne to exert an influence, exciting mankind to constant pro gress in everything which is noble and good. Among this class of men few deserve a higher place than Bishop Berkeley. Church Review. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Berkeley's Philosophy Every student of Berkeley owes a debt of enduring gratitude to the careful and loving work of Campbell Fraser. In addition to his indispensable oommen taries and memoirs, I have sought help from every source that seemed likely to afford it. In general, however, I have found Berkeley to be his own best interpreter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Prophet of Berkeley Square Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Prophet of Berkeley Square Classic Reprint written by Robert Smythe Hichens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet of Berkeley Square The great telescope of the Prophet was carefully adjusted upon its lofty, brass-bound stand in the bow window of Number One Thousand Berkeley Square. It pointed towards the remarkably bright stars which twinkled in the December sky over frosty London, those guardian stars which always seemed to the Prophet to watch with peculiar solicitude over the most respectable neighbourhood in which he resided. The polestar had its eye even now upon the mansion of an adjacent ex-premier, the belt of Orion was not oblivious of a belted earls cosy red-brick home just opposite, and the house of a certain famous actor and actress close by had been taken by the Great Bear under its special protection. The Prophet's butler, Mr. Ferdinand - that bulky and veracious gentleman threw open the latticed windows of the drawing-room and let the cold air rush blithely in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 68-70 Berkeley Place: A Comedy in One Act Time and place A summer morning breakfast in most any suburb. The curtain rises disclosing adjacent dining-rooms of twin houses. Each has a dining-room table set for three. The sideboards are back to back with a thick partition wall separating them. The wall extends only part way to the front of the stage so that each room may be seen from both sides of the house. There are dishes of fruit and vases of flowers on the sideboards. At the back of each room is a window near the partition. The shades are still drawn. At the back, just beyond the window, is a door to the street. At the extreme left and right is a door leading into the rest of the house. These dining-rooms are alike to the smallest detail. The two inside doors open at the same time and through each appears a maid. They are dressed in caps and aprons. They are just alike. They must be twin maids. They walk about the dining - rooms doing the same things at the same time. They walk-to 'the table and arrange the silver. A touch of color is needed, so the vase of flowers they thoughtfully place will not hide the seated breakfasters. A plate of appetizing apples is brought from the sideboard to the table. Then to the window pulling up the shade. Three chairs are brought from different sides of the room. Back to the door. The maids survey the rooms. Breakfast is served. The maids leave. The dining-rooms are again empty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It of course affords us the very greatest pleasure to behold so large a congregation, and to realize by your appearance, to say nothing of the thoughts and spirits that surround you and the spirit-influence that emanates from you, that you are glad to be in your accustomed places again, and to mingle one with another in the pursuit of truth. We desire to emphasize at the outset of this, our opening discourse today, the practical good which any public service can accomplish.
