Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolkien's famous translations and lectures on the story of two fifth-century heroes in northern Europe. Professor J.R.R.Tolkien is most widely known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but he was also a distinguished scholar in the field of Mediaeval English language and literature. His most significant contribution to Anglo-Saxon studies is to be found in his lectures on Finn and Hengest (pronounced Hen-jist), two fifth-century heroes in northern Europe. The story is told in two Old English poems, Beowulf and The Fights at Finnesburg, but told so obscurely and allusively that its interpretation had been a matter of controversy for over 100 years. Bringing his unique combination of philological erudition and poetic imagination to the task, however, Tolkien revealed a classic tragedy of divided loyalties, of vengeance, blood and death. Tolkien's original and persuasive solution of the many problems raised by the story ranged widely through the early history and legend of the Germanic peoples. The story has the added attraction that it describes the events immediately preceding the first Germanic invasion of Britain which was led by Hengest himself. This book will be of interest not only to students of Old English and all those interested in the history of northern Europe and Anglo-Saxon England, but also admirers of The Lord of the Rings who will be fascinated to see how Tolkien handled a story which he did not invent.

Book The Indeterminacy of Beowulf

Download or read book The Indeterminacy of Beowulf written by Johann Köberl and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frustrated that after 200 years, scholars still disagreed over several crucial aspects of the Anglo-Saxon poem, Koberl undertook his own translation into plain English. It was then that he understood the full scale of ambiguity that riddles the text, and the impossibility of translating without interpreting. Many of the ambiguities he discusses have been examined by others, but he puts them into the context of the overall ambivalence of the poem as a whole. Quotations are in both the original and modern English. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book Beowulf and Christianity

Download or read book Beowulf and Christianity written by Mary A. Parker and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the reasons for Christian stories and ideas in Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon epic poem that also describes pagan religious and burial practices. By examining historical, archaeological, and linguistic sources, Mary Parker evaluates the possibilities for Christian understanding on the part of the audience and Christian teaching on the part of the poet. These inquiries lead to an informed review of the critical literature on the Christianity in Beowulf. Finally the author looks at individual speakers in the poem and words they use that reveal Christian meaning. This multi-disciplinary summary and review concludes that the Christianity in Beowulf is a reflection of the society that produced it, a heroic society in transition toward the new Christian value system.

Download or read book Beowulf and the Critics written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and published by Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS). This book was released on 2002 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important essay in the history of Beowulf scholarship, J.R.R. Tolkien's "Beowulf: the monsters and the critics" has been much studied and discussed. But scholars of both Beowulf and Tolkien have to this point been unaware that Tolkien's essay was a redaction of a much longer and more substantial work, Beowulf and the critics, which Tolkien wrote in the 1930s and probably delivered as a series of Oxford lectures. This critical edition of Beowulf and the critics presents both unpublished versions of Tolkien's lecture, each substantially different from the other and from the final, published essay. The edition included a description of the manuscript, complete textual and explanatory notes, and a detailed critical introduction that explains the place of Tolkien's Anglo-Saxon scholarship both in the history of Beowulf scholarship and in literary history.

The Nero Ms is the more elaborate of the two, and is adorned with very fine drawings. Claudius, however, offers occasionally a better text; it has been read by a corrector whose alterations--contrary to what is so often the case in mediaeval MSS--seem to be authoritative.
