Book excerpt: A handbook to enable ministry leaders to help others through bereavement Grief is a difficult topic that ministry leaders deal with on a regular basis. Do they have confidence in helping those who are suffering the loss of a loved one? Do they feel equipped to meet the differing needs that occur in the life of a survivor? Can they lead someone through a process of grief reconciliation? Are they able to plan and implement a bereavement ministry in their church or parish? Here is a book that can help leaders in a practical way to minister to those who are grieving. In addition, they will discover essential tools to deal with grief’s difficult questions. Drawing upon his thirty years of experience as a pastor and as a professional grief counselor, Dr. Michael provides a valuable resource for pastors and other grief leaders to use within their churches and organizations, and their surrounding communities. This work is a practical guide that will bring a greater understanding of the impact that loss has upon individuals and will provide competent counsel for ministering to them. In addition, it will equip the leader to implement a ministry of grief education and bereavement within a church or organization.

This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countless generous-hearted people feel called to bereavement ministry and accompany the bereaved both liturgically and pastorally. In An Introduction to Bereavement Ministry: Caring for Those Who Mourn, all those called to bereavement ministry will receive the theological and spiritual formation to minister to the dying and those who grieve. This resource presents a bereavement ministry that flows from the liturgical and pastoral vision of the Church’s official funeral rites and ensures that all ministers—ordained, lay professional staff, and volunteer ministers—are working out of a shared understanding of that vision. In pastoral and engaging prose, author Corinna Laughlin unfolds the Church’s theology of Christian death, the paschal mystery, the communion of saints, and the healing power of the rites. This book addresses ministry with the dying and with the bereaved at the time of death and presents the range of pastoral services the parish and its bereavement team can offer, both in the early days and throughout the year following a death. This foundational and readable resource provides compelling and enriching formation in bereavement ministry. An Introduction to Bereavement Ministry: Caring for Those Who Mourn may be used by any person seeking formation in bereavement ministry. It may also be used in tandem with Guide for Forming a Parish Bereavement Ministry, by Robert Valle, a resource for parishes that are developing or refreshing a parish bereavement ministry. (setting elements of section 1 within a scriptural context) • A selection of suggested Scripture readings with reflections and some sample prayers of intercession. Book Equipping the Church with Grief Ministry Skills

Download or read book Equipping the Church with Grief Ministry Skills written by Dr. Michael D. Baker and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is a training tool for Christian leaders to educate and equip leader and laity alike with the knowledge of the field of grief, and to equip them to improve their ministry to the bereaved. This book can be used by denominational leaders, conventions, and church leaders to train pastors, deacons, and lay leaders in grief ministry skills. The book examines the theological dimensions of death and grief, as well as the theoretical foundations of grief, both normal grief and complicated. Also, the book identifies essential grief ministry skills and the practical application of those skills. The book is both educational and practical. This book can be used in a seminary class room, or can be used by associations to develop the grief ministry skills of its local pastors. This book can also be used in the local church to equip deacons and lay leaders to better minister to its congregants. This book holds value for its commitment to examining the field of grief, while holding to Christian principles. Most literature that combines the knowledge of grief and Christian principles either prepares a person for counseling or ministers to the person that has experienced loss. This book can in fact assist those studying for a career in grief counseling, and at the same time help those experiencing loss. The intention of the author is help the professional as well as the layman prepare for grief ministry and develop specific skills to assist them in their ability to minister to the bereaved.

Book Grief Loss and Death

Download or read book Grief Loss and Death written by Andrew J Weaver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to balance the professional demands of your ministry with your personal needs No amount of research, study, or planning can prepare pastoral care givers for the stress placed on their personal lives by the demands of their ministries. But Grief, Loss, and Death: The Shadow Side of Ministry can help anyone involved in pastoral counseling close the gap between their professional and personal needs, encouraging them to use the stress, loss, and grief that accompanies pastoral care giving as opportunities to humanize their ministries and reaffirm their faith. This unique book offers comfort and solace to those in the chaplaincy who are torn between professional obligations and the limits and boundaries of the shadow side of their ministry—the human side. The shadow side of ministry shoots a bullet through the brain that does not kill or prevent thinking or feeling. But the bullet creates a hole, a long, hollow, empty wound that thinking and feeling must somehow bypass. The wounded minister does not recover the previous self, cannot remember what the old self thought or felt. Like a veteran of a secret war, there may be a new life after the shameful wound, but no public way to heal. But there is a public way of speaking about it and this may help relieve some of the shame and some of the self-blaming. —Author Halbert Weidner Grief, Loss, and Death: The Shadow Side of Ministry can help in your search for the answers to questions you may have already found yourself asking, including: Do I prefer co-workers or friends? How did I lose focus of my original goals? How did I become isolated? How can I share authority without giving up responsibility? How do I cope when family issues arise? The book also addresses issues of illness, death and suicide, funerals, the confrontation between joy and sorrow, and how life’s stages are often like the Stations of the Cross. Grief, Loss, and Death: The Shadow Side of Ministry is help against despair. Newcomers to the profession can use the book as a guide to the difficulties that lie ahead, and experienced pastoral care givers can employ it as a catalogue to be consulted when all hope seems lost.

Book Developing a Community of Care Bereavement Ministry at New York Worship Center Church in Jamaica New York

Download or read book Developing a Community of Care Bereavement Ministry at New York Worship Center Church in Jamaica New York written by Craig Pender and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this rigorous academic and practical project was three fold. Our first intent was to provide a bible based grief support group for church and unchurched adults grieving the loss of loved ones. It was also our intent that our learning and experience would develop into a viable grief support ministry at New York Worship Church, a ministry that is scarcely available to non-existent in most churches. Thirdly, it is our intent that this project would serve as a model helping other churches and funeral service providers to see the mutual benefits of working collaboratively to provide a similar ministry to the constituents of their communities. The project was carried out over a six-week period, which included a weekly video seminar on a grief-related topic. The videos featured respected counselors and teachers who have faced their own grief and who share insights on how to walk through grief in a healthy way. There were also personal testimonies of people who shared their struggles and what helped them. After, each video, time was spent in small group discussion of the concepts from the video and how they apply to participant's day-to-day struggles and life. I and other leaders from New York Worship Center Church facilitated these discussions. The Lay Advisory Committee was carefully recruited and included among others a Licensed Funeral Director; a Licensed Social Worker, and a Practicing Attorney. These professionals not only served extremely well as co-facilitators, but their expertise and knowledge proved to enhance each session. I would be remiss not to mention that Ms. Jameison, our attorney was so committed to the integrity of the project and to those who would benefit from it, offered pro-bono legal assistance to each of the participants as they had need concerning the estates of those who had recently passed away. By the end of the first session all involved could tell that this project was going to be a tremendous success. It was also confirmed through comments made by the participants, that the idea to bring this opportunity to the community as a collaboration between New York Worship Church and J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home was not only a very smart idea, but a very considerate way to give back to the community. This project demonstrated the effectiveness and projected outcomes of the Congregational Growth and Community Development area of study. By identifying a need within our local community and by finding a way to meet that need with a community partner helped to demonstrate what it means to live out the gospel and share the love of Jesus Christ. I and the Lay Advisory Committee members were all transformed by this experience, but more importantly the participants received the necessary tools, and ministry that was needed to help them move from mourning to joy.

This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Resource of the Year award and a first-place award in resources for ministry from the Association of Catholic Publishers and a third-place award in pastoral ministry books from the Catholic Media Association. Many pastoral leaders feel ill-equipped to respond to the turmoil of those who face the death by suicide of a loved one. Responding to Suicide is the first book written for Catholic leaders that takes a holistic approach to understanding suicide and ministering effectively in its aftermath. More than a dozen leading mental health practitioners, Catholic theologians, and pastoral care experts share how best to respond to suicide as leaders in parishes, schools, healthcare systems, and other Church settings. The book offers a cross-disciplinary approach that provides basic information about the central role of mental health in suicide and clarifies Church teaching about suicide, funerals and burials for those who have died by suicide, and their afterlife. The National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that suicide was the tenth most common cause of death among Americans of all ages in 2017 and the second leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty-four year-olds. Death by suicide is usually sudden, often violent, and frequently comes at the end of a long and difficult struggle with a mental illness. Heaped on top of that is a social stigma that leaves loved ones in shock and often burdened with shame. Responding to Suicide addresses common concerns of the bereaved following a suicide: skepticism that Catholic leaders will understand; fear that the Church teaches that their loved one is in hell; and belief that they will find little if any support in the Church. More than a dozen contributors from across the spectrum of Catholic life provide rich guidance rooted in firsthand experience of suicide loss. Contributors include Deacon Ed Shoener, Bishop John P. Dolan, Msgr. Charles Pope, Leticia Adams, Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Msgr. Stephen Rossetti, and clinical experts in the field of mental health and suicide. They share personal stories of loss, grief, hope, and healing, and clear up misconceptions about Church teaching. They offer practical takeaways for pastoral leaders: dos and don’ts when talking about suicide guidance for preaching and planning funerals information on the role of mental illnesses in suicide resource lists for those who grieve as well as for your own professional development suggested protocols for ministering to a school or parish community following a suicide ideas about forming parish outreach ministries to the bereaved that address the needs of suicide loss
