Book Benthic and Sedimentological Studies of the Georgetown Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site

Download or read book Benthic and Sedimentological Studies of the Georgetown Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site written by Robert F. Van Dolah and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specific objectives of this study were to: (1) Provide a review of existing information on the physical, chemical and biological conditions in the vicinity of the Georgetown DMDS and provide a succinct description of biological, recreational, or other resources that might be affected by ocean disposal; (2) Describe the mineralogical, textural, and chemical characteristics of the bottom sediments in the Georgetown DMDS, in a control site, in three stations 'down current' of the DMDS, and in the navigation channel; (3) Describe the sediment bedforms present in the Georgetown DMDS, in the control area and in the three 'down current' stations with regard to their size, orientation, and composition; (4) Ascertain whether the sediment characteristics of the DMDS and the stations 'down current' have been altered by current disposal practices; (5) Describe temperature-depth, salinity-depth, and dissolved oxygen-depth profiles in the water column at all stations, and determine concentrations of metals, pesticides, PCB's, high molecular weight hydrocarbons, and the turbidities at four stations (one DMDS station, one control station, one 'down current' station, and one entrance channel station); (6) Characterize the species composition and density of benthic communities in the DMDS, in the control site, and in the 'down current' stations; (7) Determine the degree of bioaccumulation of pollutants in selected sedentary benthic organisms collected from the DMDS, control site, and 'down current' stations; and (8) Assess the effects of the present dredged material disposal practices on bottom communities in the DMDS and the three 'down current stations.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations were conducted in and adjacent to the Ocean Disposal Area during the summer and autumn of 1978 to assess the benthic communities and sediment characteristics of the area in relation to disposal of dredged materials over the site. Waters of high salinity and moderate dissolved oxygen content cover the study area. During August field sampling, salinities varied from 31.32-35.88 ppt, while oxygen concentrations ranged from 4.0-6.9 mg/1. Turbidities decreased progressively with increasing distance from shore, so that water clarity was markedly greater offshore. Shifting sands provide an unsuitable substrate for most sessile species, and the study area was sparsely populated with epifaunal invertebrates except in areas where accumulations of large shells were present. The number of species in dredge collections varied widely from one station to another. These differences were related to the presence of absence of suitable substrate rather than any effects from disposal of dredged materials in the area. The amount of material collected by the dredge was small at each of the 40 stations sampled. Although sponges, octocorals, hydroids, bryozoans, and ascidians were occasionally taken in the dredge, no live bottom area were found anywhere in the study area. No noteworthy difference in epifaunal composition were detected between the Ocean Disposal Area and adjacent sites outside that could be directly attributed to disposal practices.

Book Field Study of the Effects of Storms on the Stability and Fate of Dredged Material in Subaqueous Disposal Areas

Download or read book Field Study of the Effects of Storms on the Stability and Fate of Dredged Material in Subaqueous Disposal Areas written by Henry Joseph Bokuniewicz and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Island Sound is a large estuary. Dredged sediment placed on the bottom of the Sound is subject to dispersion by the tidal stream, estuarine circulation, waves, and disturbances of the hydraulic flow field by storms. The tidal stream is the dominant source of energy for the resuspension and transport of sediments; waves do not contribute significantly to dispersion in water depths greater than 60 ft. Random fluctuations in the water velocity are detected at all depths. The data obtained show that to best contain silt-clay dredged material, the disposal site should be on a naturally accreting mud bottom, the disposal operation should emplace a large volume of material on the site expeditiously, and the deposit should be built to an optimum configuration. The capacity of the disposal site is limited by the maximum height of the disposal mound and the maximum slope of the pile sides which present a minimum disturbance of the natural hydraulic regime. The capacity of the New Haven site is estimated to be up to 1.7 x 106 yd3 of unarmored, silty, dredged material. Larger volumes may be contained if the surface of the deposit is armored with coarser material.
