Book The Shape of Sola Scriptura

Download or read book The Shape of Sola Scriptura written by Keith A. Mathison and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2001 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what shape do we find the doctrine of sola Scriptura today? Many modern Evangelicals see it as a license to ignore history and the creeds in favor of a more splintered approach to the Christian living. In the past two decades, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox apologists have strongly tried to undermine sola Scriptura as unbiblical, unhistorical, and impractical. But these groups rest their cases on a recent, false take on sola Scriptura. The ancient, medieval, and classical Protestant view of sola Scriptura actually has a quite different shape than most opponents and defenders maintain. Therein lies the goal of this book-an intriguing defense of the ancient (and classical Protestant) doctrine of sola Scriptura against the claims of Rome, the East, and modern Evangelicalism. "The issue of sola Scriptura is not an abstract problem relevant only to the sixteenth-century Reformation, but one that poses increasingly more serious consequences for contemporary Christianity. This work by Keith Mathison is the finest and most comprehensive treatment of the matter I've seen. I highly recommend it to all who embrace the authority of sacred Scripture." -R.C. Sproul, Ligonier Ministries

The need of the Papal Primacy to ensure Christian unity; the true meaning of the Priesthood as a sacrament and not a mere ministry; the necessity of the Eucharist as the Sacrifice of the Savior now offering Himself on our altars; the role of the Bishops as successors of the Apostles, united with the successor of St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome; the value of suffering in union with Christ crucified; the indispensable service of the laity in the apostolate - all these themes receive from Cardinal Ratzinger new clarity and depth. Book excerpt: Many Christians live as though they are effectively alone in the world. However, there is another realm of intelligent life that plays a role in the world—angelic beings. This book explores the doctrine of angels and demons, answering key questions about their nature and the implications for Christians' beliefs and behavior, helping readers see their place in the larger biblical plotline that includes supernatural beings. An understanding of the reality of angels and demons encourages believers to be vigilant in the light of spiritual warfare and to be confident in Christ's victory on the cross.

Book excerpt: "Men were made to rule. They always have and always will. Nothing can change that. Nothing will. It is not a question of whether men will be ruling, but which ones and how." From It's Good to Be a Man Our modern society has called for us to "smash the patriarchy," and the church has not done much better. Instead of telling men how they can hone and refine their aggressive traits, the church has told men that they should aspire to be meek servant-leaders, and when a man shows any signs of independence, he is shown the door. This leaves most young men lost. They don't know what to do or how to improve, so they watch Jordan Peterson videos on YouTube to learn how to grow in their masculinity and sense of mission. In this book, Michael Foster and Bnonn Tennant remind men that their natural aggressive instincts are gifts from God that are meant to be used for the kingdom. Men are supposed to found households, join brotherhoods, and work towards a mission. It's Good to Be A Man offers men a quick guide to where they are and how they can improve. God made men to be strong and aggressive risk-takers. This is a feature, not a bug. Foster and Tennant remind us that it's good to be a man.

Book excerpt: Why do the gospels represent the good news as being about the "kingdom of God"? What is this kingdom, and how does it relate to us today? This book traces the surprising biblical narrative of kingdom, from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. It starts by showing that John 3:16 is actually about God transforming Adam's ruined kingdom into his own eternal one. It then goes back to Genesis to explain the origin of this kingdom, demonstrating that the image of God in Adam is actually representative rulership and sonship. From there, it traces the history of this kingdom through the Fall in Eden to the disinheritance at Babel-all the way to the occupation by Satan's forces by the time of Jesus. This then sets up a comparison between the way that the New Testament preaches the gospel, and the way modern evangelicals do. The conclusion is that the gospel of the New Testament is fundamentally the message of the triumph of Jesus as king of the cosmos-and the call to submit to, and receive the benefits of, his rulership. The final part of the book unpacks some critical implications of this. It argues that the Great Commission is a directive to conquer the lands ruled by Satan, in the name of the now-reigning King, Jesus. This directive consciously mimics the dominion mandate given to Adam, and should be seen as God's end-game in retaking the whole earth as his kingdom-a plan that will succeed through "the power of God for salvation" by the time Jesus returns.
