Excerpt: ...of Vol. 41 of the Rush Manuscripts. In the fall, Dr. Nisbet resigned. The formal resignation is dated October 18, 1785, but the arrangements for his leaving had been begun about a month before.84 As early as September 4th, he wrote to Rush, that he is determined to return to Scotland because his health is wrecked and he will not "be able to be of any service or even to exist in America." About this time he tried to get back his former situation as pastor at Montrose. He indignantly declares that he had not expected to be insulted by the Trustees by being told that they would not pay his passage home. "Sir," he wrote, "I have the magnanimity, weak as I am, not to ask it if I could do without it. But Necessity obliges me and you owe it to your own character and to the character of America, even not to harry us away as felons, or even as unserviceable dogs, when we have lost all our means of subsistence in your service." And he declares that it is highly improper for the "most learn ed man in America to display his learning to the affront of a poor old clergyman.85 '3 Rush MSS., V0l. 42, p. 9. " Rush MSS., Vol. 41, p. 157 and preceding pages. '5 Rush MSS., Vol. 41, p. 145. Nisbet to Rush, Sept. 4, The Board accepted Dr. Nisbet's resignation, and agreed to pay his traveling expenses to Scotland. A committee was appointed to pay his way to Philadelphia, and another, composed of Trustees living in Philadelphia, to pay his passage across the Atlantic. From the same letter we learn that Dr. Davidson was appointed Principal pro tempore.88 For some unexplained reason the ship on which Dr. Nisbet had intended to sail did not arrive when due, and, with the advent of cooler weather, his health...

Book Benjamin Rush

Download or read book Benjamin Rush written by Alyn Brodsky and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only full biography of Benjamin Rush, an extraordinary Founding Father and America's leading physician of the Colonial era While Benjamin Rush appears often and meaningfully in biographies about John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, this legendary man is presented as little more than a historical footnote. Yet, he was a propelling force in what culminated in the Declaration of Independence, of which he was a signer. Rush was an early agitator for independence, a member of the First Continental Congress, and one of the leading surgeons of the Continental Army during the early phase of the Revolutionary War. He was a constant and indefatigable adviser to the foremost figures of the American Revolution, notably George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. Even if he had not played a major role in our country's creation, Rush would have left his mark in history as an eminent physician and a foremost social reformer in such areas as medical teaching, treatment of the mentally ill (he is considered the Father of American Psychiatry), international prevention of yellow fever, establishment of public schools, implementation of improved education for women, and much more. For readers of well-written biographies, Brodsky has illuminated the life of one of America's great and overlooked revolutionaries.

Book The Selected Writings of Benjamin Rush

Download or read book The Selected Writings of Benjamin Rush written by Dagobert D. Runes and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of letters, articles, and speeches displays the deep wisdom and varied concerns of this influential yet little-known Founding Father. A physician and humanitarian from Pennsylvania, Benjamin Rush was both a learned intellectual and a radical revolutionary. He was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and a Continental Congress attendee. And unlike many of his more famous contemporaries, he was a early and vehement opponent of slavery and the death penalty. This collection of Rush’s writings shows a wide range of interest and knowledge embracing agriculture and the mechanical arts, chemistry and medicine, political science, and theology. Included are letters he wrote in an effort to dispel prejudice, to fight oppression, and to elevate the lot of the lowly.

Book Dr Benjamin Rush

Download or read book Dr Benjamin Rush written by Harlow Giles Unger and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing biography of Dr. Benjamin Rush--fiery signer of the Declaration of Independence, prominent physician, ardent politician, zealous social reformer, passionate humanitarian, and dedicated educator Dr. Benjamin Rush was the Founding Father of an America that other Founding Fathers forgot or ignored--an America of women, African-Americans, Jews, Quakers, Roman Catholics, indentured workers, and the poor. Ninety percent of the people lived in that other America, but none could vote and none had rights to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness, either before or after independence from Britain. Alone among the Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush heard their cries and stepped forth as the nation's first great humanitarian and social reformer. Known primarily as America's most influential and leading physician, Rush was also among the first to call for the abolition of slavery, equal rights for women, free education and health care for the poor, slum clearance, city-wide sanitation facilities, an end to child labor, universal public education, humane treatment and therapy for the insane, prison reform, an end to capital punishment, and improved medical care for injured troops. Using archival material found in Edinburgh, London, and Paris, as well as significant new materials from Rush's descendants recently made available, Harlow Giles Unger's startling biography of Benjamin Rush is an important biography of the Founding Father who never forgot America's forgotten people.

Book excerpt: Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) exerted a remarkably wide-ranging influence on the medical, political, and social life of the emerging American nation. He fulfilled the multiple roles of first American professor of chemistry, signer of the Declaration of Independence, foremost American physician, father of American psychiatry, pioneer abolitionist, educator, advocate of temperance, and proponent of prison reform. The success of these endeavors rested largely on the strength and size of his literary output, which was unparalleled by any of the other founding fathers. This bibliographic guide is the only work to identify all of Rush's published writings as well as hundreds of writings about him. The Introduction surveys Rush's published writings on a variety of topics and places them in their late 18th and early 19th century context. Part one provides a comprehensive chronological listing of Rush's published works, including articles, pamphlets, and books in all their editions. Part one also includes comments from Rush scholars on the nature and significance of many of the works, along with references to contemporary reviews. Extensive cross-references show the relationship between documents. Aids to locating the documents in their original, reprinted, and microtext forms are also provided. Part two lists over 500 publications about Rush and his role in American history. The work includes a title and general index to part one and an author and general index to part two.
