Book Bering s Voyages Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book Bering s Voyages Vol 2 of 2 written by Frank Alfred Golder and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bering's Voyages, Vol. 2 of 2: An Account of the Efforts of the Russians to Determine the Relation of Asia and America; Steller's Journal of the Sea Voyage From Kamchatka to America and Return on the Second Expedition, 1741-1742Scholars will be ever grateful to Bering for persuading Steller to go with him on the St. Peter. Steller's account of his experiences is the most interesting of all the papers that have come down to us. The naval officers' log books contain the dry facts of the voyage, but Steller's journal gives the spirit of it, the inside story, the moral forces at work. The two records supplement each other, sometimes even in matters of navigation, and that is one reason why they are published together.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book To the Pacific and Arctic with Beechey

Download or read book To the Pacific and Arctic with Beechey written by Barry M. Gough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the Northwest Passage in the history of European and especially British expansion is well known. In the 40-year interlude of peace between Waterloo and the Crimean War, Britain could direct, with ease, a small portion of her fleet to polar discovery, and, by doing so, keep her Russian rival at bay, provide some employment and training for her officers, and contribute to the ends of science. Peard's journal of the voyage of Captain William Beechey , RN, and HMS Blossom to the Pacific and Arctic in 1825-8 is a lucid account of one of the most comprehensive British naval voyages to the Pacific since the days of Cook, Vancouver and Broughton. The Blossom made her way via Cape Horn to the Pacific, called at various places within the Pacific rim, and searched in vain for the expeditions of Captain William Edward Parry and John Franklin expected at the Bering Strait. George Peard, the first lieutenant of the Blossom, gives detailed descriptions of the places visited and the inhabitants, among them Pitcairn Island and the Gambier, Tahitian and Hawaiian groups. No less valuable are his accounts of Kamchatka, California, the Northwestern extremity of North America, and various parts of South America. Peard had an inquisitive, scientific mind, and he wrote a clear discursive narrative which shows that British exploration in the early Pax Britannica bore many fruits - scientific, commercial and strategic. It also showed that the Northwest passage had again eluded the British, in spite of the careful planning of the Admiralty, the Colonial office and the Hudson's Bay Company and the painstaking execution of orders by such naval officers as Parry, Franklin, Beechey and Peard himself Two of the plates are now printed at the end of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like nearly every area of scholarly inquiry today, the biological sciences are broken into increasingly narrow fields and subfields, its practitioners divided into ecologists, evolutionary biologists, taxonomists, paleontologists, and much more. But all these splintered pieces have their origins in the larger field of natural history—and in this era where climate change and relentless population growth are irrevocably altering the world around us, perhaps it’s time to step back and take a new, fresh look at the larger picture. The Essential Naturalist offers exactly that: a wide-ranging, eclectic collection of writings from more than eight centuries of observations of the natural world, from Leeuwenhoek to E. O. Wilson, from von Humboldt to Rachel Carson. Featuring commentaries by practicing scientists that offer personal accounts of the importance of the long tradition of natural history writing to their current research, the volume serves simultaneously as an overview of the field’s long history and as an inspirational starting point for new explorations, for trained scientists and amateur enthusiasts alike.

Book The Journals of Captain James Cook on his Voyages of Discovery

Download or read book The Journals of Captain James Cook on his Voyages of Discovery written by J.C. Beaglehole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain James Cook’s first two voyages of exploration, in 1768-71 and 1772-75, had drawn the modern map of the South Pacific Ocean and had opened the door on the discovery of Antarctica. These expeditions were the subject of Volumes I and II of this edition of Cook’s Journals. The third voyage, on which Cook sailed in 1776, was directed to the Northern Hemisphere. Sailing north from Tahiti in 1778, Cook made the first recorded discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. On March 7 he sighted the Oregon coast in 44° N. The remarkable voyage which he made northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coasts and through Bering Strait to his farthest north in 70° nearly disproved the existence of a navigable passage towards the Atlantic and produced charts of impressive accuracy. Returning to Hawaii to refit, Cook met his death in a clash with the natives as tragic as it seems unnecessary. The volume and vitality of the records, both textual and graphic, for this voyage surpass those even for Cook’s second voyage. Dr Beaglehole prints the full text of Cook’s own holograph journals, followed by those of Captains Clerke and King for the course of the voyage after Cook’s death. This is a facsimile reprint of the edition published in 1967. For the print-on-demand edition, the illustrations originally in colour are reproduced in black-and-white, the fold-outs divided to fit on separate pages, and the volume itself split into two parts.
